Well known adages such as look before you leap and fools rush in where angels fear to tread warn against impulsive, rash behaviour. That seems pretty sensible. On the other hand, you've got the Latin poet Horace urging us 'carpe diem', to seize the day. That sounds like pretty good advice too.
