CRYPTIC CROSSWORDS BOOK OF KNOWLEDGE LESSON # 14 DETOURS

LESSON # 14 DETOURS

He’ll jump at the chance to fight. [12]

When you come across a clue like this a BOXER may come to mind or a TROUBLEMAKER but the real person who will jump at the chance to fight is a PARATROOPER who naturally jumps from a plane into the thick of the action.

The writer leads you on a detour to confuse your thinking. The wording suggests a scenario far removed from the direction that is intended.

Another example… This is not right [5]

Several words may come to mind except that which is the correct answer.

You may think LEFT as being not right or maybe UNJUST. Imagine your surprise when you find out that the correct answer is ERROR. Of course error is not right, but it is the right answer.

It helps always to look at the number of letters required for the answer. All crossword clues have this number at the end of each clue.

It’s the broad element of the cryptic spectrum that makes it such an enjoyable pastime.

While it appears very difficult to most people because of all the different elements it is an occupation easily learned through progression. The availability of the answers the day following a newspaper’s issue is the key to knowledge. Every time you see an answer to a clue that you previously struggled with a new mental door opens up in your brain. If at the beginning your daily efforts result in finding only a word here and there you can be sure as you progress and read the answers every day it won’t be too long before you amaze your friends and relatives with your ability.
