Studying for a Career in Interior Design
The complete study in interior design education can be split into 3 main parts as is done in many schools and universities, with each part having its own merit and professional qualification: they are as follows:
- Diploma in interior design and decoration
- HND interior design
- BA interior design
1. Diploma in Interior Design & Decoration
This first part, the Diploma in interior design and decoration, has study duration of 18 months if you enrol as a distance learning student.
It is generally completed within 12 months, but this will depend on the available time you may have to study, especially if you have a full time job, raising a family, or caring for someone.
Obtaining the diploma is a great way to get introduced professionally into the exciting industry of interior design. In this course you will focus mainly on residential decoration and designs.
2. HND Interior Design
The second part is the HND course in interior design. This can be pursued immediately on completion of the Diploma course or at a later date.
The course duration is 2 years of university, or 60 semester credits.
In the pursuit of furthering your education, after you may have completed the HND course, you will be required to complete a final major project which will form your final grade.
These projects are a culmination of all your course studies including everything that you will have learned.
3. Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design
BA Interior Design is the third part and can only be pursued on successful completion of the HND course in interior design.
In most colleges that offer distance learning classes, it may be divided into modules that will cover topics such as:
- CAD(computer aided designs)
- Final Major Project
By studying approximately 25 hours a week, this course can be completed within 12 months, and that means allowing roughly 10 hours a week consistently.
. . . And after this course, there is the MA Interior Design, for those who wish to pursue the advanced study of the course.
Interior Design Education as an Online Student
As an off campus or online student, you can study at a time and a place that is suitable to your lifestyle, leaving you free to meet your family and work commitments whilst studying for your chosen profession.
This means you can study and earn a degree from any location anywhere in the world.
Tutors will regularly submit additional tutorial literature to students for them to download from their respective universities and academy's websites, and most times, the required support with manuals will be shipped to you.
Furthering Your Design Education Helps You Build On Your Creative Skills
All in all, the 3 interior design study programs can be successfully completed within 3 years if, and only if you can be diligently dedicated to consistently finding time to study, that means a minimum of 10 hrs a week if you are a distance learning student.
In the final major project, you will learn to build on your prior knowledge and design skills, including those gained from the Diploma and HND courses. You will then be able to pursue a specialist area of interior design, of your choice.
Your final project is a great way of entering the industry as a professional, where you will be expected to work independently and autonomously within the interior design and building industry.
