The Beautiful Begonia - A Summer Garden Treasure
As brightly as the sun above
You greet me every day
Your colours warm my very soul
In your caring gentle way
Begonias have a lot going for them; they are a great way to brighten up your garden in a pot or hanging baskets.
Begonias come in an array of beautiful colours. My favourites are vivid sun orange, dark rich red, or beautiful bright yellow.
You can buy your begonias as annual plants from your garden centre to plant out at the beginning of summer when the risk of frost is over.
Alternatively, if you have a greenhouse then you can grow your begonia from the ‘corm’.
Plant the corm concave side up, level with the soil surface in a medium size pot and keep in a warm place.
Once the plants have sprouted and the weather permits, plant them out in your chosen pots or grow the trailing variety for hanging baskets.
Begonias grow well in shady or sunny areas and they enjoy regular watering and a weekly plant feed.
When other plants are beginning to look tired and straggly, your begonias will still be producing an endless profusion of blooms.
At the end of the season, you can keep the corm to plant again next year.
Remove the soil, ensure the corm is dry and wrap in newspaper and keep in a dry place away from frost.
These beautiful begonias really are a ‘Garden Treasure’!
