Stimulus Checks - Tax Rebate Schedule - Tax Refund Checks 2008

Bush: Tax rebate checks are on the way

The tax rebate stimulus checks are coming ahead of schedule -- as early as Monday.

The federal government had said the stimulus checks would begin going out at the beginning of May, but President George W. Bush said today that the tax rebate schedule was being moved.

"Starting Monday, the effects of the stimulus will begin to reach millions of households across our country," Bush said today.

If you selected to have your stimulus check direct deposited, it could arrive as early as Monday, four days sooner than previously announced. Paper tax rebate checks now are scheduled to be mailed on May 9, which is a week earlier than expected.

The money will help Americans as they cope with rising prices for gasoline and good.

The rebates will be up to $600 for an individual, $1,200 for a couple. About 130 million households are expected to get them -- but people must file a tax return for their 2007 income to be eligible for a rebate check.

The IRS now says all checks for those who filed tax returns on time are scheduled to be deposited or mailed by July 11.

---

CNN Money reports that the federal government will begin sending stimulus checks on Monday--five days earlier than planned.

The Treasury department says the earlier tax rebate checks are due to a new program that updates their records faster. The rebates go to folks who have filed their 2007 return--and taxpayers who opt for direct deposit will get their check faster than those who use mail.

Who gets the stimulus check and how much?

The program calls for rebates of up to $600 for single filers making less than $75,000. Couples making less than $150,000 would receive rebates of up to $1,200. In addition, parents would receive $300 rebates per child. Tax filers who do not owe income taxes but have at least $3,000 in income would get a $300 rebate.

Taxpayers will get their tax rebates in the order of the last two digits of their social security number.

---

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush says the economy is weakening but he hopes tax rebates that start going out Monday will help shore things up.

Bush says the rebates will help people cope with higher gasoline and food prices.

The rebates range from $300 to $1,200 and are the centerpiece of the government's $168 billion economic stimulus package, enacted in February. Roughly 130 million households are expected to get them. The Bush administration is hoping people will spend the money, bolstering the economy.

The IRS says direct deposits of rebates will begin Monday, with paper checks to follow.

"This money is going to help Americans offset the high prices we're seeing at the gas pump, at the grocery store, and will also give our economy a boost to help us pull out of this economic slowdown," Bush said Friday in brief remarks at the White House.

Bush estimated that next week nearly 7.7 million Americans will receive their tax rebates by direct deposit. The IRS will start mailing checks on May 9, the president said.

The IRS says all checks for those who filed tax returns on time are scheduled to be deposited or mailed by July 11.

The Bush administration is hoping that people will spend the money, helping to bolster the economy.

"We're a little bit ahead of schedule, so we will start right on Monday with direct deposits," Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson told Reuters in an interview Thursday.

Previously, the Treasury had planned to begin tax rebate payments in early May as part of a $152 billion stimulus plan passed in February. The checks had to wait until after the IRS processed the bulk of tax returns filed before April 15.

But Paulson noted that the economy is facing stiff headwinds from high fuel prices and a protracted housing downturn, so the administration wants to rush funds to consumers to keep the economy from deteriorating further.

"Close to 8 million people will get their stimulus payments next week," he said.

"You add that to the incentives for business to make investments, we think that will give the economy a boost, upwards of 500,000 jobs," Paulson added.

He said the economy had slowed down significantly, noting that "last quarter was a tough quarter," with continued downside risks from housing and from financial market turmoil.

Isn't this so kind of Bush to "give" us our money to try to assist with the economy! Did it ever occur to him that $4.00 for a gallon of gas is seriously affecting the U.S.! Just my opinion, lol.

Thank's Mr. Bush for being so kind..(SARCASISM!)

Bonnie 8 years ago

What does the President have to do with it?? HELLO!! He has limited control over the gas prices! Why don't you ask the suppliers! Better yet, take a good look around the world; were in recession!!

nick 8 years ago

yes. it is really funny that bush is able to "give" us money while we are in a recession. and yes, i do believe the government, including bush, has some control over our insane gas prices, bonnie. are you still a bush supporter? did you know he makes money in the oil industry? do you not find it strange that our gas prices change daily, sometimes as much as ten cents? that is nuts! HELLO

Ah... the infamous 'hush money' racket.

There are some really great ways to stimulate the economy... which could a really good thing. And this 'deal' isn't one of them.

Here's hoping everyone will have the good sense to simply apply their 'windfall' to some current debt while keeping an eagle-eye out for the shenanegins that are really going on in that 'white' house!

I guess the we (the U.S.) just borrowed another 70 billion from China to pay for the stimulus program- at least this time it's going into the citizens' wallets.

Seth 8 years ago

Is this taxable income or an advance on our returns for next year? I heard both...

Phyllis 8 years ago

What a crock, we borrow from China to buy gas that the money goes to another country. Are stupid or what.

Chris 8 years ago

Most of you do not understand what Bush HAS done for us as americans. Since he has been in office he has sent this type of stimulus check twice. Also, he proposed that americans with children get a bonus when filing taxes. I dont believe he has anything to do with gas prices. Sure, he may make money from it but that is American Oil. Since 95% of our oil comes from South Africa or the middel east, I cant see him the changing prices. Since most of you hate him so much and have nothing nice to say, why dont you make a statement and refuse to cash your rebate check. Yeah right. You'll like him well enough while you stand in line at the bank waiting to cash it wont you??

KATHY 8 years ago

I AGREE WITH CHRIS. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE REASON YOU ARE GETTING A A REFUDE CHECK THEN DOOOO NOTTTT CASH IT. I BELIEVE BUSH HAS DONE A WONDERFUL JOB. IF YOU ARE NOT A PERSON THAT KEEPS UP WITH THE GOV. BUSH CAN NOT GO TO WAR ON HIS OWN. PEOPLE VOTE ON THIS. IF IT WAS JUST BUSH THEN WE WOULD NOT BE LIVING FREE WE WOULD HAVE TO ANSWER TO THE GOV. FOR EVERYTHING. SO BEFORE WE PASS JUDGEMENT WE NEED TO TRY TO IMAGINE WALKING IN THOSE SHOES FOR A DAY.

Taxes can be so confusing! I am just glad to know I will at least get something back. Though I am guessing what I owe will be taken out of the check. Any way, I appreciate the detailed information.

Happy Granny 8 years ago

William - you might only be getting the $600. If you did not owe any taxes for 2007, due to your earnings being too low - you will only get back $600 per couple or $300 each. That is our situation too.

Everybody.... The purpose of a 'stimulus' is to give us money in our pockets to buy stuff. That causes manufacturers to have to make more stuff. They pay their workers from the profits and then the workers buy stuff... and more stuff is made, more people are paid - and on and on.

If you want to blame somebody for the recession - blame the banks that loaned 100% of the value of houses to people who could not pay any increase in interest rates. As the interest rate increased, the people defaulted, leaving home values to go down, thus people are upside down in their mortgages (owe more than the house is now worth).

I hope you all get your check and thank President Bush. He has done more to keep us safe and secure than many other presidents. If you want to blame government for high gas prices and recession ... blame Congress and the Senate. THEY don't seem to accomplish anything! They should all be fired!

Just my opinion. ;)

blackcoffe75 8 years ago

this is for chris and kathy. to be such supporters of bush you sure are stupid. yeah, we're gonna cash those checks because we deserve to. it doesn't matter that he has given us this twice, because we should have been getting them every year. and yes, he does get money from the gas prices. why do you think they have been increasing steadily since he has taken office. and maybe you didn't know that our country is at war for weapons of mass destruction that were never found. so many americans have lost their lives for this. is that what you mean when you say what he as done for us as "americans?" oh yeah, kathy, if i had to walk in his shoes, america wouldn't be so ------ up!!! when you run for the presidency, i think you know going in that it won't be a cake walk. he decided to run for office twice, so i think he's a big boy. let him deal with the criticism. can't wait 'til Obama takes office.

Bill 8 years ago

they are giving the money so we returne it by geting $4.00 a galon of gasoline, en they can put more money in ther packets. I have not seen Bush do anything to stop the high cost of gas.

hugsforyou52 8 years ago

Yes, I am looking forward to getting my refund check. After all I do pay taxes and it's my money I'm getting back. Not out of the goodness of Bush's heart,,,,,,

Money is the only weapon of mass destruction that Bush has ever been concerned with and right now he's making sure the american people STAY concerned with it. Of course people who don't support bush are going to cash those checks. Half of us have already forgotten the bad that he uh, never did it appears. Classic Bush, Classic.

Wendy 8 years ago

Our country is in worse shape than it has been in many years. It is tragic to see how expensive gas and food have become. I can't believe that Bush has nothing to do with all of this! He is just another Republican and can' realate to how the Middle Class Americans have to live and survive these days. Every day more people have lost their jobs, homes, and are hardly making enough to pay bills and support their families. I have seen more than enough of him and his big grin. He has ruined this country. It will take a long time to clean up his mess (from the last 8 years). HE is only protecting the oil companies (his friends).

Just Gina 8 years ago

Wow...

REALLY incredible that any of you still support the ways of George W!!!! He has turned this country upside down in the past 8 years!!!! We have lost all respect with other Nations, the economy continues to flounder, oil and gas are the highest ever and the list goes on and on. I am totally proud to be a citizen of this great country, but we do not deserve the repercussions of the choices that he has made for us. Please bring our beloved troops home ASAP!!!

I am STILL waiting for my stimulus check to arrive. Please vote for "change." (and I am not refering to Senator John McCain)

JAMES PAIGE 8 years ago

HOW IS BUSH GIVING US SOMETHING, WHEN ALL THE TIME HE'S FIGURED A WAY TO TAKE IT RIGHT BACK? IF YOU OWE CHILD SUPPORT OR STUDENT LOANS, HE TAKES THE STIMILUS CHECKS RIGHT BACK. I HAD A $430.00 FEDERAL REFUND COMING THIS YEAR AND IT WAS TAKEN FOR MY STUDENT LOAN. NOW THE STIMILUS PAY THAT I AM SUPPOSED TO GET ($600.00) WILL ALSO BE TAKEN. HOW IS THAT HELPING ME? BUSH IS HELPING HIMSELF, TO A TOTAL OF $1030.00.

THIS WHOLE THING IS A BIG JOKE, SO IS BUSH.

Jacke 8 years ago

This whole thing (when if and how you get a check) Still is pointless when you look at the fact that the IRS has been taking our money for years based on the original premise of paying off the dept of the world wars. Now I don't know about you but I would rather be putting better food on the table, nicer clothes on my kids backs, and own a home right now then have someone send me a check that just might, help do one of those things. If we had the money the IRS steals from us on a weekly basis in our pockets we would not need a stimulus check. And do any of you wonder where this money is being cut from, education, health, which one of the programs is losing funding? I can tell you its not coming out of the pockets of the military, the senate or the house.

robert minaker 8 years ago

why dont people get those free checks on ssi we get under paid 637 a month

LEFTY614 7 years ago

I DONT GET THAT EITHER ROBERT MINAKER ,,,I DONT UNDERSTAND THE WAY IT WORKS BUT IDO KNOW ALOT OF PPLZ BEING ON SSI THAT HAS RECIEVED STIMULUS CHECKS 637.00 ISNT MUCH ,AND WITH THE ECONOMY THE WAY IT IS 637 BARLEY COVERS FOR A ROOF OVER THE HEAD,,U EITHER PAY THE RENT AND GO WITH OUT OR ROB FROM PETER TO PAY PAUL

Goldie 7 years ago

I agree Robert since I am on SSI also. It sucks. We got our biggest raise ever as soon as Obama got in office. I do NOT understand why we can't get the stimulus check also. We may not pay income taxes but we still pay taxes any way you look at it. I think we deserve 'THE' check just like everybody else. There is NO difference in us and them except we make a whole lot less more money than anybody else does in this country of ours. Well I don't want to get started, because I will get pis__d off and I will be in a bad mood all day long. The 'OLE' George did do a number on our country, he sure did!! I think we deserve a check just like everybody else, the only thing different with us is alot of us are disabled. Isn't that right? It is with me. That is all I have to say, somebody come back on that one NOW!!!

linda 7 years ago

why are they taxing2008 last years stimulus checks in this year taxes 2009 when most of use need as much money as we can get

Cathy 7 years ago

It is good that obama passed a law that the people that get ssi-ssdi get the 250.00 once a year. It is hard to raise a child on this. That is why the state needs to get off their cheeks and send out those stimulus checks out earlier.

Betty Vallance 7 years ago

My husband and I are 59 years old and we are both retired. We do not collect Social Security yet, so how will we receive our stimulus checks. Maybe in our retirement checks? But we aren't getting Stimulus check notices in the mail like some of our other friends are?

hotrod 7 years ago

i think hes got a big heart but not anuffee money and he whants too get the usa to trust in him .i think hes trying too hard to prove hes trying to be a good presadent for the white houseand for usa

stimulus check 2010 6 years ago

There should be a stimulus check in 2010 similar to how it was in 2009 with those who are retired getting $250 checks. everyone else still has the same benefits carrying over from 2009.
