Home made Outdoor Deep Water Culture (DWC) Hydroponics Part 1

This is one week after I transferred my plants out of soil to my newly build deep water culture hydroponics system. They are 27 gallon containers, but I dont fill them up all the way. I only fill till the water level is one inch above my net pots. thats about 18 gallons. My pump is 70 liters per minute, its way over kill for only 60 gallons of water but I bought a big one because I plan on expanding. I have one 18" air stone in each super box. Urban Grower: Medical Marijuana Heart of Gold

Went to a surprise party near Vancouver a few years ago. The surprise was this mysterious medical marijuana grower on the redwood deck outside the party house.

The guy was built like a tank but had a very friendly face. He was wearing sunglasses even though sun was nowhere to be seen. All the while, the dude was rolling Cheech and Chong joints crammed with a quarter ounce or more of freshly-ground BC marijuana each.

No sooner did he roll, lick, light and pass his marijuana phatties, but he’d reach into an industrial-size ziplock, yank out a handful of sticky, perfectly-manicured reddish-green buds, and start grinding more bud. This guy was a human machine, manufacturing huge blunts! Over the course of the party, his weed was responsible for rocketing dozens of brains into outer space.

He introduced himself to me as “Remo.” Was accompanied by his lovely wife Sandy.

His cigar joints tasted like candy and stayed lit easily, burning to white ash...a for-sure sign this guy was a skilled grower. All the other BC bud I’d been smoking was unflushed chemweed that made butane lighter companies rich because the stuff wouldn't stay lit. That BC chemweed tore your lungs out.

Thank the gods that Remo's medical marijuana had smoothness, kind flavor and THC punch like the finest outdoor organic bud...but he'd grown it indoors using synthetic hydroponics nutrients and a space age grow room.

One thing I noticed about him right away: no matter how much he smoked, he never got sloppy, brain-dead, or burnt out. And I just had to ask him how he was able to provide such copious amounts of medicine.

Turns out that Remo was a musician who enjoyed using and growing marijuana medicinally. He wanted to grow more...a lot more.

He won’t smoke an OG Kush before 8 pm, because its heavy Indica high couchlocks him and makes him eat a lot and then fall right to sleep, perhaps leaving an open, melting container of ice cream in his wake.

CO2 Fuels Marijuana Yield!

Marijuana plants breathe what we exhale, and marijuana plants love CO2 because it fuels photosynthesis for faster growth and bigger yields. When you add CO2 to your marijuana hydroponics grow room, you greatly increase your return on investment.

Ambient CO2 concentration is 300-400 parts per million (ppm), but be aware that many cities such as Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Denver often have intermittent “CO2 domes” floating on top of them that add CO2 and other air pollutants to your urban air. Check with your local air quality agencies about that. Urban air pollution is a killer.

Inside your marijuana grow room you can add CO2 to increase concentrations to 1000-1500 ppm so your plants grow about 25% faster in grow phase and produce 10-35% more harvest weight.

It is a matter of opinion, but many believe that added CO2 also helps your marijuana plants produce more THC.

Extra CO2 in your hydroponics room enables your plants to handle more heat. With ambient levels of CO2 in the regular range, you keep your hydroponics room temperature at 70-74F. But when you’ve added CO2 to create 1000-1500 ppm , your cannabis plants tolerate temperatures as high as 85F.

When you increase CO2 concentrations in your grow room air, you also have to feed your marijuana plants more hydroponics nutrients, more light, and more water. If you don’t give them more food, water and light, the extra CO2 may hurt your plants instead of help them.

You can use dry ice, fermentation, and a variety of contraptions to add CO2. Dry ice and fermentation are cheap and simple, but you can’t precisely control how much CO2 they produce.

Serious marijuana growers use hydroponics devices that distribute CO2 from tanks or produce CO2 by burning propane or natural gas. Distributing from tanks requires using the proper regulator to control output, but even then you may have a hard time getting precise levels. It’s important to have precision control over CO2 levels because too much CO2 (above 1500 ppm) can damage your plants.

Boise Home Hydroponic Window Farm

Recently installed kitchen hydroponic windowfarm. Uses water pump to circulate the water from a 2 gallon reservoir through 10 hanging pots. Climbing rope is used to hang the pots. The system is hooked up to a timer that turns it on once for ten minutes every 3 hours to cut down on electricity use and keep the annoying pump noise to a minimum.

It's a complete greenhouse kit system with hydroponics, irrigation, soil-less growing and a very efficient space layout to grow organic vegetables and herbs year round. The greenhouse floor plant is 8x12. Normally the greenhouse walls are clear polycarbonate but since it's been raining they are covered in condensation.

We tried to show the inside of the greenhouse design and closeup of all the vegetable plants. Compare to the other videos taken 2 weeks and 3 weeks prior, the vegetable and herb plants grow fast. This video is from 12/21/10, it's hard to believe it's December, the plants are growing as if it was March.
This video shows a close look of the tomato plants, all the herb plants like chives, basil, cilantro, mint and a few others, there are also cucumber, zucchini, squash, lettuce, micro greens and strawberry plants. Some of the plants we planted from seed on week 2 of the project and others like the older tomato and cucumber plants were brought from an older version of this vegetable hydrofarm. All of the vegetables grown are organic from hybrid seed.

Hydroponic Vertical Garden

DIY hydroponic garden. This is my vertical garden. Started with the idea of getting the most production out of a small space. By growing in the vertical styrofoam pots, you insulate the roots of the plant keeping them warm in winter and cool in the summer. By planting in coco coir, you have a completely nutreal media free of alkanlinity and PH; coco coir is necessary when using these vertical pots.

Currently, I have 120 Florida 91 tomato plants (please google Florida 91 to learn more about this remarkable heat and disease resistant tomato developed by the University of Florida). Each plant has produced almost 10 pound of tomatoes since the end of December 2008 and are still producing tomatoes expected to go through the summer. However, in recent years it has become more an more difficult to find well cultivated vegetables and fruits. Commercial tomatoes are harvested almost two weeks before their maturity to keep them firm, so they don't spoil and are easier to transport. There upon, they go into cold storage for weeks where they are kept in ethylene chambers to help them acquire color along with assisting the process of final ripening. This is the reason why tomatoes from the supermarket have that luscious, smooth, red and thick skin, yet have little or no tradition tomato flavor.

Growing hydroponic tomatoes yourself might be difficult to start with but a bit of investment in time and money will reap you tasty, juicy tomatoes which you can really enjoy. Hydroponics is an intensive, complicated system of cultivation whereby we use artificial lighting and grow plants without soil. The nutrients that the tradition soil provides are given to the plant through a water solution mixed with nutrients that the roots can easily absorb. This removes the need to use any harmful chemicals to kill those insects.

There are two types of water solution systems, open or non-recovery systems and closed or recovery systems. In the open systems, the water nutrient solution is not reused whereas in closed systems additional solution is replenished and reused. This is more economical than the normal soil gardening as it ensures nutrients are not wasted. Another advantage of hydroponic systems is the fact that since the tomato plants directly absorb the nutrient rich water through their roots, they don't need a lot of it for energy creation, which means most of it can be used for the growth of plants leading to a bigger yield. Home Hydroponics - How Much Space Do I Need?

Many home hydroponics gardeners miscalculate how much space is needed to produce a successful harvest. It will depend on what crops you intend to grow but the space must be large enough for the plants, the reservoir, high intensity lights, ventilation fans, exhaust fans, electrical wiring and more. For sure a hydroponics system will not fit under the kitchen sink and the smallest practical hydroponics garden will be the size of a clothes closet.

Grow tents are about the size of a clothes closet. They are lightproof enclosures designed specifically for an indoor hydroponics garden. Grow tents can be erected anywhere there is sufficient space, in the loft, conservatory or garage. They come complete with many features to enhance your plant's growing environment.
Made from 100% lightproof material, they normally have a highly reflective lining with access holes for intake and exhaust fans, lightproof vents for good air circulation and fixtures and fittings for the electrical installation and plant support.

A typical grow tent is 1.2m X 1.2m X 2m high. The most important source of nutrition for healthy plants is not the nutrient mix but the carbon dioxide in the air. In a typical plant, water accounts for approximately 95% of its weight. The remaining 5% is made up from dry matter in the form of carbohydrate, converted by the plant from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It is therefore important to maintain adequate air exchanges in the growing environment so as not to starve the plants from this vital source of nutrition. Ventilation and air circulation are vital in controlling humidity and temperature.

Plants often grow best in an environment with 40-75% humidity and temperature between 18-23degC. If you cannot control these two factors you are likely to experience problems with disease, stunted growth, small yields and pest infestation.

So, make sure you consider the plant environment above the water line in terms of ventilation, humidity and temperature control before you take over your wife's walk-in clothes closet, if you dare.

4. Aeroponics. This is a very interesting method as here the roots of the plants are made to hang in the air and they are misted regularly with a solution that is composed of minerals and nutrients.

So what are the benefits of this method of cultivation? Many researches and studies have already established that the hydroponics system of cultivation is more effective and has many advantages. The first advantage is that plants grow much faster under this method as compared to the soil system. The yield of the plants from hydroponics is higher than other methods of cultivation. This method also uses much less water, and so in arid areas and wherever there is a shortage of water this method is a huge success. Further there are also fewer cases of insects and other pests damaging the crops in this method of cultivation. This is my first attempt at Hydroponic Gardening. I grew a variety of different vegetables in 9, 3 inch net cups inside a plastic rubbermaid container. Overall it worked very well, although some plants were more successful than others.

One of the main problems, which I figured would happen was there was not enough space for the variety of plants that I wanted to grow. Things like tomato and pepper plants get very big. Secondly, my light source was not strong enough for the fruit bearing plants such as the tomatoes and peppers.

The peppers did produce some fruits but with stronger lights there would have been many more. Finally, I was surprised that despite the different tds requirements, the plants all did fairly well together. Overall it required minimal supervision and was a lot of fun! Ultrasonic Fogger in Hydroponics

Aeroponics is the best form of hydroponic system you can get. Aeroponics hydroponics systems are unique in the fact that in these types of systems the roots are actually suspended in mid-air. These roots are then watered with a highly oxygenated nutrients spray for you. The size of the water droplet differs depending on the type of aeroponic hydroponics system you have. The two primary types that we will talk about in this article are the pump driven aeroponic hydroponics system and the ultrasonic fogging driven aeroponics hydroponics system.

We'll start talking about the pump driven aeroponics hydroponics first, because it is by far the most common. In this type of system your plants roots are hung suspended in midair. A submersible MAG drive pump such as a 250 gallons per hour pump can be used to power a series of 360° microjet misters. These ministers will break down the water droplets to about 25 microns which is very fine particle droplet creating a light nutrients mixed that will surround your plants roots. This type of light misting in your plants roots zone and will really help to accelerate your plants root growth. The pump can be powered by either turning it on and off in 15 minute increments essentially to allow your plants to dry and then moistened again. This type of wet and dry technique has shown to increase growth performance substantially in hydroponics use.

In the other type of aeroponic hydroponic configuration you would use an ultrasonic fogger, rather than a pump to create the nutrient particle. In the case of using an ultrasonic fogger in the hydroponic grow box application the fogger would actually create a fine micron misty fog rather than a 25 micron water droplet. This much finer particle will look much more like a heavy fog or floating mist. With this type of system hundreds of thousands of tiny hairs will actually develop on your plants roots. As if these tiny hairs were there to pick up each and every water droplet that surrounds it. Again the ultrasonic fogging aeroponic hydroponics system can be controlled with a timer 15 minutes on a 15 minutes off so you have both the wet and dry to keep your roots happy and growing fast.

By using an aeroponics hydroponics system either with the pump driven or ultrasonic fogger driven system you will grow your plants with a maximum possible efficiency. We recommend aeroponics hydroponics systems over all others types of hydroponic systems. For more free information on hydroponics check out the videos section of the homegrown hydroponics website. It should also be mentioned that other systems such as deep water culture or drip systems can actually give your plants too much water and therefore leads to root problems. Control Plant Diseases Before It Destroy your Plants

Plant diseases are usually produced by different kinds of organisms. Diseases that affects the leaf and the stems are bacteria, fungi or viruses. Soilborne diseases on the other hand are caused by various fungi. Bacterial diseases are caused by bacteria who are unable to manufacture their own food thus they depend on the host plant for food depriving the plants of the nutrients necessary for a healthy growth.

Fungal diseases are the most widespread plant maladies. Fungi parasitically obtain their food from green plants, causing diseases in the process. Fungi produces spores in great number which are tiny reproductive bodies. These spores can be carried by wind or water. Each spore will germinate and grow producing new infections. Viral diseases are viruses capable of invading plant tissue and reproducing in it. Viruses can be spread by aphids, leafhoppers and thrips. Even humans can spread viruses by propagating virus-infected plants.

Other factors that causes this are the plants own interaction with unfavorable environmental factors. This includes air pollution, a deficiency or excess of sunlight which is its main source of nutrients. It can also be the climate. Climate adaptability in plants is very important. Plant disease can be caused by climate which is too hot, too cold, too dry or too wet.

Kinds of Leaf and Stem Diseases

1. Anthracnose – infects leaves, produces large, irregular brown blotches which causes premature dropping of leaves.

2. Black Spot – it appears on leaves and stems as roughly circular spots of black with fringed edges, usually circled with yellow.

3. Dutch Elm Disease – also known as DED. Can be spread from infected trees to nearby healthy ones by natural root grafting.

4. Fireblight – it is carried to blossoms by splashing water, flies and other insects. Infection can also enter a plant through any fresh wound in the bark or foliage.

5. Leaf Spot – it is red, brown, yellow, or black disease spots on leaves and stems. Severe infection of this disease can cause some plants to defoliate.

6. Peach Leaf Curl – the curled and distorted leaves may be tinged with red, pink, yellow or white. Later they may become covered with white spores that can be carried by the wind to other leaves or plants.

7. Powdery Mildew – if first appears as small gray or white circular patches on plant tissue, spreading rapidly to form powdery areas of fungus filaments and spores.

8. Scab – the scab fungus differs from other leaf-infecting fungi in that the dark spots on leaves represent fungus growth on the foliage rather than areas of dead tissue.

9. Rust – this disease is specific to a certain type of plant. Rose rust will not infect hollyhocks and vice versa.

Soil borne Diseases

1. Damping Off – the stem of a seedling collapses at or near the soil surface and the seedling topples. It can also rot the seedling before it emerges from the soil or causes the seed to decay before sprouting.

2. Oak Root Fungus – the fungus kills its host by gradually decaying the roots and moving into the main stem, where it girdles the plant.

3. Root Rots, water Molds – the damage to roots from overwatering is, in almost all cases, not caused by water itself but by water-mold fungi that thrive when free water stands too long around roots – especially when soil is warm.

4. Verticillium Wilt – it invades and plugs the water conducting tissue in the roots and stems. A common symptom is a wilting of one side of the plant.

Ways to Control Plant diseases:

As with any kind of diseases, prevention is still the best line of defense. As much as possible choose plants that are disease resistant. Also make sure that planting locations and conditions don’t encourage diseases.

There are products readily available in the market for this purpose. One classification are called preventives – as the word suggest it prevents diseases from occurring, but these products are ineffective once the disease are already established. The other classification is called eradicants – once the disease is established, eradicants are helpful in controlling them.

Before using any of these products, it will be wise to read the labels very carefully. Be sure to apply the products only if the plant is listed. It can cause damaged if applied to inappropriate plants.

Here are some of these products and the common disease they each control:

1. Sulfur – used to prevent powdery mildew, scab and rust. It is one of the oldest and safest fungicides

2. Lime Sulfur – It controls some mites, scale insects and thrips. Also used to prevent various leaf spots, peach leaf curl, and powdery mildew.

3. Captan – for prevention or eradication of damping-off, leaf spots and many other fungal diseases.

4. Triforine – for prevention or eradication of powdery mildew, rust, black spot and a variety of other diseases.

5. Copper Compounds – often used to prevent fireblight, peach leaf curl, and shot hole diseases.

6. Chlorothalonil – it prevents diseases on lawns, fruits, vegetables and ornamentals.

7. Triadimefon – effective against azalea petal blight. It can also prevent powdery mildew, rust and some lawn diseases.

I planted these Bell Peppers from seed on July 9th, 2009. I took this video on November 15th 2009. I started to get peppers at the end of September. I currently have about 15 peppers on the plants. The more I pollinate, the more peppers I get. It’s really a pepper machine!

10 Tips for Organic Gardening Uses of Comfrey

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is just one of those plants that every organic garden must have growing. It also has great merit as a medicinal plant. This plant serves us so well. Propagation is by root division. But be careful with this plant as it will grow from the tiniest piece of root.

OK, on to some of it’s best uses (and some lesser known ones)!

1. A valuable addition of bulk to the compost heap. It is an extremely good micro-nutrient accumulator – a complete fertilizer in a plant. The leaves are full of nitrogen, silica, calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium.

2. Comfrey is a great compost activator.

3. Use as a mulch around your veggies. You can harvest growth several times a year, from mid spring onwards. Make sure you put the leaves in the sun for a few hours to wilt so that it doesn’t take root.

4. It can be used as a fertilizer, placed directly in trenches before planting potatoes, beans, peas etc. (again make sure you wilt the leaves).

5. The very deep root system of this plant makes it ideal for breaking up heavy clay soils. This will also bring up nutrients that have leached deep into the soil.

6. Create a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer. Place comfrey leaves in a small amount of water for a week or more, then dilute 10:1. This liquid feed is excellent for potassium hungry crops, such as tomatoes.

7. Grow comfrey as a grass barrier. Chop up pieces of root, place in a hollow in your mulch about every 40cm / 16inches and cover with compost or good soil. Over time this will create a thick barrier that even couch doesn’t like to compete with. Comfrey dies down with the winter frost, but so does grass. Comfrey will start growing in spring before grasses do.

8. Use as a nutrient trap at the bottom of your garden (if you have a slope). It will grow lush and prevent nutrients escaping your garden by leaching out.

9. Expand your garden beds. Divide the roots to create a lot of new plants very quickly. Very useful as a ground cover.

10. Comfrey is sometimes known as “knit-bone” as it has been traditionally used as a poultice to heal broken bones. It is high in calcium which may be why it is used in this way.

Growing Conditions

Comfrey is a hardy herbaceous plant which thrives in most types of soil. It will survive frosts, but tends to loose most of its leaves through winter, then bounces back with the arrival of warmer weather. You will get the best yield of lush leaves if you provide it with a moist, fertile soil.

Comfrey is a great companion plant for most vegetable crops.

Roots

Roots and Soil

As you may have guessed, the type of soil in your garden plays an important role in overall plant health and vigor.

In general, most plants like a loose, well-drained soil with lots of organic material. Organic material can be peat moss, shredded bark, composted or decomposed plant material, some form of manure (generally cow manure), or even worm casings or rice hulls to name a few.

Potting soil is usually some combination of the above list and may have little or no actual “dirt” in it. Organic material helps to maintain moisture content levels in the soil and helps to prevent soil compaction.

Stem

The stem, stalk or trunk is the “super highway” of the plant. It starts at ground level and supplies the food and water from the roots to the leaves and flowers or fruit.

Leaves

The leaves of a plant take the food and water from the roots through the stem and with the help of sunlight will turn the water and nutrients into energy. Hydroponics is a scientific way of growing plants in a soil less environment with the use of nutrient solutions. The word hydroponics was derived from two Greek words, namely, hydro (water) and ponos (labor). In this method, plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution in an inert medium like perlite, baked clay pebbles or rockwool.

The three most important benefits of using hydroponics as a method of growing plants are: first, its ability to produce much higher crop yields compared to conventional gardening; second, it can be practiced even in places where ordinary gardening is impossible. With hydroponics, deserts, rocky and stony land in mountainous districts or barren areas can be made productive at a relatively low cost. And third, since it is usually used in a controlled environment, crops can be grown year-round, offering multiple harvests throughout the year, depending on each crop’s growing cycle.

Other advantages of using this method include faster plant growth and lesser plant infections and diseases. It is always preferable to buy a nutrient mix which is sold especially for hydroponic use and is a “complete” plant food. To be “complete”, a hydroponic nutrient needs to have the essential elements for plant growth. These are: Nitrogen (N), Potassium (K), Phosphorus (P), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Sulphur (S), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Molybdate (Mo), Boron (B), and Chlorine (Cl).

2 Part Hydroponics Nutrients: Why are they Important?

Hydroponic plants need the correct temperature and humidity, moisture, light, air, the absence of pathogens and the correct ratios of nutrients in order for them to thrive. Thus, it is important for any novice hydroponic grower to know the essentials of plant nutrition to be able to maximize the genetic potential of his hydroponic plants.

A hydroponic nutrient solution is composed of water, dissolved air and a dozen essential elements in their proper proportions. These essential elements are divided into two categories: the macronutrients and the micronutrients. The macronutrients are required to be supplied in greater amounts, while the micronutrients are delivered to the plants in smaller quantity. To make the most out of your nutrient feeding, it is advisable to use 2 part hydroponics nutrients to help in the different stages of your plants’ development.

The nutrient solution that you supply them plays a very important role in giving you a bigger and healthy crop. It is also very important to know that 2 part nutrients always work better compared to one part formulations.

This is because a two part formulation is carefully designed to be more readily available to your plants at the right times, unlike a one part formula that has the tendency to cause build ups in your hydroponics systems because of the many elements present in it.

Plants require different ratios of nutrients during their vegetation and flowering phases. Therefore, it is more appropriate to use a formulation that contains 2 part nutrients. This is to maximize the potential of your plants in specific stages of their growth. These types of formulations are very competent in giving your plants the precise nutrients that they should absorb in a particular growth phase.

The 2 part nutrients focus mainly on what your plants need as they flourish in either their vegetative or flowering stage. For example, in the flowering stage, potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) should be more highly available because these macronutrients can contribute to budding, flowering and fruiting in plants. Leeks are part of the onion family. They have a milder flavor, however, and are often preferred to their stronger tasting cousin. Tip #1 In the trickle irrigation system, you need to take special care in making sure your gravel is the correct size. Lateral movement of the solution along the roots is necessary. The idea size of gravel is anywhere between one-eighth and one-fourth inch in diameter.

One method that does not get mentioned often is called “sack culture”. With this method, you poke holes in a thin bag made of polyethylene. This bag is approximately six inches. A hydroponic solution is introduced into the top of the bag and allowed to make its way down through the planting medium within the sack. Excess solution drains from the bottom. 

Tip #3 You may find it desirable to add calcium, nitrogen or sulfur to your hydroponic garden to help it produce better. Calcium nitrate will provide both calcium and nitrate nitrogen in the best forms for your fruits and vegetables. If you still need extra nitrogen, provide it through the use of potassium nitrate or potassium sulfate, which will also add any needed sulfur. Magnesium sulfate can also be used if necessary.

If the temperature falls too low, the flowers will become sterile. Acidity needs to be constantly monitored. Peas grow best when the pH level is between 6.0 and 7.0. If it falls below this level, calcium uptake by your peas will be jeopardized. 

Either high-pressure sodium light or low-pressure sodium light can be used as supplementary lighting in your hydroponic growing area. Make sure the lamps are positioned so that the lower parts of your pea plants receive an adequate amount of light. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is necessary for plants to enable photosynthesis. Without CO2, or without enough, plants will not be able to thrive. Many hydroponic gardeners find it helps plant growth to provide an extra amount of CO2. This can be done in a variety of different ways. The two most common ways to increase the amount of CO2 in your hydroponic garden is by utilizing bottled CO2 or by purchasing a CO2 generator.

The most popular method of introducing added CO2 is the bottled CO2 method. This involves a system that includes a CO2 tank, a flow meter, a pressure gauge and a valve. The tank itself holds the CO2 gas. This gas is released through the valve, which must have some type of timer attached to it to help regulate the use of the CO2. Both the flow meter and pressure gauges help the hydroponic gardener judge whether the level of CO2 is appropriate for his or her needs. One more expensive way of producing additional carbon dioxide in your greenhouse is by the use of dry ice. Dry ice is actually a solid form of CO2. When allowed to “melt” it returns to its gaseous state. This method should really only be used in a pinch. There is almost no control over the amount of gas released into the air or at what rate the dry ice will become gas. There is a lot of room for potential danger to plants using this method.

Adding extra CO2 will not, however, help increase plant growth unless light and temperature are also at optimum levels. Proper nutrition and water are also essential factors in optimal growth. Hydroponic Gardening-Gerberas

Gerberas are quickly becoming a popular flower in the hydroponic garden. These large, daisy-like flowers are easy to grow and come in a variety of colors, In order to start growing your own gerberas, you will need to gather together some type of growing medium, a hydroponic system that can deliver nutrients once a day and provide drainage, your plants and a wish to see results.

Temperatures during the day should remain around seventy degrees Fahrenheit, while night temperatures can be lowered to sixty degrees Fahrenheit. Gerberas do not need a great deal of light. Cilantro is a parsley-type herb. When grown for leaves only, it is called cilantro but if allowed to continue growing to seed, it becomes what is called coriander. It takes an average of a week to ten days for seeds to germinate and the leaves are ready to harvest in as little as six weeks. Cilantro grows quickly and is ideal for herb sellers because of this quick turn-around. Each plant can grow to anywhere between eighteen and twenty-four inches in height. 

Lighting requirements for cilantro are versatile and the plants can grow under standard fluorescent, high output fluorescent or HID grow lights. As with any use of grow lights, you will need to make sure they are placed at the proper distance to provide enough light, yet not burn the leaves. Standard fluorescents can be as close as two to four inches, but you will need to place other fluorescent bulbs at least a foot above the plants. HID (high intensity discharge) grow lights need to be placed even further away. Ideally, they will be two to four feet above the tops of the plants. With HID grow lights, you will also want to have a fan circulate air and cause the plant leaves to move to prevent over-heating. 

Cilantro is a hardy plant that can withstand low temperatures. It needs light but cooler temperatures to remain as cilantro longer. The higher the heat, the quicker this herb flowers. Once this happens, the plant becomes bitter and the flowers need to be left to go to seed, becoming coriander. This plant self-pollinates very well so does not need help. Hydroponic Gardening-Dwarf Lemon Trees

Citrus fruit isn’t just grown in tropical habitats any longer. The newer varieties of “dwarf” fruit trees make them ideal for home and greenhouse growth. No hydroponic garden is complete without at least one dwarf lemon tree, or another dwarf citrus. In spite of being tropic in origin, dwarf lemon trees do not need to be kept in extremely high temperatures. They do need a great deal of light. Drip irrigation hydroponic systems are great for lemon trees. The method of starting your tree will determine whether or not it bears fruit, and even then it will take much longer than most crops.

The greenhouse temperature that is ideal for dwarf lemon trees is between fifty-five and sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit. People turning the heat up, thinking tropic equaled hot have lost many trees. Your dwarf lemon trees do not need a great deal of heat, but they thrive on light, at least sixteen full hours of full-spectrum light is required daily during the growing stage. When it is time for the tree to bloom, reduce the light to an even twelve hours on/twelve hours off to help facilitate the process. Lemon trees need an acidic environment for optimum growth. It is best to visit a hydroponic supply place for a pre-formulated hydroponic nutrient solution. Having the correct proportion of nutrients is essential for your lemon tree. The roots of your lemon tree need to be allowed to dry out between feedings. For this reason, you need to implement a system of drip irrigation that allows you to provide nutrition on a regular schedule, rather than continuously. Many lights used in hydroponic gardening come with a fan system meant for air-cooling already incorporated in their design. If you are using a lighting system that does not come with such fans, it is advisable to set up some fans to help keep the air around the plants circulating and cooler. One powerful enough to cause the plants to move slightly is preferable, as this will also help prevent light landing only on one spot of the plant leaves, causing them to burn.

Hydroponic Gardening - Herbs

One of the most common crops found grown in hydroponic gardens are herbs. This is often the first choice of beginner hydroponic gardeners because, with the exception of lavender and rosemary, herbs are easy to grow if they are germinated and spaced in the proper manner, given proper nutrition at an acceptable rate and kept at an ideal temperature. Temperature and humidity need to be carefully monitored in the hydroponic garden. This is where having a greenhouse is most beneficial. Daytime temperatures should never be above 85 degrees Fahrenheit and the ideal temperature is between 65 and 70. Night temperatures should be ten degrees lower than day temperatures, putting them between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Herbs grow best in cooler environments. Keeping the humidity around forty-five percent is ideal, although it can range between forty and fifty percent without damaging the air circulation the herbs require.

Hydroponic Gardening - HID lighting

Hydroponic gardeners often find it necessary to supplement the available light in their growing area. This is especially true when the growing area is inside the home. Greenhouses offer more light, but this is not always enough to produce healthy fruits, vegetables or flowers. Grow lights take care of this need for added light. It can be difficult for hydroponic gardeners to decide between the many options available in the way of grow lights. Let’s explore HID lights here and see what they have to offer. 

The letters HID stands for “high intensity discharge”. These lights operate with a properly matched transformer, capacitor and lamp, which consist of an inner arc tube possessing a chemical mixture. Working together, these elements help provide a very long-lasting grow light for any hydroponic garden. There are two kinds of HID lights that I’d like to talk about today. These are sodium and metal halide. These two offer different benefits to the hydroponic gardener. 

Metal halide HID lights emit a wider spectrum of light and include more of the blue and violet rays needed by plants that do not get enough sunlight. These lights are most useful during the vegetative stage of growth. Plants grown under metal halide HID lights tend to grow shorter and stockier, this makes for a stronger plant. Metal halide lights are also used more frequently in foliage-only growing. An added advantage of the wider light spectrum is that gardeners growing crops such as flowers are more likely to use metal halide lights because the resulting colors of the flowers appear more natural in the less harsh light. 

Sodium HID lights emit more red, orange and yellow rays, which, when used alone can cause plants to grow tall and spindly. These lights are used mainly when there is enough natural sunlight present to produce the necessary blue and violet rays needed by plants. Many hydroponic gardeners do prefer sodium lamps to metal halide because sodium lights are more energy efficient and often last longer. 

Many growers use Metal Halide (MH) for vegetative growth, and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) for budding and flowering. Only rich growers can afford to run the two systems with their own shades and ballasts, independently. Most growers use conversion bulbs, which very conveniently use the corresponding system’s fixtures. So if you have a Metal Halide system, use it for vegging, then put in HPS conversion bulbs into the same system, for flowering. 

What often works best in regards to healthier fruits, vegetables and flowers is to use some combination of metal halide and sodium HID lights. The combination provides adequate amounts of both red and blue spectrum colors, both of which are needed for healthy plant growth. Using a combination of the two will provide your hydroponic garden with the best that both have to over. This will translate into healthier plants and a more productive growing season. 

Lights alone won’t guarantee bumper crops, but work in conjunction with factors such as temperature and nutrition. I am a hydro grower and distributor of LED lighting for commercial, residential and hydo. They have a variety of applications and incredibly energy efficient. They can hang w flourescent lighting all day long, with considerably less heat. It's a win-win all the way around
