Updated on May 12, 2011

Concrete Driveway Sealers

If you have a concrete driveway you are eventually going to have to resurface it. Concrete is a durable material, especially when you use a concrete driveway sealer, but it will eventually show signs of wear and tear. Most commonly this is in the form of cracks, once these start to appear you will need to resurface your driveway.

Concrete resurfacing is usually done as a way to repair the cracks and discoloration that appear on you r driveway over time. This will both make your driveway look better and prevent the damage from getting any worse. Some people will choose to resurface there concrete driveway strictly to improve the appearance. Decorative concrete resurfacing not only restores the look of the concrete it can also be used to add a decorative touch. You can change the color of the driveway and even add designs , some of them get quite elaborate. The price of resurfacing your driveway will vary, especially if you want to add an elaborate design but they usually range between three and seven dollars a square foot.

In order to resurface a concrete driveway you are going to need to clean it first. The best way to do this is with a pressure washer which will allow you to get most of the built up dirt off of your driveway. The next step is to repair the cracks in the concrete. You will want to prime the area and then fill it in with a crack repair material. Next you will need to reinforce the crack with fabric and paint a base coat over it. Then you will smooth a polymer concrete over the crack, after it has dried it will need to be ground down to the same level as the rest of driveway. The holes in the concrete will need to be filled in with an epoxy mortar.

Once the concrete is repaired you are ready to resurface the driveway. The first step is to apply a primer and a granule broadcast. Next you will want to add a texture coat, to do this you will need to follow the instructions on the package. Usually it will be applied with a spray gun. Once the texture coat is applied you will need to go over it with a trowel. If you want to add a color coat to your driveway now is the time to do it but this isn’t necessary if you are happy with a concrete colored driveway. Finally you will add a concrete sealer and you are done resurfacing your concrete driveway.
