Shed Doors

Storage Shed Door Types

The most common way of building a shed door is one of the three varieties of the battened door.

These are simple to construct but there are few key points to consider if the shed doors are to function well in the long term. The three varieties of battened door are:

• Ledged
• Ledged and braced
• Framed and ledged

Ledged Doors

The style consists of vertical boards and three or four horizontal ledges. The width of the boards selected depends on the size of the door needed. The vertical boards are tongue and grooved to stop draughts and the edges chamfered to relieve the plain appearance. The open joints due to timber shrinkage is hidden by this method of door construction.

Ledged door is suited for the place where there is no rough use of door. When ledged door is used externally, the door drops at the edges away from the hinges due to shrinkage and swelling of timber, banging of the door and 'give' in the nails.

In this design of shed door, the braces prevent the nose of the door from sagging and provide strength. It is made of the same timber as ledges and it slopes upwards to form gallows bracket. It is important for the braces to have the right slope to always stay in compression, because a wrong slope, will open up the joints with time. The best ledged and braced doors design is shown below picture. The brace is just nailed to the battens. This is an improvement on the plain ledged door but relies on the nails to do the bracing and not the end bearing of timber on timber.

Common Mistakes done with Ledged and braced doors

Braces sloping the wrong way. The brace on this gate is sloping down from the hinge, over time the joints will open up.

Ledged and braced doors with two-way sloping

When the braces are sloping both the ways, it is actually correct and gives more strength. These doors are mass-produced  and having braces slope both the ways, the door as a part of self-assembly kit can be hung upside-down.

Framed and ledged doors

This is the best shed door design of the three types. Stronger, Rigid and can withstand wind & weather better. The shed door can be secured into the surrounding frame at several points because of the full frame around the perimeter.
