NFL Passing Yardage Leaders By Year—1990s
When you think of 1990s quarterbacks, guys like Brett Favre, John Elway, Warren Moon and Jim Kelly come to mind. But not all of them ever led the NFL in passing yardage, and there are a few others who did lead in that category a few times who may surprise you. Here is a complete list of those quarterbacks and what they accomplished:
1999-Steve Beuerlein, Carolina Panthers (4436)
He was pretty much a career backup until he was put into action in Carolina later in his career, and in 1999 at age 34, Steve Beuerlein led the NFL in passing yards with 4436. Beuerlein completed 343 of 571 pass attempts for the 4436 yards with 36 touchdowns (also a career high) and just 15 interceptions.
1998-Brett Favre, Green Bay Packers (4212)
Green Bay QB Brett Favre has led the NFL in TD passes four times, and also led the league in passing yardage twice in the ‘90s. In 1998, Favre completed 347 of 551 passes for a league-leading 4212 yards and 31 TD passes to 23 interceptions. His 63.0 completion percentage also led the NFL.
1997-Jeff George, Oakland Raiders (3917)
A journeyman quarterback who had a career high passing yardage total of 4143 in 1995 but was overshadowed by Brett Favre, Jeff George threw for an NFL-leading 3917 yards while with the Raiders in 1997. That season, George completed 290 of 521 passes for the 3917 yards with 29 touchdowns and just 9 interceptions.
1996-Mark Brunell, Jacksonville Jaguars (4367)
Lefty Mark Brunell became an instant starter for the expansion Jaguars in 1995, and in 1996 led the NFL with 4367 passing yards. Brunell completed 353 of 557 passes for the 4367 yards with 19 TDs, but also had 20 interceptions.
1995-Brett Favre, Green Bay Packers (4413)
Brett Favre had a remarkable year in 1995, beginning a stretch of three straight seasons that he led the NFL in passing TDs. This was also the first of Favre's two times leading the NFL in passing yards, with 4413 on 359 of 570 attempts. He also had 38 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions.
1994-Drew Bledsoe, New England Patriots (4555)
Way before Tom Brady replaced him, Drew Bledsoe had some stellar seasons as the starting QB of the Patriots. In 1994 at the age of 22, Bledsoe completed 400 of 691 passes for a career high and NFL-leading 4555 yards, with 25 touchdown passes and 27 interceptions.
1993-John Elway, Denver Broncos (4030)
With the Hall of Fame career that Broncos' quarterback John Elway had, he only led the NFL in passing yards one time, in 1993. That season, Elway completed 348 of 551 passes for 4030 yards (a career high), with 25 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions.
1992-Dan Marino, Miami Dolphins (4116)
Dan Marino was another quarterback with a long, steady career. During his years in the NFL, Marino led the league five times in passing yards. 1992 was the last of those five times, as he passed for 4116 yards on 330 of 554 attempts, with 24 TDs and 16 interceptions.
1991-Warren Moon, Houston Oilers (4690)
Warren Moon had some great years in the CFL before coming over to the NFL and putting up huge numbers there as well. In 1991, Moon led the NFL in passing yards for the second consecutive season with 4690, one more yard than he tallied in 1990. Moon completed 404 of 655 passes for the 4690 yards with 23 TDs and 21 interceptions.
1990-Warren Moon, Houston Oilers (4689)
In 1990, Warren Moon completed 362 of 584 pass attempts for a league-leading 4689 yards. He also led the NFL with 33 touchdown passes, with just 13 interceptions.
