Decorating with Garage Sale Finds

Explore for Creative Decor

A simple and creative way to keep your decorating dollars on a budget is to go to garage sales, flea markets and rummage sales in your area. Even though garage sales, flea markets and the like are sometimes more popular in the summer months compared to other times, like in the middle of winter, you can still find great décor and unusual items anytime of year. When you are able to make it to any of these popular selling places, they are a few key items to look for.

Furniture is truly one of the best things you can look for at garage sales. Last year's design might just fit in with your décor. You can always have a sofa recovered, or simply add slip covers for an inexpensive option. Tables and chairs can be repaired, sanded, painted or be covered with stenciling for a new look. Before you buy, test legs to check for stability on tables and chairs, and look at the base of sofas and chairs beneath the cushions to check the condition of any springs that may be in upholstered furniture.

Look for creative ways to add extra storage in your home with cheap garage sale finds. For very little money, you can pick up a few baskets, bins, buckets, shelving and other odds and ends to solve your storage problems. Many times, items can be easily repainted or refinished to create a new look.

Garage sales are a great place to look for antiques. Generally speaking, antiques will be priced substantially less at a garage sale or flea market when compared to a retail antique store. You may also be able to negotiate a better price on an awesome antique at a local garage sale or flea market. Look for lamps, tables, chairs and even antique beds to complete your décor.

Wall art can be another great find at garage sales or flea markets. Look for old tapestries, or even old gilded frames with no actual paintings in them, and refurbish them to make them your own. Lightweight rugs are another great option for wall décor along with metal art you can even repurpose stuff like metal grates or gates to create unusual art and wall décor.

Regardless of your taste, décor or budget, garage sales, flea markets and rummage sales offer the perfect opportunity to not only save money, but create a unique and personal decorating style for your home.

There are so many great deals at Garage sales. We sold a few of our furnishings pretty cheaply at our garage sale.
