How to make a living as an Ebay Seller. With in depth buying and selling methods!

Updated on July 6, 2012

Intro

Today's hub is going to teach you how to make a living off buying and selling on Ebay.

A little about me. I have been selling on Ebay for about 6 years, and have made decent money while selling. I use Ebay as a way to generate extra income on top of my current job income. One thing I have noticed is that it is extremely easy for one to make money while selling on Ebay. So when you read this guide you should keep in mind that you will need a little start up cash, BUT will have no problem making money if you follow my tips and guide. In the end you will have no problem making money, but also there is a lot of buying, and reselling items when season is right. So let me get started.

First Strategy

Okay, So the first strategy is buying and selling. The trick I will first teach you is off season buying, and selling in season.
With the method you basically are going to buy items when it is off season for them, and then hold them for when the season is right. You are mainly playing off the main cold, and warm seasons, and you obviously will typically sit on items for a couple of months until it is time to resell them. The first example I will use is swim suits. Swim suits obviously have little use in December, and the similar months around that. Unless you live in Florida ( which I do) there is still not a big market for bathing/swim suits, and summer clothing in the winter. Therefore when it comes around the time right after Christmas(you don't want to buy before as some people buy as gifts) you can find bathing suits more than half off. Then simply hold them until April/May and you will be selling them for about 80% of retail value, and should make about 1.5 times your investment. Keep in mind that brand names are better, than just cheap bathing suits.

My next example is winter clothing. This is much better return on investment. The example I will use here is Fur Hoodies, or Fur hooded sweatshirts. Once May/April comes around anyone who has a growing child, growing teen usually will sell their Fur Hoodie knowing they will need to buy the next size in the fall. Also worth noting that in recent years these have become extremely popular, and very sought out. So your goal is that you will buy the fur hoodies depending on the brand for around 20-40 dollars a piece in the summer months. The BEST time to sell these is right after Thanksgiving when everyone starts Christmas shopping, and depending on the amount you spent you can usually double your investment on each piece. The bigger brands that typically tend to sell easier are Fox (Sasquatch style), Hollister, American Eagle, Abercrombie, Aeropostale, and similar brands. But that does not mean you will not make some profit off any buy and resell, but those brands are biggest returns on investment. Usually the best sizes to go after are Mens Small, or Medium, as many people outgrow these sizes after the season, or shooting after kids sizes. These will allow easy flip, and sellers of these are not looking for big $$$ during that off season. Please note that right now I am including Ebay items on the right that will show fur hoodies currently on Ebay, and in the fall I will switch this to things that are worth buying at that time. As of now it is still a good time to continue buying fur hoodies though.

Next strategy

So your next strategy also refers to buying and reselling but this time you do not have to sit on your items for time (unless you buy the items above).

This method deals with yard sales, estate sales, moving sales, and garage sales. Essentially all the same idea, and all involve people getting rid of their items in hopes to make extra income. This is where you make your way in and take advantage. They need the money, and you will be able to buy items and flip them on Ebay and make a profit. Keep in mind when these sales come along, usually the people are looking to make some quick money therefore sell items for much less than their true value. This is where you try to also make a special deal lower than their price in order to maximize your profits when you sell on Ebay.

Items that you should look for is for starters.. Electronics. Electronics are a GREAT way for you to make a profit as the name brands are highly sought after on Ebay. Also look for DVD lots, or Blu Ray discs. Both of those are great ways for you to make profit if you get for the right price. Overall electronics are a great way for you to make money while selling on Ebay.

The next category you should look for is antiques, and collectibles. I put these together because they are very often very similar in value, and cross categorize. When you go to any sale collectibles and antiques are very hard to price. And while some may be over valued typically people looking to get rid of their items will undersell an item ESPECIALLY at estate sales, where items were their parents. This is a great way for you to buy very cheap items and make a profit on Ebay. You should research these items slightly before buying to make sure you are buying a valuable item but overall you usually cannot go wrong with this category.

This last category I will talk about here I will also talk about below, but basically its jewelry. As far as jewelry goes at these sales, usually people know what they may have, but will sell their items cheap for the cash. This is a great way for you to make some extra money, or to invest in jewelry and hope the price does climb.

So that is my portion on Sales to buy items. Keep in mind that this is a great place to pick items up very cheap, and resell them on Ebay to make extra profit.

Jewelry

So as I said above, I would make it to the jewelry portion below. This is where I will show you how to make money with jewelry.

Before I talk about buying gold, let me just say that to sell your gold or precious metals on Ebay is smarter than any other method. pawn shops give you about 60% of value, cash for gold deals give about 70% of value BUT on Ebay, time and time again you will get 100% of the value of your gold. It makes very little sense to sell your items to shops, or send it in, when you can make MUCH more by selling your items on Ebay.

With that being said, this is why buying gold is a GREAT way for you to make money. If you offer 80% value for gold and silver, you will be offering MORE than anyone else does, and still making 20% profit on your investment. Not to mention that you will sometimes make better deals by people selling their precious metals for much less than they are worth.

Also you can buy the precious metals and continue to sit on the items until the price goes up to what you would like to sell your items for. With prices at a medium right now, I have been sitting on my items hoping the price would slightly spike before I sell mine, but with them here I am able to also buy at a much lower price.

Precious metals is a great way for you to continue making a living off buying and selling. At any given time you will make back everything you put in, if not plus some. So you should not worry when investing in precious metals unless you are buying when prices spike for retail price. Also leave yourself some room to make profit when you are buying precious metals.

Conclusion

So here is a basic edition of my guide to make a living by being an ebay seller. Hopefully you will be able to make good money as I have in the past, and not have to much trouble making your profits. Remember this guide is not 100% guaranteed but I am showing my methods of making money. Also remember you must invest money to make money with my guide. I do not think you will be disappointed in the long run, and that you can become very successful.

This guide is not completely finished, and I will continue to update as seasons change, and as I find other ways for you to buy and sell on Ebay. As of now the methods above are the best ways, and should allow you to maximize your profits in the long run. Thanks for reading, and please feel free to ask questions, or comment below.
