South Beach Diet Phase 1 at Red Robin
Red Robin is billed as "America's Gourmet Burgers & Spirits," so if you are not following a diet plan and like burgers, this is the place for you. But if you are on Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet, temptation may poke at you. But that doesn't mean you have to give in to temptation. In fact, there are a few great options on Red Robin's menu if you are on Phase 1*. Below is a sampling of suggestions:
It isn't just a problem with Red Robin. It's a problem with almost any chain restaurant, and that is the fact that everything on the appetizer portion of the menu is full of carbs, fat, or both-meaning, deep-fried everything. So just skip this part or have a small side salad here.
Fajita Fiesta Pollo Salad-Juicy grilled chicken breast is served on top of salad greens with pepper-jack and cheddar cheeses, red and green peppers, corn, onions, black beans and tortilla strips. It's served with a creamy salsa-ranch dressing, which you should ask for on the side. Also, ask for them to omit the corn and tortilla strips, which are both no-no's on almost any phase of South Beach.
Cobb Salad-Crisp greens are topped with grilled chicken breast, bacon, hard-boiled egg, avocado, black olives, tomatoes and crumbled blue cheese. It's served with your choice of dressing, so order a low-carb variety like ranch or blue cheese on the side.
Burger ‘N Greens-Sounds like this one was made with Phase 1 in mind. A burger (with melted swiss cheese) sits on top of a garden salad. The salad consists of lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, red peppers, sautéed onions and mushrooms, and toasted sesame seeds. It's served with your choice of dressing, so again ask for a low-carb variety on the side.
A side salad or side Caesar salad is also available.
Carnitas Fajitas-Just like in a Mexican restaurant, it's slow-roasted pulled pork with peppers and onions (also available with chicken). This is served with tortillas, salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Ask for them not to bring the tortillas, but enjoy all of the other toppings in moderation.
Ensenada Chicken Platter-Two grilled chicken breasts are cooked with a zesty Mexican seasoning, and served with two sauces-salsa and creamy lime.
You best choices are water, Diet Coke, Minute Maid Light beverage, unsweetened iced tea, or coffee.
If you've read these hubs before, you certainly know the drill. Skip the high-fat, high-sugar dessert offered, and instead have a cup of coffee. Then eat your ricotta crème or sugar-free gelatin when you get home.
(*Editor's note-we didn't ask if the burgers can be ordered without the bun, but even so we don't think that Red Robin uses the leanest ground beef that South Beach recommends for its burgers. If we find this to be to the contrary, we'll edit accordingly.)

I've had a ton of great feedback on the Applebee's and Outback Steakhouse hubs on this topic so far, so I'm going to keep doing more. This next hub will focus on a sample menu from Chili's Restaurants. As a rule,...
