The Four Best Steam Mop Cleaners

If you have an expanse of tiled floors you'll find yourself mopping on a regular basis because sweeping the floor doesn't always get it clean enough. This is especially true if you have little feet (and hands) around the place, or a few critters. In doing so you'll be using a lot of chemicals. This is not always a good thing. Not only the use of them, but the storing of them. This is why using a steam mop is a good alternative to the traditional mop and bucket: No chemicals. This article will look at some of the best of these steam mops on the market.

Steam mops work by a combination of steam and a cloth, usually microfiber, to clean the floor. The best of them use a water chamber, which you fill and then wait for it to heat, and you then run this along the floor, and the cloth picks up the dirt. You can change the cloth if it is getting too dirty, so you'll need a steam cleaner which has easy to get replacements. The other advantage with steam cleaning is that the floor dries much faster than using traditional mopping. You won't have to worry about chasing people out of the room while the floor dries.

The mops selected here have been rated on a few factors:

  • Ease of use
  • Reliability
  • and flexibility

Steam mops could revolutionise the way you clean your floors, but beware of cheap and nasty ones if you really want to get use out of one. Here are four of the best for your consideration.

Eureka Enviro Steamer

The Eureka Enviro Steamer is an easy to use mop which cleans and sanitised your floor at the same time. It features multiple holes for an even steam, and the mop pads clean easily in the wash after use. This steam mop cleaner does not need anything but water to clean your floor and it does it very effectively.

This mop has many advantages, including its long handle. Anyone who's tall can tell you how tiring it can be to use a mop (or broom for that matter) with a short handle. It also has a low center of gravity, with the weight of the mop concentrated around the head, which makes it easy to move across the floor. The waffle pad picks up a great amount of dirt, which means you do not have to change it over as often as a flat one. On top of all of this it has a long cord. If you have a big room, and are wary of using an extension cord when working with water this is the mop for you.

The steam mop heats up to around 220F, which is quite hot. The steam comes out as a fine stream, not a big puff, but this is effective, meaning your floors will be dry soon after. It's quiet with a swivel head and is very easy to use, as long as you read the instructions.

If you have large floors you may be frustrated at having to fill it up halfway through the job, because at most you'll only get 15 minutes worth of steam at any one time, and the head is large, even if it is a swivel head and you can't get it right up against baseboards and under low pieces of furniture.

That being said, overall, the Eureka Enviro Steamer is a very effective mop, and if you are tall, you'll find it the easiest to use o the four presented here.

Bissell 1867-7 Steam Mop Hard-Floor Cleaner

Bissell is one of the most popular brands on the market. They've made their name for many years with their earlier steam mops, and the Bissell 1867-7 Steam Mop Hard-Floor Cleaner is their latest and best model yet. It works using steam and a microfibre pad which picks up the dirt. This model has a swivel head which means you can get around furniture and other objects.

The water bottle used for steaming is removable making it remarkably easy to fill up, and when in use the pad is easy to change over. It gets hot but perhaps not quite as hot as others. If you start using it before it is heated properly you will end up with pddles on the floor, and this is true of most steam mops.

You may find yourself frustrated with the cord length if you have larger rooms because it is quite short. On top of that, if you are tall you will find this harder to push around as the handle is not very tall. The center of gravity with this mop is a little higher and because if that it can be a bit harder to push. If you have trouble with your back or neck and shoulders this is something to keep in mind.

All that being said, this is a reliable steam mop, which does the job as advertised. You'll find yourself gettng a lot of use out of it.

Euro-Pro Shark S3501 Deluxe Steam Pocket Mop

The Euro-Pro Shark S3501 Deluxe Steam Pocket Mop cleaner is one of the few on the market with more than one head. This is perhaps its biggest selling point. This lightweight mop with effectively steam clean your floors without leaving large puddles of water behind. It also takes considerably less time to heat up than many of its opponents.

This machine comes with an attachment pack, the idea being that you can use it on a variety of surfaces this way. The duster attachment is particularly useful, and the microfiber cloths clean well after use.

This machine heats up very hot. So hot, in fact, that if you are cleaning the floor without shoes you may find it hard to walk on. This could be an issue if you are steam cleaning the floor with children or pets around. I would recommend that you don't. You will also find yourself in need of an extension cord if you are cleaning a large area. It can also be top-heavy and has been known to fall over when you walk away.

The Euro-Pro Shark S3501 Deluxe Steam Pocket Mop is a good steam cleaner which, with a few modifications, could be a great one.

Haan Deluxe Total Home Steam Cleaning System

Haan have created a steam cleaning system rather than just a steam mop. The whole idea is that you can clean not only the floors, but furniture, glass mirrors, and any other hard surface. And for, for the most part, it is a system that works well.

This is one of the few steam mops which will clean right up to the baseboards, and it is light and easy to move around. It holds water for 15 minutes worth of cleaning at a time, so if you have a large area you will end up having to fill it more than once, and there is a wait of a few minutes before it heats up again. The hand held tool means you can clean the grout as well as the tiles, which is a distinct advantage over the other steam mops reviewed here.

You will have to use and extension cord for large areas, unfortunately. It's other real disadvantage is the cloths used with the steam head which do not have a drawstring or any other way to hold the edges in. You have to manually tuck them in and if you need to do this because your floor is especially dirty you may end up with steam burns. Obviously, the designers will have to look at this for future incarnations.

If you are after the flexibility of having tools to steam clean more than just the floor this could be the system to you. The Haan Deluxe Total Home Steam Cleaning System is reliable, and work well. They are light, well made and flexible to your cleaning needs.
