Earnings Comparison: Hubpages vs. Squidoo

Summary

With the implosion going on at Squidoo and the seemingly random locking of lenses, I am migrating my content elsewhere. Here is the first of such: A comparison of my earnings at Hubpages and Squidoo.

Squidoo and HubPages

Welcome to my hub on my Squidoo and Hubpages earnings. Basically, this is a comparison to see which format - although they are alike in many ways - allows you to make the most money. Needless to say, it won't be an apples-to-apples comparison, but it might provide some food for thought as to which is the better venue for your online efforts. Moreover, this will be a work-in-progress, as I update the numbers on a monthly basis.

That said, let's get this match underway and see who's going to end up as champ!

Just FYI: Please bear in mind that this is merely my earnings from Squidoo and Hubpages. To see my overall earnings please visit the Passive Pursuit of Income Blog.

October 2011 Earnings

To be frank, at this juncture I'm really new to hubs and lenses, but I'm looking to kick-start my online earnings and passive income, so I signed up to both Squidoo and and Hubpages on the same day towards the end of the month. October earnings were as follows:

Squidoo.com
$0.00

Hubpages.com
Ditto..

Seeing as how I only had a few days as a Hubber and Lensmaster, I'm not surprised that my earnings amount to a big, fat goose egg in both venues. (Hmmm... There should be a term for someone who is both a Hubber and a Lensmaster. Maybe A Hubmaster? HubLenser? LensHubber?)

November 2011 Earnings

I really didn't do much on either Hubpages or Squidoo. I created exactly one hub and one lens, and my earnings clearly reflected my efforts - both creative and marketing.

Squidoo
$0.00

Hubpages
$0.01 (Look out, Bill Gates!)

December 2011 earnings

As with November, I really didn't do much on either Squidoo or Hubpages: no new hubs or lenses, although I did expand the content of what I already had up.

Squidoo
Zip. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Nil. Naught. Nothing. Nothingness. Nonexistent. A nullity. Having no weight. Having no worth. Having no manifestation. Having no form. Having no substance. Something of no value, consequence or size. Something that does not exist. The absence of all magnitude or quantity.

Hubpages
$0.19 (Now I can get that operation I need...)

At this point, with a solid 20 cents, Hubpages is the breakaway leader. Of course, it's only been two months, so the race hasn't yet gone to the swiftest. (Not to mention the fact that it's just $0.19 to $0.00.)

January 2012 Earnings

I finally decided to give some much-needed love and attention to Squidoo and Hubpages by building more hubs and lenses. The results - while not mindblowing - do indeed highlight the potantial for earning online income.

Squidoo
$0.00

Hubpages
$2.66

I created about 10 new lenses, some of which even clawed their way intoTier 3. (Woo-hoo!!!) One of them - my lens on Generating Passive Income - even battled its way into Tier 2 for a short time. (Lots of visits and sterling comments, but few "Likes." What gives?) Also, I still don't seem to know enough about Squidoo payouts; apparently my lenses need to be around for a month before they qualify for any moolah. That being the case, the earliest I can look for any greenbacks is a month away. (On a side note, I also zoomed through 40+ levels in less than a month to get to level 50. I actually didn't even notice anything about leveling up until I saw that I was on level 9 in early January.)

With respect to Hubpages, I've added about 12 new hubs. (Several of these are part of a "Hubchallenge" I took on to build 30 hubs in 30 days, but to keep things honest I've also been trying to simultaneously build on Squidoo.) Once I became somewhat active on the site, I saw my earnings start to increase. Obviously the income didn't shoot through the roof, but I can see enough positive things here to get me excited.

February 2012 Earnings

I'm obviously tardy in updating my February 2012 results, but it's not wholly my fault. You see, while I recognize that there's a 2-month lag between earning on Squidoo and getting paid, I guess I hadn't considered that the lag also applies the reporting of earnings. (In other words, I thought I'd get a note that said something like, "You earned 3 cents in February, you bum; you'll get paid in April. Now make some more lenses!") In peeking at other lenses to see how earnings were reported, it seems that everyone else relays what they receive on payday as that month's earnings, even though it was actually earned two months earlier. That being the case, I will keep in line with what seems to be the standard convention for reporting Squidoo earnings.

Squidoo
$0.00

Hubpages
$8.15

To be frank, I actually had a sale in February, so I was really looking forward to putting Squidoo on the board in terms of having some earnings to report. Still, I'm a very patient person, and I have no doubt that as long as I keep creating quality lenses it will be reflected eventually in my Squidoo earnings.

Regarding Hubpages, I was able to complete the 30-hub-in-30-days challenge, and it has had a wonderful effect on earnings. I know many of you will laugh at my measly 8 bucks for the month, but it's triple what I got in January. If I could triple those earnings every month, I'd retire by the end of the year.

March 2012 Earnings

Woo-hoo!!! I finally hit pay dirt on Squidoo, as evidenced below:

Squidoo
$2.35

Hubpages
$61.42

Of course the Squidoo numbers aren't much, but by now it's probably clear that I not only get excited by actual numbers, but also by future potential. In truth, I've got less than 6 months on the site (and I've really only been active since January), so I'm pleased with what I've generated.

As to Hubpages, I feel blessed to have seen my earnings increase from roughly $8 to over $61 in a one-month span. Of course, it's impossible to have that kind of month-over-month growth for a sustained period of time, but I believe I can still achieve significant revenue growth on a monthly basis.

April 2012 earnings

I had a second month with consecutive earnings on Squidoo ("I'm king of the world!"), as shown:

Squidoo
$1.18

Hubpages
$44.49

My Squidoo numbers are a retreat from last month, but I'm happy to be consistently earning on the site. (Yes, I'm claiming consistency on the flimsy basis of 2 consecutive months of earnings.) Now I've just got to find a way to get my ranking up. With that in mind, I should acknowledge the fact that 've been fortunate enough to get several lenses liked by Giant Squids and Blessed by Squid Angels, so thanks to all for your support!

I also saw a decline in my HubPages earnings, but considering that it was still more than 5 times as much as I received 2 months ago, I'm still somewhat giddy. Like any income stream, the numbers will fluctuate; my hope, of course, is that - over time - the earnings will increase in the aggregate.

New Metric for Squidoo vs. HubPages

It occurred to me as I was running the numbers for this month that - outside of a complete fluke - I will probably never have the exact same number of lenses and hubs. That being the case, it seemed that a better measure for the two sites might not be the total income produced each month, but rather, the average income produced by each lens or hub.

Bearing that in mind, I decided to divide my Squidoo earnings by the number of lenses I have, and the HubPages earnings by the number of hubs. The results are as follows for April 2012:

Average Squidoo Earnings Per Lens
$1.18 divided by 36 featured lenses = 3.28¢ per lens (approximately)

Average Hubpages Earnings Per Hub
$44.49 divided by 52 active hubs = 85.5¢ per hub (approximately)

May 2012 Earnings

My May earnings are as follows:

Squidoo
$1.82

Hubpages
$43.78

I had to go out of town a couple of times in May, so I didn't have as much time to devote to lens/hub creation and promotion. Still, my Squidoo numbers stepped up a bit from April, so I'm pleased with the growth. I just need to make sure I keep it going

My HubPages earnings are fairly consistent with the previous month, so I'm happy with the results. The HubPages Ad Program is really great. It's a little different from Squidoo in that you get paid based on page views (plus the usual: Amazon, eBay, etc.), but - as I always say - you want to have diversity with respect to the source and types of income you bring in.

Average Squidoo Earnings Per Lens
$1.82 divided by 37 featured lenses = 4.92¢ per lens (approximately)

Average Hubpages Earnings Per Hub
$43.78 divided by 67 active hubs = 65.3¢ per hub (approximately)

Hubpages
Squidoo
Total
$205.85
$10.48

June 2012 Earnings

My June earnings are as follows:

Squidoo
$5.13

Hubpages
$45.15

Percentage-wise, my Squidoo numbers made impressive gains. I still have a ways to go before I get to where I want to be, but things are certainly looking up.

Again, my HubPages earnings stayed somewhat consistent, so I'm pleased with the results I've been getting. .

Average Squidoo Earnings Per Lens
$5.13 divided by 37 featured lenses = 13.86¢ per lens (approximately)

Average Hubpages Earnings Per Hub
$45.15 divided by 81 active hubs = 55.74¢ per hub (approximately)

I was disappointed when I read this today. I'd seen it was updated yet you didn't bother to include recent numbers. This post is outdated by at least a year.

My apologies. As I stated at the beginning of the hub, this is content that I migrated over from Squidoo, so it's "new" from a Hubpages standpoint but I don't know that I've done anything for it to garner an "updated" designation.

Regardless, you are correct in that I haven't updated the info - or any of the hubs I have that are similar to this one - in quite some time. Hmmm...maybe it's time to do a follow up.

That's fair. I wouldn't have said anything but this is an article I've tracked for a while. I'd hoped when I saw an update that it was because you'd included recent information. I look forward to seeing any info you can provide and will keep up with it in the future.

This is a really funny hub. Well written. Could have been a complete wasted read, but you kept me entertained. Thanks. Voted up.

Out of curiosity, what did you make in September?

Hypersapien profile image

Hypersapien 3 years ago Author

Less than $1 on Squidoo and close to $5 on Hubpages. But I should preface that by saying that I really haven't done anything on either site - including promotion - in something like a year. (Frankly speaking, I've been putting my time and energy into some other projects that I felt had more potential.)

Thanks. Is this something online?

If you mean the other projects, then yes they are online.

This is the first straight-forward concise SQ-HP earnings comparison I've read! Very entertaining and helpful to those torn between the two sites. I've started with HP but like you, initially didn't put much effort into it. After 4 years I only published about 30 hubs. Only some of them are actually making any money. The average monthly pay-off (with some light updating when needed, but not much else) is about $5. Not much, I know.

So I was thinking about starting with Squidoo. Now I think I just need to write more hubs, really get disciplined about it! Thanks for the info, I enjoyed reading it, voted up :-)

No problem. I'm glad the info helps, but I'm rarely on HP any more. Like I said above, I've had a few other projects that are making much more $$$, so I'm putting more effort in those directions.

So I guess ultimately HP didn't have that potential you were looking for. A lot of people say that the only smart thing to do is write for your own blog/website but it involves massive promotion efforts. Is that what you're doing?

Hypersapien profile image

HP did have potential - I've actually made as much as $20 in a single day on here before. But with Google's constant algorithm changes, you'd work like crazy to build up traffic only to find it decimated practically overnight. But it was the same (actually worse) on Squidoo and elsewhere.

Finally, with all the writing I was doing between HP, Squidoo, and other places (not to mention researching topics), I just decided that I would probably do better to simply follow an earlier dream and self-publish a book. I was blessed in that my publishing efforts did well right out the gate, and I've never looked back.

Wow congratulations!! This sounds amazing. Where can I find your book?

Thanks for your interest. I actually have about a half-dozen books out at this point, but I'm a little nervous about tearing down the walls between my two worlds. That said, my books are on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and more.
