If someone where to buy an 1855 home covered with cheap aluminum siding from the 1960's - how would you recommend to add insulation?  From the outside?  With a vapor barrier?

Well I would personally recommend tearing off the old siding, which sounds like might be the best idea anyways.  Then once the siding has been removed use closed-cell spray foam insulation and spray two inches around the entire house.  This will not only give you incredible insulation performance, but it will also qualify as the vapor barrier you are looking for as well.

After stripping the siding you could also wrap the exterior with R-Max insulating boards (4 x 8 sheets) then fur out and install a new finish wall material.

Wonderful ideas!  Thank you very much!
