Things Your Daughter Should Learn Before Leaving For College

Typical Boy Things That Girls Should Learn

I know we all think our daughters know everything they need to know before they leave home for college or to a job or the military. Or just to move out from under our wing. But what about the stuff that the typical boy knows how to do? I know that sounds kind of sexist to say that a typical boy knows something and a typical girl does not but the reality is that it's probably true. If you take me for example when I moved out of my parents house I had no problem changing oil or tires on cars. But put me in front of an ironing board with a collared shirt and an iron and tell me to make it presentable and I would call my sister. Just as she would call me when she had to change her oil.

Things Teen Girls Should Learn

Things Teen Girls Should Learn

Here are some things I think teen girls should learn before they leave home and these things are typically things boys learn before they leave home. Just by nature of being a boy

  1. They should learn to mow the lawn.
  2. They should learn to change a tire on a car.
  3. They should learn to change the oil on a car.
  4. They should learn to change the air filter in their car.
  5. They should learn how to use a cordless drill and driver
  6. They should learn to change a light switch and an electrical plug.
  7. They should learn to operate whatever type of barbeque you own gas or charcoal.

Why do young ladies need to learn these typical male things?

Usually all their lives young ladies and girls have had these things done for them by dad or brothers or repair shops and such as that. So they have always had some type of male do these types of things for them. That person now will be replaced by a boyfriend. But, you don't want your daughter to have to have a boyfriend just so she can get their oil changed and their lawn mowed right. But because she truly likes the guy. Now you daughter is entering a time in her life when it's very important that she is somewhat self sufficient. Not to mention if they are going to college they are not going to be having a lot of money to pay for things and the more you can do yourself the less you have to pay. Not to mention that if you have at least done something like changed the oil on your car once or twice and a tire before you know what the repair guy is talking about and he is less likely to be able to cheat you.

Learning These Things Is Easy

Learning These Things Is Easy

Basically this is not something you are going to do the week before your daughter leaves for college but it's a thing you do over time maybe in the last two years before she leaves. It's also not a big production either like hey look I'm teaching your sister to mow the lawn. It's more low key like hey Sally come help me mow the lawn. Or come help me change the tire.

Where To Start

Cutting the Lawn
I would start with mowing the lawn that is pretty easy and most young girls can handle the job well before they can start the lawnmower. I mean after all it's very simply cut the grass in a pattern until it's all cut. When she is old enough to start the lawnmower and cut the lawn herself this one is complete.

Change A Car Tire

This one is a little harder because the strength involved and teach her to use her weight by standing on one side of the star wrench while pulling on the other side to loosen the lug nuts. Since she won't have as much upper body strength to help her out there are still ways she can get this job done. Note this can be dangerous once you have the car up on the jack but that's part of learning about this. Not to mention telling her if she's ever doing this on the side of the road to drive it off the road even if the tire is flat. When I taught my niece this she was convinced that once she had a flat she couldn't keep driving. Sometimes it's safer just to drive slowly on the shoulder to the next exit to change your tire.

Change The Oil On a Car

Your daughter should learn to change the oil on a car. This is a really good one because they charge anywhere from thirty to fifty dollars to change oil on cars. Don't just teach her how to take the oil out and put new oil in and change the filter. But start at the auto parts store and go up to the counter and tell them you need a filter for whatever year car you have and teach her that's how you get parts for a car in an auto parts store because most girls don't know this little stuff. Now take her home and teach her how to change the oil and the only real danger you have to watch out for here is hot oil and hot car parts and oil and grease under your fingernails. Hey to a teenage girl those are big ones. Now that you have done all that next time you do it have her order the parts online I bet she can get them at Amazon.com cheaper then you got them at the parts store. We can all learn from each other in life.

Change The Air Filter on A Car

This one if very easy order the air filter online or from the parts store and if you have a modern car you will have a duct with a cannister and a latch to open it up. Open the latch and carefully take out the old filter replace it with the same type of filter in the same direction and relatch the cannister and you are set to go. Easy as pie.

Learn to Operate A Cordless Drill And Driver

Whenever you are putting something together for them driving screws with your cordless drill driver let them do it or if you are drilling holes in their walls to hang pictures or lights etc. let them do it this is the easiest way to learn and it's a simple thing to learn it's just about doing it. This is a tool they will always need after they leave home after college when they get their own home get them their own cordless drill and driver set. Get a smaller size then you might get for a man since women have smaller hands.

They Should Learn How To Change An Electrical Plug And Light Switch

I know your daughter is not going to be an electrician why should she know how to change an electrical plug and a light switch? Simply so she can understand the basic electrical system of your home and every other building in the world. This one can be dangerous so if you don't know what you are doing don't even attempt it at all. If you do know what you are doing then go ahead teach your daughter how to shut off the power at the breaker box unscrew a cover plats on one of the plugs and use an electrical tester to see if the plug is still hot. If it's not go ahead and teach her how to change the plug out for a new one. Now do the same for a switch. What this teaches her is how the electrical system works but also how to reset breakers when she blows them and how to replace plugs when they burn out before they become a fire hazard.

Teach Them To Use Whatever Type of Barbecue You Use Gas Or Charcoal

We all have our favorite type of barbecue gas or charcoal briquet. Whatever yours is teach your daughter how to barbecue on it. It's just a good life skill and it's really simple to do. Her mother all ready showed her how to cook probably but this is barbecue and it's a little different. Tech her. This is very safe one of the things though is teach her about lighting the gas barbecue is you light your match before you turn on the gas.

I hope this did not come off as sexist in any way just I think we do learn different things growing up and we need to teach our girls some typically boy things and our boys some typically girl things before they leave the home for that big world out there. What do you all think?
