How can I prevent fruit flies whilst baking bread?

I hand bake bread weekly and I am finding a lot of fruit flies in the kitchen whislt the dough is proving. I then spend the the week getting rid of them, only to get more when I bake another loaf. Is there anything I can do to stop them?

Just bake em in the bread, people will think they're poppy seeds...

Fill a glass half ful with balsamic vinegar and a little squirt of dish soap.  Use a rubber band to cover the glass with plastic wrap and use a fork to poke a bunch of holes in the wrap. The flies crawl in to get to the vinegar and die because of the dish soap.  Takes a while, but it will kill all the flies!

In addition to danielleantosz's answer, you can also take a glass jar or beer bottle, put a small piece of banana or a 1/4 inch of fruit juice in it, create a paper funnel with a tiny hole, put the funnel in the jar and tape the funnel to the jar.

Fruit flies love bananas or anything sweet and/or yeast like.   We use these jars+funnels traps in our fruit flies research labs to collect our research "escapees" - the university that I work at houses over 40,000 strains for fruit flies for research studies!

Once trap become full, just stick it in your freezer and that will kill all the flies off.

Good luck and that homemade bread sound great!

Thanks for the replies, will definately try the poppy seed thing!

I was actually hoping for some suggestions on stopping the flies coming in the first place, something I can do to mask the smell (or whatever attracts them), of the yeast.
