What are some natural ways to keep your yard/house clean & free of chemicals?
There is so much pollution outside & nothing for cleaning is good for us to breath in...
You have touched a subject which is necessary for all of us and I am really glad to go through the different ways you have described.
I wrote a hub on the subject of green cleaning. Maybe you can pick up some tips there. Good luck!
I bought and use a steam mop and wand, all that goes in it is distilled water and you can clean virtually any surface with it. Natural cleaners can also be made with vinegar, baking soda and various essential oils. Also get a vacuum with a good HEPA filter to remove allergens. For wiping down wood furniture, you can use a bit of olive oil (add a few drops of lemon essential oil if you like light fragrance).
There is one way in particular to accomplish this; however, it may not be what you wish. If you change your surrrounding yard so it can be certified by the national wildlife Foundation as an official Wildlife Habitat you will indeed elliminate the need for a lawn mower, grass and their supporting chemicals to ensure a sterile and green-grassy areas. When we moved ito our house the front yard was quite well shaded by oak trees and the lower strata of grass, because of the shade, was struggling. Since we live in the south and the sun's radiation can be somewhat damaging and our energy (cooling) costs were climbing. I decided to transform our yards into a shadeful xeroscaped wildlife habitat. It was not easy; however, it was not costly either. A matter of fact over the years it has transformed into cost savings for us. Our energy bill is lower due to the significant shade and the bunches of trees and shrubs have insulated us from noise pollution and have even broken the significant winds of August, September and October. If I may add I am not exhausting time and fuel to continuously cut grass not unlike a hamster on a tread mill. The trees are wonderful at intercepting both noise and air pollution before it impacts on us... Trees and shrubs purify air...
I use vinegar and baking soda, for most of my indoor cleaning. Baking soda with vinegar is great for unplugging drains, by the way. I also have squirted lemon or orange in a bucket of water to get that citrus scent. I do not buy chemicals to clean. Newspaper damped with water was windows and mirrors very well. very well.
I use castile soap and essential oils. The castile soap is all natural, and is great for everything. It needs to be diluted in water, and a gallon will last you a year. You can clean the counters, floors, windows, sinks, and it even gets scum off the tub. By adding essential oils, you add scent, as well as antibacterial agents. Some good antibacterial essential oils to use are thyme, lavender, and eucalyptus. For a fresh scent, you can combine cloves and orange.
Happy Cleaning!
