Standard Poodles are the Best Dogs I have Ever Had

Most often, when i tell someone that I have 2 standard poodles, they look at me curiously as their mind forms an image of a dog whose torso is shaven and has marshmallow looking patches of fur running down each of it's legs. A lot of my friends questioned why I would even consider owning dogs that look and act prissy enough to be called "un canine". Their misconceptions are cleared up however, the moment they spend ten minutes with my over sized balls of fluff.

The breed of a poodle originates from the Portuguese water dog. This breed was a sport dog who existed along Portugal's coast to hunt for fish and retrieve tackle or nets. Poodles, looking very similar, also have natural athletic tendencies, love to run and hunt, and at times, incessantly bark to no end. their coat is very curly and dense, and they do not shed ( which is great for people with pet allergies).

I have both a girl and a boy who are aged four years apart. They both are black, have dark brown eyes, and weigh between 50 and 55 pounds. The male, Nova, is the most athletic dog I have ever owned. He spends hours frolicking in the backyard, digging trenches, rolling in smells he finds attractive, and (every so often) catching little animals. My female dog, Betsy Ross (born on the 4th of July), is the most caring and sensitive dog I know. She will follow me around the house no matter what room I may be in. Even though poodles have been traditionally known to be aloof, Betsy is a lap dog that is 10 sizes too big, and will climb on top of me where ever i sit down. Also, she actually babysits my 18 month old nephew when he is over. She is always by his side, retreives toys for him, and lets him grab onto her fur.

On top of being sweet dogs, I am amazed every day by the intelletual prowess that both of them possess. on top of being easily trainable, they have an extensive human vocabulary. In the morning, Betsy opens the handle to my door, and hops up on my bed to give me my morning kisses. When it is hot out, Nova pulls the head of the hose out into the yard and begs to be sprinkled with it. When we have suitcases out, ready to be packed, they both hide in their cages because they know they are going to the dog sitters house. When I left for college, Betsy would mope in my room, and be lathargic until i came back on the weekend to visit her. Mentally, i feel a great connection to both of them, and treat them more like humans than animals. When I look into their eyes, I see the love and passion that they have for life.

Nova and Betsy are the dogs that I have grown up with, and are the dogs that will remain in my heart forever when they are gone. They have shown me to respect them as a breed and as companions. They have truly enriched every single day of my life.

Well, their fur just keeps on growing. poodles and other dogs that are hypoallergenic definitely do require more brushing, and professional grooming. We take our poodles to get bathes and groomed every 2 to 3 months.

The above pictures of my dogs were taken a few days before they went to get groomed, so the pictures show them at their shaggiest time.

My golden retriever sadie just passed away a few days ago due to cancer. She was the sweetest dog and i really miss her. But i'm looking at buying another dog and i'm not sure if i want another golden because they're so prone to cancer and i don't want to go through that again. Are standard poodles a very uptight breed (in general)?

Hi Emory, sorry to hear about your loss. I had a retriever/shepherd mix that died of cancer at 7 - heartbreaking! :( I now have 2 male standard poodles and I can say that standards are great! I don't find them uptight in any way. They are both neutered males, and total goofballs--lots of fun, happy and playful, but equally willing to be mellow and nap. My 2nd guy was a rescue, so he's a little bit shy, but he's coming out of his shell with help of my older dog. Check out Petfinder and I'll bet you'll find quite a few poodles looking for a home.

They are the best! I'm a single guy, so I get made fun of quite often for owning a poodle, but when my friends meet him they change their minds, heh. I'll never own another breed now. Intelligent, gentle, and athletic. He's by my side 24 hrs a day.

The women at the dog park just love us now, heh.

I have to say that the standard poodle is so underrated and stereotyped. When my mom passed away 1 1/2 years ago I happened to have a friend who had one puppy left. I asked what it was and She just said poodle. The stereo types came into my head and I passed on the opportunity. She was on a mission from God to let me have the puppy so I went and played with her female standard poodle and I was sold. Lucy is the ABSOLUTE BEST DOG I HAVE EVER HAD! It's sad that people dismiss these dogs, as I can definitly see them complying to almost any lifestyle. I personally will never have a different breed of dog.

standard poodles are soooo smart my standard poodle sasha COULD go loose in the house for all day and night without an accident! of course i always let her out but im just saying that's how easy it was to house break her and she learns tricks sooo easy! i taught her to roll over easily in 3 days!!! and she does it perfect! she also sits stays lays and balances treats on her nose and shes sooo funny and sweet! she is entertaining too!

she loves to roll around in the leaves and go on walks and go swimming and gets along with all our other dogs plus their hair is sooooo soft but NEVER shed a hair!

POODLES ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST DOG BREED EVER!!!!!!!

As a poodle owner I completely agree with your assessment. Once you fall in love with poodle they will forever steal your heart! There intelligence never ceases to amaze and their loving personalities win you over every time.

Very sweet, loving, smart, playful and sensitive. Fantastic companion dogs that love to please and have a personality and brain of their own. They learn quickly and will understand some human language without training. Have had poodles in my family since I was a boy - we had other dogs that we loved too but the poodles truly stand out from the rest. Don't let the grooming scare you off - keep them in a simple puppy cut and brush them weekly and keep their ears clean. They will need a trim every 2 months as their hair never stops growing.

I've had/been close to many dogs in my lifetime. I grew up in a dog loving family, and married a dog lover! Among all the dogs I've had or been close to (labs, airdales, great pryanees, dalmations, coon hounds, corgis, shelties, bassetts, schnauzers, yorkies, and chihuahuas-whew!), I can honestly that the standard poodle we have now is the best dog I've ever had. She is so perceptive I swear she understands every word I say (if she doesn't, she sure acts like it)! And what a sense of humor she has! I love her goofiness. My husband says he will never get another breed of dog but the standard poodle.

We have had two standard poodles (both males) and will never have anything else for a dog. In fact, we are in the process of adopting another standard poodle puppy. Standard Poodles are second on the list of least likely to bite dogs. They love everyone!! They are very smart, very special dogs BUT THEY CAN NOT BE JUST PUT IN A KENNEL OR KEPT OUTSIDE. They are people dogs!! They must be around their owners at all times. These dogs learn things very quickly and will know what you are spelling, especially if it is for a walk. They love exercise and are the perfect walking companion. Only buy from a reputable breeder as there are some genetic problems that can be avoided by proper breeding. All in all, if you want a lifetime devoted friend that will love you and do anything you want to teach it, then a standard poodle is for you. You WILL NEVER REGRET YOUR CHOICE.

betsy ross and nova are amazing. As a new poodle owner, I would love to meet those dogs! My standard red poodle, Rimsky-Korsokov is 2 and he is the best companion I could imagine. Never owned another dog but now can't conceive of any other breed in our home. Rimsky is gentle, kind, sensitive, and a cuddle hoard, but always is he dignified. He has amazing manners but is generous with his affection to dogs and people, always strikes the right chord. And athletic beyond belief in a family of athletes! If Rimsky, Nova and BRare representatives of this breed, I vote for a poodle nation

Once you go poodle you will never go back. My mini-poodle, Jack, is the smartest dog I have ever owned. So intelligent and perceptive. The poodle is a master at training themselves and their owners. They are, hands down, the best dog ever. Over my 60+ years, I've lived with all kinds of dogs; purebreds, mutts, big and small dogs. None compared to the poodle in intelligence or temperament. Awesome dog.
