Stone Mountain Park
Stone Mountain Park is for Families!
If you've seen Mount Rushmore and have the "seen that, done that" attitude but yet were impressed with the magnitude of this memorial, head down south to Georgia and visit Stone Mountain. Located just outside of Atlanta, Stone Mountain has the largest bas-relief carving in the world. Located on the North face of the mountain, the carving is a memorial to the "soldier of the south" and is referred to as the Confederate Memorial Carving. The relief depicts three of the Confederacy's most popular leaders: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis.
The carving began in 1923, however, due to financing problems, the carving was only partially completed by 1928. The relief remained unfinished for about 36 but was finally completed with renewed interest in the mid 1960's.
Stone Mountain is a granite dome monadnock that rises to an elevation of 1,683 feet. Some claim that Stone Mountain is the largest exposed granite exposed in the world. Venturing to the top of the mountain, visitors will enjoy an amazing panoramic view of downtown Atlanta and sometimes, on a clear day, the Appalachian Mountains. At the base of the mountain, visitors will find the Stone Mountain Park, a family oriented theme park that offers rides, games, food and other activities. From the Stone Mountain Park, visitors can take the Skyride to the summit of Stone Mountain, enjoy a leisurely train ride around the base of the mountain on the Scenic Railroad, go for a Mississippi style paddle boat ride on Stone Mountain lake or visit the historic Antebellum Plantation and Farmyard comprised of original plantation buildings dating back to the late 1700's.
If you plan on visiting Stone Mountain Park, here are a few tips to make your visit more enjoyable:
- Plan your visit, if you can during September or October. It's slightly cooler and there aren't as many people.
- A visit closer towards dusk is a wonderful experience. Not only is it cooler but you will be able to enjoy the evening laser show.
- Purchase your tickets ahead of time to save money. Sites like www.TrustedTours.com offers discounts on admission tickets.
- There are plenty of area hotels priced at all levels but if you are more adventurous you might want to take your tent and camping gear. There are plenty of camping spaces available at the park.
