Knowing Your Enemy

Bed bugs are wingless insects that feed off warm blood not just from humans but other animals as well. Apart from beds, they prefer nesting on soft furniture. When disturbed, they seek shelter in deep dark cracks to protect themselves.

Most people believe that bed bugs spread disease and are harmful to humans but in reality, they’re not. You’re not likely to feel a bed bug while it feeds on you because of its saliva. The only things you need to worry about are developing an allergic reaction to this substance and infection.

But the million-dollar question is do bed bugs transmit disease? You can breathe easy knowing they can’t. Still, the itch can be very irritating and deprive you of much needed sleep.

The Hunt

While bites are a tell-tale sign of bed bugs, you’ll have to make sure you are indeed dealing with them. Check common hiding places such as the nightstand, lamps, framed pictures and especially drapes. Another thing you can do is to place double-sided tape on your mattress to trap them. Once a sighting is confirmed, it’s time to roll out and find out how to kill bed begs naturally at home.

Get Rid of Bed Bugs Naturally

Sure you can reach for a bottle of insecticide and start spraying like crazy but is this really the way to go? You should know that some bugs have developed some form of immunity to insecticides making them practically useless. The good news is that there are natural ways to get rid of your unwanted house guests.

Turn up the heat – Bed bugs don’t like heat and it’s best to take advantage of this fact. To prevent your bed from becoming their nest, be sure to clean your linens in really hot water. The trick is to reach at least 1200 F or about 490 C. Not only will this kill the insects but their eggs as well. After washing, make sure you put them in sealed bags.

Will washing ruin your beddings and linens? Try using a steamer to achieve the same effect. Use steam on carpets, curtains and walls as well. Those who live in cold places should know that bed bugs are vulnerable to extremely low temperatures as well.

Tea Tree Oil Spray – Tea tree oil can easily be found at your local grocery. Mix this with a little bit of water and use a spray bottle to spray it onto your mattress. This natural substance won’t do you any harm as long as it is used properly. Combine this after heating for the best results.

Clean up with a vacuum cleaner – Vacuuming will help remove bed bugs and their eggs from their hiding places. Suction isn’t enough though. The proper way to do it is to scrape along the surface to dislodge these critters. When you’re done, dispose the vacuum bag properly by using a sealed bag.

Encase your mattress – It is a good investment to purchase mattress casings from pest control companies. This is a more of a preventive measure on how to kill bed bugs naturally at home. It works by sealing in any bed bugs already living in your mattress which in theory will deprive them of their food source.
