Commercial Truck Insurance

Updated on March 5, 2010

The business of driving a large big rig truck can be a dangerous fun, and a lonely one.  Being out on the highway for days and days on end can sometime be unnerving.  Because the trucks are so large and heavy, having insurance in place in case an accident happens is definitely important.  You can't just get any regular type of insurance because the trucks are bigger, heavier, and can cause a lot of damage.  That is why commercial truck insurance is important to have if you are driving a a commercial truck.

Whether you are an independent owner/operator, or maybe you own a trucking company, you definitely need to take a serious look at commercial trucking insurance before operating.  I am going to give you the ins and outs of this type of insurance so that you can find what suits your needs or your company's needs the best when it comes to getting a commercial truck insured.

Who Needs Commercial Trucks Insurance

Even if you don't own a big rig, if you are using a commercial truck in any commercial capacity, then you're going to need insurance for it.  Depending on what type of truck you have, you may be able to get it insured with your regular auto insurance company, but not always.  if that is the case, then you'll definitely want to take a look online to find and compare rates from different companies.  If you are driving a big rig, usually you'll need to find a specialized trucking insurance company in order to get commercial truck insurance quotes.

Lower Commercial Truck Insurance Rates?

Yes, it is definitely possible to get your insurance rates for commercial trucks lower, but this won't work for everyone.  The only real way to get a lower rate on your commercial truck insurance is to either shop around, or only use the truck off-road.  If you work in the agricultural business, and will only be using your truck off of the main roads and highways, then you'll be able to get a lot cheaper amount because of the lower risk involved for the insurance company.  Since there are still dangers working off-road such a hitting a rock, or a hole, or even if a tree falls and hits the truck, insurance is deifnitely important, but you can definitely get it at a lower rate.

Types of Commercial Trucks

There are many different types of commercial trucks that may be in need of commercial trucks insurance, and here are some of them:

  • Semi's/Big rigs
  • Dump trucks
  • Straight trucks
  • Tractor-trailers
  • Some pickup trucks
  • Tow trucks
  • and more....

What does Commercial Trucking Insurance Cover?

When looking at the coverage you'll need, you'll notice that often times commercial insurance for trucks will cover the same things that your regular personal auto insurance covers.  Comprehensive collision, general liability, and even insurance for when an uninsured motorist may hit you with their car.

There are also more specialized types depending on what you will be doing with the truck, what kind of cargo you'll be carrying, and other such special circumstances.
