I was in the military for 20 years and traveled to places I've never heard of....and a few I had! I've visited most of Asia and a great deal of Europe, Australia and 46 of the 50 states.
One of the most pleasant vacation places I've stayed at was on the island of Boracay in the Philippines. There's only two ways to get to the island: boat or small plane. The sands there are exquisite: soft, powdery and white. The water is so clear that you think the bottom is only a few feet down and you're in 30 or more! Scuba diving and skin diving are great. It's truly an island paradise!
Less exotic, perhaps, was the winter I spent north of the Arctic Circle in Norway the year before the Olympics. We lived in a tent that had a space heater the size of a jet engine. The little town we were near was so different than anything I'd imagined. There was an entire store devoted just to condoms...not that I needed any. The restaurants featured seal and moose; as well as salmon and other local delicacies.
