What Makes Ventless Gas Log Fireplaces Safe Indoors?
Ventless gas fireplace safety and beauty.
Ventless gas fireplace designs have grown enormously in the past few years. Family owned Rasmussen Iron Works created a new type of vent-free gas fireplace called "Alterna" with alternative designs that do not pretend to mimic the effect of a wood burning fireplace. While many unvented gas fireplaces fall short of the goal of mimicking a wood burning fireplace the alternative fireplaces replace ceramic logs with colored fireballs, highly reflective fire glass, geometric fire shapes and natural looking fire rocks. Alternative media in a ventless gas fireplace is a magnificent feat and all the big gas fireplace manufacturers have been hustling to follow the direction pioneered by Rasmussen.
However, the reason this new design was such big news is because every fireplace design used the stacking pattern of logs of minimize contact with flames that creates carbon monoxide. Ventless gas fireplaces have severe laws against fume emissions. Below we have attempted to explain the safety features that allow a certified vent-free gas log to be safe indoors without adequate ventilation to remove fumes created when gas burns. Vent Free Gas Log Fireplace Technology.
With great discoveries being made in the world of science and technology mankind is constantly making great leaps forward to have a better quality of life that prolongs his existence and health on earth. This quality of life not only applies to the present generation of humans alive, but for future generations that will come to use the current inventions or improve any limitations that they may have in the future. One such advancement that has rocketed great demands from Americans is the use of ventless gas log fireplaces.

Why Ventless Gas Fireplaces?
To fully understand the concept and breakthrough that has been made with vent free fireplaces it would be necessary to take a short trip in time to see where this type of fireplace is coming from. A few years ago a fireplace was built with a chimney because this was the only outlet that was used to release toxins and carbon monoxide when woods and gases were burnt. These are referred to as vented fireplaces due to their dependence on the presence of a chimney to release harmful gases and toxins. Today things are a lot different, homes are being built without the presence of chimneys and homes without chimneys are adding gas log fireplaces without the labor and legal difficulties of building ventilation through a roof. How is this possible? The answer to this is simple: a vent-free fireplace does not use the traditional substances that are used in vented fireplaces. Instead they are fueled with natural gas and propane gas logs and any other material that does not produce high quantities of soot or harmful toxins and substances as with traditional fireplaces.

Vent Free Fireplace Safety.
People that are in a room that has a vent free fireplace will not have to worry about breathing in harmful substances because the system is specially designed to produce a very clean air that is free that toxins. It can be quickly installed and even people that have a vented fireplace can still use a vent-free system. When there is not a fireplace in the home a hearth can be added by installing a firebox into the wall with a gas line and gas log set and this will warm any room like a traditional fireplace.

Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS).
Ventless gas fireplaces are very safe and secure. While there is very little production of carbon monoxide when a vent-free fireplace is used, they is still a small quantity to be considered. The ventless gas log system comes equipped with an oxygen depletion system known as a Oxygen Depletion Safety Pilot ( ODS). This safety-pilot device is what detects the amount of oxygen in a room and when this amount is low it automatically disables the flame in the fireplace. Unlike vented fireplaces that are not equipped with this type of security feature, the vent free fireplace is excellent for smaller rooms in the house that do not have a chimney and are nor well-vented.

Fireplace designs and pricing.
The absence of the chimney in this fireplace system also makes the cost much lower to install. There are less materials to purchase because venting flue, termination, fire-stop and flashing are unnecessary. There is no need to cut through the roof or build a chimney and this reduces the overall cost of having heating in one's house. The ventless gas log system is also known for its efficiency when burning fuel with less BTU’s generating more heat and this causes it to operate at a lower cost compared to traditional vented fireplaces.
Chimneys have always been a part of the natural structure and design of the fireplace whether wood-burning or gas logs. A few years back it would be very rare to see a fireplace in a bedroom or a bathroom. With vent-free fireplaces the homeowner has the flexibility of installing a fireplace in just about any room that he or she wishes to have one.

Direct Vent and B Vent Gas Log Fireplace Design.
Some areas have made fireplaces illegal in smaller rooms and sleeping areas so in these rooms an Direct-Vent or B-Vent gas log fireplace can be used. Direct-Vent and B-Vent fireplaces are vented but do not use a chimney and do not need to go through a roof. A vent is built into the back wall of the firebox and a blower pulls fumes out through the walls of the home to the outside. The ventilation runs through the house until it gets to an outside wall just like an air handler or clothes dryer.
Caution and Maintenance.
While the ODS is known for its efficiency is detecting oxygen levels, homeowners can also leave a window open if they suspect any defects with the system. The window should not be merely cracked, but opened to allow enough fresh air to get inside the house. Ventless gas log fireplaces are very similar to gas heaters used in millions of homes worldwide – they just look a lot nicer. The ODS almost always uses batteries for power. More than once or twice I have received telephone calls from customers who claimed their fireplace needed repairs. The batteries must be fresh or the fireplace will not work. As a caution, it is necessary to check with the regulatory bodies for each specific American state to know their guidelines about any possible building codes that may exist that will determine if a vent-free fireplace can be installed in a certain room.
