The Miracle of Grape Seeds

Grape Seed Extract

I remember when most variety of grapes had seeds. As the agro business has evolved, more and more grapes are offered in seedless form. However, we may well be missing a very important nutrition which is an integral part of the grape seeds. Fortunately, one can obtain grape seed extract in many capsule form from health stores.

As we age our bodies produce more and more free radicals. Excessive free radicals in the body have been linked to a large number of human diseases including premature aging and cancer (see http://hubpages.com/hub/Live_Longer_with_Antioxidents).

Grape seed is considered as a Super Anti-oxident. It has been shown to be as much as 50 times more potent than vitamins E and C. It contains as much as 90-95% PCO (Procyanidolic Oligomers), which is a plant based anti-oxident. PCOs stop the release of certain enzymes which damage the tissue surrounding the capillary walls. They are instrumental in fighting vascular disease, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, eye disease and heart disease.

So, next time you are out grocery shopping, look for grapes with seeds. Or, alternatively, supplement your diet with grape seed extract and enjoy a healthier and more youthful life.

Can you get the same nutritional value from grape seeds by cooking with grapeseed oil? I see it for sale and it apparently has a high smoke point.

Yes, grape seed oil contains almost 70% of Omega-6 EFA and is an excellent antioxident.

It is best used in cold foods such as salads because EFA's are heat sensitive. So, even though the smoke point is high for cooking purposes, the EFA's loose their potency at elevated temperatures. In fact, it would be best to store grape seed oil at lower temperatures.
