Dorm rooms are traditionally small spaces. Finding a way to store everything in such a limited area can take a little work. Fortunately, there are a number of solutions available to make the most out of the square footage provided. A little bit of creative thinking is all it takes to turn a small dorm into a cozy living space, capable of holding all the comforts of home.

The main goal is to avoid clutter. Clutter not only makes a confined area appear even smaller, it takes up valuable space that could be put to better use. There are several ways to keep clutter under control. Office supplies can be corralled into wall-hanging organizers, for instance. Shoes can be organized in convenient holders that hang on a door or inside the closet. Toiletries can be kept together in a carry-all or tote that hangs on a doorknob. The idea is to minimize clutter in order to maximize space.

Making the most of what’s already available is another good way to increase the storage capabilities of a dorm room. Underbed boxes are a great way to take advantage of what would otherwise be wasted space. Lifting the bed with risers will make this space even larger. Closets can be maximized by using vertical or tiered hangers, making more room available for shoes or other items. Stored duffel bags and luggage can hold out-of-season clothing.

When working with limited space, it’s often necessary to get creative. Unlikely places are often prime real estate for clever budget self storage tricks. Closet doors, for instance, can hold an over-the-door hamper, freeing up floor space for a bookshelf or a nightstand. A well-placed tension rod or two can provide storage for shoes or for hanging items such as scarves. Though many colleges prohibit the use of nails, walls should not be discounted. CommandTM hooks come in a wide range of sizes and are removable, allowing walls to serve as space for hanging storage, without being damaged in the process.

Finally, investing in items that serve more than one purpose will keep the existing space from being taken up by everyday essentials. A number of options exist to make dorm life easier by combining multiple functionalities in one handy device. An alarm clock that doubles as a radio, speaker system, and phone charger is one example of such a gadget. An over the door hanging mirror that doubles as a storage cabinet is another example. In a similar vein, avoiding multiples of any item can free up a significant amount of room. Working with a roommate is essential to avoiding the unnecessary clutter of duplicate items that could otherwise be shared. Examples include printers, ironing boards, and in-room refrigerators.

A little effort and creative thinking go a long way toward maximizing storage space in a limited area. Although a college dorm room can be small, it’s entirely possible to make room for all the essentials and comforts needed to make it feel like a home.

Command hooks are one of the best inventions ever for college dorm rooms! They are so easy to hang, save lots of space and look attractive. Clutter is the main issue in so many rooms - even at home. Good thoughts on this article and well done.
