How to Choose Swimming Pool Filters

How to Choose Swimming Pool Filters

One of the most important components in the swimming pool is the water filter. Not being the only instrument for cleaning and purifying water - the skimmer just collect the most visible dirt - is, however, the one that plays a more crucial task to keep the water crystal clear and attractive. Especially when you consider that is the filter that removes impurities that, in most cases, we only realize were there when the pool has lost all its beauty and look unhealthy!

Although there are different types of filters, they all work the same way: the pool water, sucked into the skimmer through the force of the pump goes into a tank containing a special filtering material. It then returned to pool, completing a cycle that should be frequent: depending on usage, it is advisable a complete water cycle per day.

What we refer to as "cycle" is the passage of the entire pool water through the filter, a process whose duration depends on several factors: size of the pool (or in other words, the respective amount of water), pump power/engine and also the very capacity of the filter used. By choosing these components should take into account all these factors so that the cycle will not take too long: the domestic swimming pools is recommended for 8 hours.

Types of swimming pool filters

In general, the filters for pools operate in the same way and adapt to all types.

There are three different types:

  • The sand filters are by far the most popular, while are the ones that have less maintenance charges. Sand is a natural filtering agent used by nature, and this principle is applied to this system. The clean water is made, as the name implies, by passing the water through a sandbox. The big advantage is the durability of the deposit, which could last even ten years, although it is advisable to change it to seven. By allowing the backwash is also extremely easy to clean.
  • The cartridges filter is a cleaning based in replaceable cartridges, which last about a year and should be cleaned weekly. Its operation is similar to filters of diatomaceous earth, except that the filtering is done based on material manufactured and unnatural. The big advantage is the ease of cleaning and installation, on the other hand, the cartridges are considerably more expensive than the alternatives.
  • Finally, the filters of diatomaceous earth, authentic tops range. Diatoms are microscopic fossilized creatures, used in the form of a white powder, applied in a grid, which has an unparalleled effectiveness: work as micro-sponges, letting the water and retaining dirt that is not even visible to the naked eye. Unfortunately, this efficacy is paid dearly, and cost, either for equipment or maintenance are quite high. On the other hand, allow backwash, which means that cleaning is also available.

How do you choose?

That said, the immediate question will probably be "what is the best?".

It is true that they all have different levels of filtering, but should also consider the efficiency. Differences in quality are not as important as other factors, such as your budget, your willingness to do regular maintenance, or even the existing supply in your area.

Should take into account the capacity of the pool and the power of the pump, so you know the flow of water speed. Will then need to reconcile these elements with the size of the filter so you can create a cycle that isn't very long. The only suggestion we make is not to be restricted to the tangential values: if you came to the conclusion that you need a filter with capacity of 10m3/h, will be a good idea to choose the top model. Increasing this capacity will decrease the frequency of the cleaning, but keep in mind that if too large, the pump will not have power to fill it.

Still, as mentioned, it is possible to rank the effectiveness of each of these filters. Other things being equal, the diatomaceous earth filters are undoubtedly the most effective, with a filtration capacity of around 7 micrometers (or microns). Following the cartridge filter with about 20, and finally the sand, with 60. A micrometer is a millionth of a millimeter: to have a reference, the human eye is only capable of identifying objects up to 35 micrometers.

In short: if you really want a product of the best quality, the solution is diatomaceous earth. It is better to repeat, this should not be the sole criterion.

Clean and backwash

For the filter to perform its function correctly, you must perform periodic maintenance, which in most cases comes down to their washing. The frequency of this procedure varies with the use of the pool, but the best indicator will be: when checking that the water does not look as clean as before, is a sign that the filter needs cleaning.

With the cartridge filter, cleaning is extremely simple: just remove it and use water jets to remove dirt that has been accumulating since. Additionally you can apply a treatment, placing it in a container full of water and trisodium phosphate mixed with muriatic acid (the proportion of 250 ml per 20 liters of water in each substance), leaving it to stand for about an hour, and passing the water again before the refit.

The diatomaceous earth and sand filters generally facilitate the backwash. As its name indicates, is to reverse the circuit of water when passing through the filter, carries the dirt that has accumulated since, and are subsequently expelled into a sewer. Some filters may already include a valve that allows reverse flow of water (this factor may also be determinant in their choice), but can purchase one separately.

Perform back-washing is a simple process: Start by turning off the pump, letting the water circulation stops, turn the valve and restart the pump. Leave the water running for some time, until you realize that it is leaving cleaner.

If the system is not directly connected to the drain (thus needing a hose to direct water), there is a utility that can give you: what for us will be dirt acts as an excellent natural fertilizer (provided that the chlorine level not exceed 3ppm, otherwise harmful), so you could even use to water your yard or lawn.

Finally, do not forget to replenish the pool water now lost.
