The Cary House-Placerville, CA (Investigation)

Paranormal Investigation of the Cary House, Placerville, CA

by Christine B. and El Dorado Paranormal Investigations

The Cary House on Main Street in Placerville (formerly known as Old Hangtown--for good reason!) has a long history in El Dorado County. It was first built in 1857for William Cary. Horace Greeley delivered an address to the miners from the balcony of the Cary House. In January of 1915 the building was razed to make way for the newer structure. In 1978 Douglas and Peggy Milton restored it to its present grandeur. In February, 2008 El Dorado Paranormal Investigations and the youth paranormal investigation group that I work with visited the antique hotel to discover and document what spirits still walk the hallways.

So lets talk about the Ghosts/Spirits of the Cary House. The most popular and well-known spirit is Stanley. Stan is a former Cary House desk clerk who was stabbed to death when he reportedly made a pass at the wrong woman. Her husband saw them together and killed Stan on the staircase. Stan may be dead, but his impish spirit still likes to pinch young lady’s behinds. One of our young lady investigators had a first hand experience, as she was pinched by an unseen hand while still in the parking lot behind the building before we even entered the hotel.

We photographed several orbs at the hotel. One was in the lobby, another was photographed in the spot where Christine felt a presence at the top of the stairs on the second floor, and a third was photographed on the staircase rising up to the second floor where our Gauss meter read high electromagnetic energy. The Gauss meter was reading high energy levels all over the hotel, but in one particular spot it went off the charts only when pointed in the exact spot where we photographed an orb.

Room 212 is also said to host the spirit of an old horse and wagon operator who died in the room. As soon as we walked into this room we felt a chill. The outside temperature was registering as 62 degrees, the hallway temperatures registered a warm 76-78 degrees, but inside room 212 our laser thermometer marked 56 degrees, but it felt a great deal colder than that to the group. The thermostat on the wall was set at 65 degrees and there had been guests in the room the night before. We did not see any spirit orbs in any of the photographs we took in this room, but there was little doubt to those present that we were not alone!

We also used copper dowsing rods on the second and third floors to attempt to locate spirit activity. At one point the rods pointed directly to a spot where I captured a spirit orb. We did not attempt to communicate with the spirits with this rods, however. That would have been interesting. We also did not get any noticeable EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenia) with our recorder while in the building.

It was an eventful investigation that the team members will long remember. Unfortunately, the photos I took during the investigation were lost when my hard drive failed and it had to be replaced.  You can go to my web site: http//edparanormal.com, go to the "Paranormal Newsletters," and then download the March 2008 issue to see more photos.  The one I included I actaully got from the internet of MY photograph.  Someone else used it in their investigation article.

I've experienced numerous paranormal activities over the years & when I stayed at the Carey House May 2009, I awoke to see man with a long black beard standing over me. I was not afraid & he disappeared before I could wake up my friend.

Wow... there are two famous spirits residing at the Cary House, and one of them is a gambler who was murdered there. It sounds to me that you ran into him! Would you mind if I posted your comments in my May, Paranormal Musings Newsletter? Thanks for taking the time to comment. Happy Hunting.

i am currently staying at the Carey House, in room 211,apparently this is across the hall from room 212 where the horse and carriage man died.... I was just reading about this place because My husband was sort of joking with me and said " I wonder if this place is haunted?" Earlier before we checked in the front desk clerk was kind enough to let us look at two rooms to decide if we wanted to stay here.

When we looked down the long hallway after we climbed the staircase My husband made a reference to this reminding him of the movie " The Shining". It sort of prompted me to look online to see if there were any haunted houses in Placerville, and I found quite a few things about the Carey House where we are staying and It got me a little excited...... I have seen what i think were ghosts twice in my life ...... the room we are staying in I had thought to myself earlier reminded me a lot of my aunt dorothy that passed in Feb of this year, she had an older victorian house in Petaluma CA and that is a house I had seen and heard childeren ghosts in..... I wonder if any of this means anything.... or nothing..... for some reason I feel a little jazzed, If I have a ghost visit me here i would really love to see my aunt again............but I dont have any reason for her to be here since she did die in her own home, she was happy to be home when she passed and she died peacefully ......... I am curious now to see what may or may not be here this visit, we are staying for three days

Last night my kids's grandparents stayed at the Cary house in room 209. Grandpa got his leg grabbed in the middle of the early hours of the morning. After spending most the night listening to someone walking up and down the hallway. It wasn't like a panic walk it was more like a stroll up and down the hallway making sure everything is alright. Thanks cant wait to go back.

We just got back after a really nice time at the Cary House for Valentine's Day. I am not a believer in ghosts per se and figure all the alleged "haunted " homes and businesses are just tourism ploys..(which they are)

However, while sitting in on the bed by myself, it felt as though the mattress was moved as though someone had sat down on it next to me..this happened twice and I was by myself both times..hubby was in the bathroom. I tried to ignored it .What I couldn't ignore though was about an hour later while me and my husband sat on the bed flipping through channels , "something" rapidly patted the pillow behind me and it freaked me out. I looked to see if something had fallen or anything and then asked my husband if he had done something and he looked at me like I was crazy....nothing. I had to sleep with the bathroom light on. Kind of freaked me out ..not sure I would go back to Cary House but the staff were all excellent. Room 209 .

Hi Ann~ Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm quite sure that your unseen visitor was Stanley, as he was quite the lady's man when alive. He was actually murdered by a jealous husband on the stairs of the Cary House. You're not the first, nor will you be the last to experience first-hand. Did you feel someone pinch your bottom? He's famous for doing that as well. :o) It might have been disconcerting for you at the time, but look at the great story you now have to tell! :o)

We just got back from staying at the Cary House. My wife and I had a great time with some of our best friends. I didn't experience anything weird while we were there. I wish we did. But when we got home we were reviewing some of our pictures of the staircase and noticed something. There is an Orb at the bottom of the staircase. I thought is was weird that a cellphone could pick that up. My son enlarged the photo on my wires phone and we freaked out.....it was awsome....there were three orbs and once enlarged....we saw a face very clearly. He has a beard and mustache. I am either seeing things or we really saw a ghost. I will try to get my wife to put the picture on here so u can see for yourself. Truly amazing..........

Hi Jeff~

This doesn't surprise me in the least. Many people get photos of orbs at the Cary House--and I'm sure it was either Stanley, or the gambler who is also a spirit resident of the hotel. I'd love to see your photos. Please send them to me at edparanormal@gmail.com and I'll review them for you. If you wouldn't mind, I'd also love to publish the photo in my next Paranormal Musings Newsletter. Out of all the comments I get on my Hub Page Site, I have gotten the most from people who have visited the Cary House and who have told me about their unexplained experiences there.

Thanks for writing and I hope to see your photos soon.

I have tried at least six or seven times to download the article on the Cary House, but it won't download at all!!

My son is coming to my place in a few days and I thought we could visit the house. But as I said above, it won't download or save the article!!

Sincerely,

Carol

My friend and I just booked a night in room 212 for late April. We were told that this room was the most active, and even the gentleman who we spoke with over the phone who helped us with our reservation told us that room 212 was their most "popular" room. We've always been fascinated with all kinds of supernatural accounts, and would love to have a first hand experience.

We're going to set up two video cameras which will be running all night long, and we will also be taking lots of pictures via digital cameras as well as polaroids. I'm starting to get a little nervous, and don't know what to expect...

Adam, don't be nervous. The spirits at the Cary House are playful and not negative in any way. Stanley might pinch you're wife's butt, so be prepared for that, and you might hear someone call out your name... but other than that, you'll be fine. Please let me know what you get in way of unexplained images. If you have a digital recorder, bring that along too. You might get some EVPs. :o) Good luck, and have fun!

Adam 5 years ago

Adam here, just got back from my stay at the Cary House. We stayed in room 212. At first we were a little let down, because we did not feel or sense any spirits or catch anything in our digital cameras or video camcorders.

However, at around 2:30am to about 4:00am we immediately started to feel a presence in the room. My friend and I had turned off all the lights and I was sitting on the edge of the bed with my legs crossed, and he was sitting in the rocking chair about 5 feet away from me. After speaking out loud and attempting to invite the spirits to connect with us, I was suddenly hit with a VERY strong feeling of being watched (as if someone was RIGHT behind me on the bed) followed by very intense goosebumps which crawled on my arms and all the way up my spine and towards the back of my head. I told my friend to quickly take a picture of me. In the photo, you can see many orbs surrounding my entire body. Large and small ones.

From that moment on, we could feel various hot spots all through out the room. I've never felt the hairs on my body rise so strongly before, it was quite amazing. The chills that we felt were unlike anything I've ever experienced. It was NOT typical of how you'd imagine normal chills. Imagine the strongest goosebumps you've ever had, and multiply that by 10. It's really something that you can't explain or that people won't understand unless they've experienced it for themselves.

Another encounter we had was actually within minutes upon our check-in. We had just received our room keys, used the elevator to get to our room (2nd floor), dropped off some of our bags, got in the elevator to go back downstairs, and grabbed our remaining bags from the car. On our way back up, we took the elevator again. Immediately after we got in and closed the door (without touching a single button) it took us straight to the top floor. We quickly stepped out to see if someone had pressed the button to call the elevator, and there was NO ONE in sight. My friend quickly became VERY light headed and very weak. This was odd, because I felt perfectly fine. We had to quickly get back on the elevator and head back down because my friend really did not feel well. The second we left that floor, and exited the elevator he felt fine.

I'm VERY glad my friend and I decided to stay at the Cary House. It was exciting and the staff was very hospitable. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is seeking any paranormal adventure, or just wants a fun getaway in a lovely, historic town.

Adam~Thanks so much for taking the time to report back to us. Sounds as though you had an exciting adventure. Placerville (Old Hangtown) is one of the most haunted areas in California. There are spirits in just about every building on Main Street and many more in the general area. I lived in that area for about 6 years and enjoyed every minute of it.

Thanks again.

Christine

DD 5 years ago

in that pic, it is a dust orb........Orbs are hard determine sometimes......but it is very clearly a dust orb...However, when I did visit the Hotel, there was a spirit of a man on the back stairwell and a spirit of a lady on second floor...on the 4th floor in the hall of rooms 403 and 404...we smelled perfume, we asked the clerk about it and he said several guests have reported the smell of perfume on several occasions...we do plan on going on an investigation now that we scouted it....beautiful place.

I don't agree about the orb, DD. I've been a professional photographer for over 20 years and I know dust when I see it, and I know spirit energy when I see it, as I've been investigating the paranormal for over 40 years. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, however. The place is haunted at any event, so the point it mute, right? :o)

DD 5 years ago

Your right, my opinion......I have also been in this profession for over 26 years.........I can give you a link to a certified, took classes, well known all over the U.S. in fact that is all they do, he is Dr. Dave and his wife Sharon...They prob been doing this both our years put together lol he is really good..he has validated on a lot of things I wasn't sure about..I'm also a sensitive, yes I can actually say there are some things happening in that place....Like I said, I have seen a man on the back stairwell, and a woman on the second floor, the perfume however, has investigating coming due to someone was in that room.....I really don't like dealing with orbs because they are difficult to determine...but I have learned Orbs are not see through, they are solid and bright..and can come in colors...again, my opinion and confirmation from Dr. Dave...I can give you the site and you can email him the pic for his opinion.......I could be wrong........I hope you don't take offense to my post, was trying to help....Let me know if you would like his link, like I said things I am unable to validate, he helps me with it.....We sure learn something new even after all these years..but Im curious so let me know k

DD 5 years ago

Dr. Dave is a DD, PhD. Over 60 , old, writes books, researches, answers a lot of questions from different groups...studies thousands of photos or more from different groups for opinions or answers...My group was on a radio show with him and him and his wife are really wonderful....its there if ya interested in checking his site out

Sorry DD, but exactly the opposite is true. Being a professional photographer I know for a fact that dust is not transparent, it is a solid white dot on a photo. A spirit orb has a noticeable nucleus and has a rainbow edge energy border. And I can tell where to take the photo because I can feel the spirit presence about 75% of the time. That is all substantiating evidence. This is an argument that can never be settled. However. one of my team members here in Ohio is a medium. She point blank asked her spirit guide what an orb is and he responded: "What we know as an orb, is it others energy?" -- "Yes, either loved ones that passed on or pets. The bigger the closer related." If there are a great deal of orbs in a shot, it is probably dust or moisture in the air. But if we are investigating in a very dust area and we get only a few orbs out of 100+ photos, and they have the rainbow energy edge, it's very likely that they are spirit manifestations. (p.s. I've written books too--that doesn't mean I'm always right about everything I write about. It just reflects my opinion based on my knowledge and experience. )

We stayed at the Carey house just last weekend and I have a history of seeing and feeling ghosts. Sure enough, we were wine tasting next door and Emile came to me as a ghost and said I had to go and talk to him right that minute. He led me to the second story at the top of the stair case and was in my face as a watery figure very hyper and upset. I then walked around a little more to find Lucy in the elevator. Someone shook our bed that night but I hide like a child when that happens! It's very tiring for me to communicate with ghosts but I thought I'd better go see what Emile wants. So the next morning I went to his spot and he appeared in color and chased me as if to pull me back. Smallish, travel clothes from 1800's and a hat. I told him he had passed away and go towards the light but to no avail. Loads of fun, I'd do it again. There's someone defineately in the servants quarters on the lower floor by the breakfast room too!

It sounds as though you had quite an adventure! That's often the case at the Cary House.... did you get pinched in the butt? Stanley does that all the time! :o) Thanks so much, Paula, for sharing your experiences with my readers! :o)

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Cary House on Feb. 1, 2014 in the infamous Room#212! Never saw anything but heard all kinds of sounds all night long! It was soooo cool! We didn't even ask to be put in this room. We arrived to find flowers in the room but they were for another couple staying at the hotel. The staff offered to move us but since we already had our luggage in the room we decided to stay put. Had no idea of all the activity we would be part of that night. We will for sure being making a return trip to the Cary Hotel and will probably ask for Room#212 again! We also had an amazing time walking the downtown area and checking out all the shops!

Hi Christine B! So I'm wondering if the noises we heard all during the night were actually the ghosts? We heard what sounded like the toilet paper roll spinning at least a dozen times during the night as well as a clanking sound. Never actually saw anything and wished I had taken a picture while we were in the room to see if any Orbs appeared. We can't wait to go back for another visit. Thanks!

I'm sure they were. When we investigated that room we found that it was at least 10 degrees colder than it was in the hallway, or in any of the other rooms we visited. You should have taken photos, because I'm sure you would have captured some of the paranormal activity present there, none of which is negative, by the way. :o)

Dee H 2 years ago

I agree...I never felt any negative energy while we were there. And I agree, the room was a lot colder than the hall way. I could kick myself for not taking pictures...what was I thinking! LOL

We are staying in the Cary house tonight. We located the ghost. I hope something happened:)
