Decorative Pillows are a very inexpensive way to upgrade your rooms. They are simple, elegant ways to take your living area, and especially your living room from looking drab to looking awesome. This hub is going to focus of the many way you can use decorative pillows to upgrade the look in your living room.
When we talk about interior home improvement, what usually comes to mind is extensive home renovations, such as, adding a new room, painting the rooms in the house, revamping the home with new furniture, and so on.
The idea that interior home improvement has to be an expensive, extravagant project is no longer the norm. Improving, or enhancing the look of your home doesn't have to cost you an arm or a leg.
Many apartment renters, and even home owners are opting for easy, less costly ways to decorate. If you're like me, decorating in a seasonal ritual. I can't stand the same look for long, so I have to keep coming up with new ways to decorate my home. Decorative Pillows helps me do just that.
Decorative Pillow Types
Decorative pillows come in all shapes and colors. You can never run out of options. So, depending on your style and preference, there's a decorative pillow out there for you. I personally love the ones that are made of silk or silky fabrics, soft cotton fabrics, and, I tend to stay away from the fringed, tasseled, and quilted pillows due to the rough feel of the pillow's surface. Why? Because I believe that though Decorative Pillows serves to decorate the room they're in, they are also supposed to be comfortable and soft to touch. That's just my take on that.
Some Tid-bits On Decorative Pillows - Worth Reading
These are decorative pillows that are unusually shaped. Some can take the shape of humorous objects like, a monkey, a banana or any other form.
They are strictly for decorative purposes, though they end up being a child's, or maybe even an adult's security pillow.
Sofa Pillows and Couch Pillows
As the name suggests, these are toss pillows for the sofa or couch
To provide support, equilibrium, and comfort on sofas and couches, and sometimes on the floor, that is, on movie nights. And can be literally tossed during football seasons
Literally, Floor Pillows. These are another subset of decorative pillows. They are usually square, large, and higly decorative pillows that are very common among Mediterranean Cultures, such as, Indian or Eqyptian culture.
They serve primarily as seaters and are also used to decorate the floors in such homes. Not for pillow fights.
There are so many ways to use decorative pillows to enhance the look of your living room and beyond. First, you need to look around your living area and determine that area of the room that you're not happy with. It could be your sofa or chair area. That's the area that needs the extreme pillow makeover.
Use Decorative Pillows To Make-Over Your Old Sofa
Old sofas or chairs are good candidates for decorative pillows makeover. If you live in an apartment, and you can't really paint, because most apartment lease forbids that, then focus on just changing the look of your furniture; sofa, chair, or daybed with elegant decorative pillows.
Get a few in bright pastel or primary colors, depending on the color theme of your room. Toss a few of the pillows here and there, and voila, you get a totally new look that won't cost you much.
It's okay to use pillows with contrasting designs or patterns. Just be sure they are of same color blends. That is, in colors that compliment each other, not colors that clashes.
Use Decorative Pillows To Add Colors To Your Rooms
Another great way to use your decorative pillows is when you need to introduce a new color theme into your home decoration. If your walls are already painted in your favorite colors, chance are, you don't want to keep changing the wall colors. One way to get a fresh, new look is to use colorful decorative pillows.
You can choose to blend your choice of pillows colors with existing colors in your home or go with an entirely new color. You can then bring it all together with other decors, such as, accent chairs, lamps, wall paintings, or ottomans.
Use Your Decorative Pillows To Bring Focus
- Hang Small Pillows on Wall - You can bring focus to a part of your room by hanging a few, small but colorful decorative pillows on the wall. These small pillows can be found at most dollar stores at about $1 each, or depending on how small it is, it sometimes sells for $1/pair. They are usually 8" X 8" or less in measurement. Get a few of these pillows, say, about six and cover them in colorful fabric scraps or old shirts/T-shirts. They can be hanged using contrasting colorful ribbons. Just be sure you use washable fabric as they tend to collect dust.
- Place Pillows On Mantel, Over or Around the Fireplace - Decorative pillows that have sentimental value, or that are ornamental in design, not meant for daily contact, can also be placed on living room mantel, over the fireplace (this will keep them out of reach and away from children), or on the floor around a decorative fireplace (pillows and real/live fire don't mix).

Use Decorative Pillows for Extra Cushion
For hard solid sofa and chair, you can use decorative pillows for added cushion. Be sure to select decorative pillow types that are durable, and can be cleaned occasionally. This will allow you to keep pillows looking and smelling fresh as you provide the needed cushion for your house guests.
So, whether you're using decorative pillows to add color and bring focus to your home, or to get that bold, refreshing look, you can be sure that in addition to the colorful, new look, you're also getting the feel of elegance.
When You Need More Than Decorative Pillows
Let's face it, sometimes decorative pillows may not do all the tricks. There may be the need to come up with a few other ways to achieve the look you want for your room. But, if you're concerned with budget, and you don't have much to do a total room transformation, these are a few things to consider:
- Consider painting one side of your room wall with a paint color that brings focus to the blend of colors in your pillows. This should cost you at most, half a gallon of paint (or a gallon), a paint brush, and maybe three hours of painting, if you do it yourself.
- Consider maybe using a sofa/chair slipcover that complements the pillows
- Consider adding a few other décor, such as, a table lamp, an area rug, a table runner, wall paintings or any other décor that compliments your pillows
Implementing these ideas hopeful shouldn't' cost you a arm and a leg, and you'll still get the room upgrade that's not only refreshing, but also fits into your budget. The whole idea is to take your decorating challenge in parts, don't try doing it all at once.
Have fun decorating. I do!
