IRA Investment Options

Updated on November 9, 2010

Retirement Choices at Their Finest

The IRA investment options are retirement plans that can grant you with tax advantages when you retire in the United States. The different types of the Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) give you the capability to choose the best plan that suits your retirement needs. These types of IRAs range from self-provided accounts to employer-provided plans.

IRA Investment Choices

Roth IRA is one of the most recognized retirement plans. This account is made by contributions that are not tax-deductible. Since this plan is composed of after-tax assets, you should note that all transactions and contributions that you’ve completed do not exhibit tax impact. Moreover, withdrawals that you will make with this plan are normally tax-free. The name of this Individual Retirement Account was derived from the late Senator William Roth.

If you have sufficient knowledge about business, you can make a Self-directed IRA that allows you to invest in businesses through your retirement plan. This account gives you the full right to manage your assets through your self-direction and management.

Another type of IRA is called the Traditional IRA. The contributions for this retirement plan are most of the time tax-deductible. To give you more idea about the “tax-deductible” principle, all contributions that you made are added with pre-tax assets. All withdrawals that you will make upon your retirement will be taxed as compensation excluding those withdrawal components that correspond to deducted contributions. There are two kinds of contribution for Traditional IRA; these are non-deductible IRA or deductible IRA.

You may also want to consider IRA Investment Options known as the SIMPLE IRA. Simplified Employee Pension (SIMPLE) is a plan that is almost similar to 401(k) account, wherein both you as an employee and your employer are allowed to make contributions. The contributions for this plan have lesser limits and simpler management that make it less costly than other IRAs. Though, it is considered and named as IRA, it is distinguished as a separate retirement plan.

SEP IRA, is a kind of a retirement account that permits an employer, who most of the time self-employed or owns a small business to apply for retirement contributions for a Traditional Individual Retirement Account. This provision is established in the name of an employee, instead of an account of a pension fund in the name of the company. Learn about self directed SEP IRA for more information.

*Each type of IRA has it's own set of regulations. Make sure you know the current IRA rules before proceeding to investing into any IRA.

Additional IRA Options

The IRA investments have two subtypes of Individual Retirement Accounts. These are identified as Conduit IRA and Rollover IRA, though they are already deemed as obsolete because of the current tax law. Some contributors still have these retirement plans, so they can appropriately check their assets’ source. Another reason of the maintenance of these accounts is that some retirement plans will only approve rollovers from IRAs if they fall under rollover or conduit IRAs.

IRA investment options can be funded through cash or cash equivalents. You may be disqualified to acquire the IRAs’ benefits of a low risk investment if you attempt to transfer any other asset type into the Individual Retirement Account since other kinds of funding are considered as prohibited transactions. You are only allowed to include any type of asset if you want to fund conversions between other retirement plans and IRAS, rollovers and transfers.
