I think that MH can have a significant impact on the work environment-not just for the individual themselves but also for the employer and coworkers. I feel that an employer has a responsibility to provide a supportive and enriching environment for their employees. It helps with over all work productivity, attitude and success of the business. I understand that many work environments may be difficult to display that support however an individual knows if their employer really is invested in them or not. Its not rocket science! Everyone wants to feel that they matter and that includes in the work place. We all face ups and downs in our lives with family, friends and just life circumstance. This directly affects our MH, attitude and job performance. We all try to say that it "doesn't affect our work" but it absolutely does! As an employer myself for 10 years, I faced many challenges and struggles with employees presenting with MH issues. Some were up front apon hiring and stating that their MH was being managed however many concealed information until it was directly affecting their ability to perform basic job responsibilities. I have nothing against employing an individual with controled or managed MH issues provided the employee is honest and forthcoming. I'm sure many employers would not give the same respect and would probably discriminate rather than deal with any inconveniences. I think the most difficult struggle is when it is directly obvious that an individual in the work force has MH issues, however they are ignorant to any idea or mention of it. I believe that most anyone with motivation can be successful if their are not outside influences taking away from their ability, such as MH. As a coworker, it can be increasingly aggrivating as they may feel they are picking up the slack from others or are assuming more responsibilities in place of others who are less compitent to handle it. I clearly understand those frustrations, however my thought it that often workers are doing those things, not just for the few MH issues but primarily for the lazy!
