Herpes is not always related to sexual contact
If a viral culture taken at a clinic from an active herpes lesion is positive for herpes simplex, then this makes the diagnosis.
As a child you probably had Chicken Pox (a herpes virus) which leaves you with the herpes varicella virus (a carrier), the virus can mutates to become herpes simplex HSV1 the familiar cold sore or HSV2 genital lesion.
Herpes can be contracted through sexual activity or close, skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. You can get the herpes virus by engaging in: vaginal sex, anal sex, oral sex and mutual masturbation.
It also has been suggested that transmission comes through contact with door handles, particularly those in hospitals and public toilets, paper money, hair-dressers scissors, clippers, combs and brushes. In fact any surface that's been touched by infected persons.
