Today, I am a homeowner. From the time I finished college until my wife and I had been married eight years, I always rented. I was able re-finance my current home when mortgage rates were at 4.25 percent, but instead of a lower note, I chose a shorter term. When I lost my last job, the first thing I did was take enough from my 401K to pay off the mortgage. I now have an asset that I can use in the future.
So I have been a renter, who had landlords that would not fix anything or were always hanging around. I am now a homeowner who knows that if it breaks, it is my expense to repair it.
