Usually in temperate climates beets can be grown year round. In cold climate spring through summer/fall. Beets are a shallow root vegetable so nice loose well drained soil that is rich in organic matter is a good start. Pests.... any of the root boring beetles, earwigs, etc. For the green... aphids, and birds. Chard is another great crop to grow with beets. Spacing: about 2 inches apart so that they have room to develop. I would encourage you to plant several different varieties of beets...including the white ones. Enjoy.
