Toilet Paper : Under Or Over Which Way Do You Hang It

Source

Over or under? Folded or straight? People are obsessed with how the roll should be placed on the roller. Polling my friends I found that there was a 50/50 split when it came to hanging the toilet paper.

Why are we so obsessed with the roll that comes in many plies, colors, soft, hard, thick or thin? All of us are particular about the brands and the texture.

People will choose Scott's Tissue because the claim is, that it lasts longer and is easy on the budget. Others choose Charmin, Northern or Cottonelle because it comes in different plies and is softer. Choosing toilet paper, T-P or tissue depends if like your toilet paper made out of virgin products which are formed from chipped wood or recycled paper. Does it matter how it is made? That all depends on the individual who is using it.

So what is the over under obsession when it is used quickly and flushed away into oblivion never to be seen again? After a long discussion with friends, all of us decided it was all about choice. Yes choice. But the wonderful folks at Engineering Degree have taken the time to make a science of it.

The scientific approach was started as a marketing campaign for Engineering Degree, a resource for would-be engineers. They believe there are advantages of our toilet paper being hung under or over.

Hung Over Advantages:

A. Easier to grab the tissue tiles .

B. Location access is easier when grabbing the end.

C. Less likely to gather germs or scrape knuckles on the wall.

The engineers also looked at personality traits and found advantages of a person who hung toilet over.

Personality Traits

A. Over Achiever

B. Stays Organized

C. Always taking charge

Hung Under Advantages:

A. During an earthquake it is less likely for the roll to unravel

B. Children and animals are less likely to grab the roll and unravel it on the floor.

C. The appearance tends to be more tidy.

Personality Traits

A. Very dependable

B. Quite artistic

C. Completely laid back

Notice they did not mention anything about germs being on the tissue? One can only hope that nobody uses the first tissue tile, imagine what is on that?

If you are a person who is all about going-green here is something you need to consider. One tree generates approximately 100 pounds of toilet paper. 83 million rolls are produced a day. We destroy 27,000 trees daily to make toilet paper. Think of how many trees produce oxygen and how long it takes for one tree to grow!

If you are a person like myself who is obsessed with which way your toilet paper hangs. Remember soon- to- be engineers say it is all in the personality of the person. Are you creative? Do you like to be in control? Laid back? Organized? Or dependable? That soft round roll you have in your bathroom can tell a story about your personality. So the next time you think someone is hanging out in your bathroom far to long, it could be they are reading who you are while unraveling the roll.

#6/30

Do You Prefer To Hang Your Toilet Paper Under Or Over

  • Under I don't mind grabbing the wall!
  • Over It is okay if it hits the floor!
  • Anyway I can get it so long as I am not left with just one piece!

Hi AEvans! This hub is so great. I am actually an under person. I would never had thought to write a hub of this subject! Voted up, up and away!

I use to be under but now I'm over b/c I find that it rolls more slowly and doesn't waste as much. Very creative hub. How did you get the idea to write about this? haha. Voted funny, interesting, awesome, and up! Way to go!

I'm an Over-hanger, and obsessive about it. But I'm not as organized as the research showed (assuming organized equates to tidy?). I'm having trouble figuring out how an Under person can be laid-back if they're also worried about earthquakes or cats unraveling the roll.

My cats (when I had them) sometimes had a tissue-attack and made a mess, but I didn't change my rolling habits. Doesn't that make me laid-back? Please? I live in Austin - don't wanna lose my Slacker Status!

Fantastic hub! Voted up, funny and interesting. Also SHARED on my FB page.

Marcy Goodfleisch: I to am a over-hanger. I don't know how they are supposed to be laid-back if they worry about earthquakes and cats. I believe they probably don't worry about the earth moving but place it under for the cats so they are not constantly picking up the tissue. lolo! Your cats made a mess? When I had a new puppy years ago, he attacked the roll when it was hung over. lolol! So I believe it really depends on the animal they are not picky, so long as they can get to that is all that matters. :)

Until I read this hub, I really didn't realize there was a debate about which direction the toilet paper should be hung. I think I am also an over-hanger. It's amazing how small things can generate a interesting debate...

Nix the engineers! Neither my daughter nor I (since she was a child) is "laid back." "Very dependable?" others can depend on her for anything--including her creditors! Me? I am dependable for other people's needs, material and otherwise--not the creditors (have to be honest); neither one of us is dependent. HOWEVER, I'm the artistic one (she has it, just doesn't use it). In different ways we're both "take charge" "Over achievers, etc." She more than I these days--except the "take charge" - She hangs under (contrary to scientists) Decided long ago it was her being left- handed. I automatically "hang it" over, but really don't care. Interesting hub/question! In her house, her bath, I just know it's under, but she fits the profile for over perfectly! So nix the science of personality!!

I always hang it over and I have a special roller to put the roll on so it does not go down to the floor.

As for earthquakes, it could go either way, I just hope not to be on the potty.

Shyron E Shenko: You are another over! I hope when the earth moves it doesn't go into the potty either! lolo! It would be a waste.

LOL! You are funny! I'm an over. But what is funny is that I am a bit of a compulsive when it comes to things like this. I have to correct a badly torn piece of paper and will actually turn the paper the other way round if someone has put it on 'WRONG'.

I also like to fold it into a hotel point for my wife when I want to remind her that I love her :)))

This was a fun article. But strangely to me a serious subject :))

Interesting material and even more interesting comments! You're right, Teylina--she's definitely an over-achiever, and Shyron! Oh, you've got a black sense of humor which AE gets very quickly! Zooloot, what a cool way to remind your wife you love her! Toooo funny.

AE - So the debate rages on huh? Great piece of writing. I choose answer 3 because it's always a bitch when that happens and you don't notice until you make the reach for the paper!

I am an over person. You can see more of the design better, and it is easier to see where the start of the roll is. As a measure of my personality, though, all six of those traits describe me perfectly! I would rather deal with under than not have any paper at all though!

AEvans profile image

AEvans 4 years ago from SomeWhere Out There Author

Millionaire Tips: lol! Over appears to be the consensus for many people; but under is noticed wherever you go. I tend to move the rolls around when I can but that is an obsession of mine. lolo!

AE, I've noticed your in the 30 day hubs and have really been publishing some eye-catching titles. Do you remember Mr Wimple and his please don't squeeze the Charmin? That must have been some effective advertizing cause I know oh so many who are very fussy and particular about their paper. Most of them insist, and I mean insist, on the over hang. And "A" is most of them, and "B" and "C" is all of them.- fun one AE!

This is so funny to me because I just noticed that my boyfriend put a new roll on and it was under. I quickly changed it! Most people I know have it under. I never really thought about why I like it over, I just do lol. But it was funny to see in the personality traits that I fit those of the under people!

Very informative Julianna - way more than I would have ever thought, ha. I fit the personality of the "over hanger" for sure. They don't make colored TP any more, do they? I haven't seen it. Thanks for the fun hub!

My way to deal with the roll is to hang it over. When finished, the roll should be turned with the next tile barely hanging. When the roll is empty, it is to be recycled. That is my way. Now, the wrong way would be anything that contradicts the three points I have made. Thanks for facing this profound social/marital/ecological issue so directly.

I don't mind how my wife hangs the TP. But she minds how I do it - I hang it under. I guess each of our responses to how it hangs pretty illustrates our personality.

Yes it does when it comes to our personality.
