bark peeling from the ground to about 3 feet up the trunk. What could be causing this and will this make the tree unsafe? It sits right next to our house and wouldn't want it to blow over during a storm. Thanks for your help.
It sounds like: Verticillium Wilt. Put that into google, there will be zillions of results. If it is, it's curtains for your maples, and any of the other susceptible plants, and there are many, you'll need to find immune stock.
