Increase Website Traffic by Posting Links on Reddit -- Part II

Source

© 2012 by Aurelio Locsin.

This continues Part I of Increase Website Traffic by Posting Links on Reddit. Please read that part first or these procedures won’t make sense. This series continues with Lessons of Repentance: Avoiding a Ban from Reddit.

5. Post the link.

Click the Submit a Link button on the left side to post a link, whether it’s to another site or your own. The Submit page appears with the following fields.

  • Title. Your entry must describe the contents of the link. Ideally, this will be the same as the article but you can make this title more descriptive. For example, if the article on Einstein discoveries is called “The Smartest Man in the World,” you might want to put something more informative such as “Albert Einstein, the Smartest Man in the World – What He Discovered.”
  • URL. Copy and paste the web address of the article to avoid typos. You do not get a chance to correct any mistakes after you’ve submitted the link, so double-check that what you put in is correct.
  • Choose a Subreddit. This should already be filled in with the name of the subreddit that you’re in.

Once you’ve filled in the fields, click the Submit button to post your link to the subreddit. The Comment page for your link appears. It will say There doesn’t seem to be anything here because there are no comments yet. Most of the time, you can leave the Comment field blank. But you use this area to enter any explanatory text about your submission. Don't forget to click Save.

6. Check that your submission is accepted by the subreddit.

Make sure that your submission was accepted and not marked as spam. It may take a few minutes for the site to see your contribution and you may need to refresh the page.

  1. Click the title of the subreddit in the upper left corner. The main page of the subreddit appears.
  2. Click the New tab to display the latest submissions. If your link is missing, then continue to the section “If Your Link Is Missing” at the end of these procedures.

7. Check for any comments, if necessary.

Remember that your primary goal is to increase website traffic through your link. If the site has accepted your link, then you are done.

If you care what people say about your link, you can check for comments on your user page. The user page is the first page that appears when you sign in. You can also display this page by clicking your username on the upper left side.

  • If you are not seeing your recent submission, click the Submitted tab and if needed, the word New in the upper left under that tab. Your latest links appear.
  • The number with arrows to the left of your link title is a score that shows how many people rated your contribution positively or negatively. Do not influence this score by clicking it because that counts as a negative vote.
  • The number next to Comment under your linked title shows the number of comments your link has received. You can view and respond to those comments by clicking Comment.
  • Be warned that Reddit comments tend to be overwhelmingly negative, depending on the topic. But since positive or negative postings tend to increase visitors to your site, you do not have to respond to them.

Site Visitors

Depending on your topic and the subreddit you chose, the number of visitors should experience a dramatic surge within the first day of your submitting a link. The number then decreases, sometimes gradually over several days, or just as dramatically by the next day.

If Your Link is Missing

Many subreddits may incorrectly mark your submission as spam because either you don’t have sufficient external link submissions or you’re new. In either case, you can send a message to the moderators asking for clarification.

  1. Copy the exact link you submitted. You can find that link again by clicking your username in the upper right to display your user page. Your link should be listed in the Overview tab, sorted by New. Right-click the link name and click Copy. Then return to the subreddit page by click the Back button of your browser.
  2. Click the Message the Moderators link on the right hand side at the bottom of the page. (This is under the Submit a Link button.) The Send a Message page appears. The To field already contains the moderator address.
  3. Enter a Subject saying that your link is missing. For example, you can type in “Missing Link on Einstein.”
  4. Enter an explanation in the Message field. Ask the moderators why your recently submitted link is missing, and paste the link address that you copied into the message. Otherwise, they have no way of knowing what you’re talking about.
  5. Click the Send button to send the message. If the subreddit has several moderators, you may get a response within hours. Otherwise, it may take several days. Some moderators won’t respond at all or say that they are rejecting your link because it is spam. In those cases, you may want to delete the link from your user page and try another subreddit.

Great know how to do it information on posting links on Reddit. After reading this article, I have submitted my application and posted my first link on the site. Thanks for the useful article. Hope to read some more. Thanks.

Reddit is one of my main sources of traffic... The only problem with Reddit is that the traffic only comes as frequently as you post.

Very true, theglobalistrepor, not just for Reddit but for forum and Facebook postings as well.

After reading this article, I may have to start posting on Reddit again. I'm always on the lookout for more ways to diversify my traffic.

katinaferguson 4 years ago

I posted to reddit, got a bunch of traffic...and a bunch of trolls. I think it would be good to mention that the site if full of them. The crowd on there is rough.

One guy called me a spammer and self-promoter because I posted links (a total of 3 at the time)to articles I wrote. *note* It's a good idea to create a username for reddit that people will not affiliate with your HubPages profile.

This same dude left nasty remarks on all of my submissions.

My 2 cents:

1. Before posting to reddit, make sure your topics are very well written and well researched.

2. People get deeply offended by self-promotion, make sure your username on reddit is something completely different than your HubPages profile name.

3. You're better off not looking at the comment (lol). Sensible people won't say much, but an obtuse person will have much to say. It won't be constructive either.

These were the 2 articles that got the most flack...you guys tell me why anyone would fly off the handle over this kind of material:

http://katinaferguson.hubpages.com/hub/The-Soroban

and this one:

http://katinaferguson.hubpages.com/hub/Why-I-Love-...

The Your Baby Can Read Hub was called "pathetic."

My experience with reddit did inspire another Hub though (lol) "How to deal with an Internet Troll" :D

Let us know how it works out shin_rocka04.

Sorry you had such comments, katina. You're definitely proving I've stated in this hub: Reddit comments tend to be overwhelmingly negative. Thank you for sharing your experiences and for the additional advice.

As long as you're getting the traffic, you don't even ever have to look at the comments.

I'm going to try this out and see how it works, and I know I won't be reading comments. Thanks for letting us know this valuable information!

Thanks Alecia -- start slow and let us know how it goes. While Reddit does pose risks, the fact that I've gotten two 4,000 hit days from it is worth the risk.

@alocsin Yeah...didn't want people skimming over that part of your hub(lol), that was a vital piece of information :)

But in all my ranting about the Reddit crowd, I forgot to praise you for this excellent hub. Thanks for posting and taking time out to share valuable information.

Voted up and useful :)

Yes, Reddit comments are usually negative. The one that I got thousands of hits on was about education, so there were some great informational discussions between people, and I did join in. I added my hub, "Advice to the New Bride," and the gals were brutal. LOL Said it sounded like the author was coming from the 1950s era. I took it with a grain of salt and thought, "Hmmm... you will find out some day." LOL All Reddit hubs voted up and useful!! :-)

Although this is a great article series I have to say my experience with Reddit in the past has not been great. As others have said it is a hive of trolls, second to "4chan" in my opinion. So although you get traffic much of it will be negative, I am giving it a go with a hub right now to see how it goes. Great work with the hubs, alocsin.

alocsin profile image

Thanks for the follow, sholland. But no argument from me on the negativity of Reddit. But you can always ignore them if the visits keep coming. Thanks you both for stopping by.

I have changed my mind completely with Reddit and Hubs, the results now speak for themselves. Although it was always a proven good way I was unsure but since trying it for a week I have found this to be one of the best "instant" ways to get traffic, compared to keywords and so on. Great article series alocsin!

If I have youtube videos in my hub articles, will this cause reddit to not post my submissions? I posted a hub with three youtube videos in it and I have not seen it post to the reddit entrepreneur section yet.

alocsin profile image

alocsin 4 years ago from Orange County, CA Author

I haven't posted any youtube type articles, so can't answer that. But have you tried messaging the moderators about it? A lot of the times, the spam filter may catch articles automatically, even if they're not spam.

Alocsin, I wanted to update you on my progress with reddit. I joined a day or so ago and my first submission was never posted. I messaged the moderators with no response. I then answered a couple of questions to other members accounts. Today, I successfully posted one of my links. This time, I didn't put the title of my hub in the title section of the link submission. Instead, I put a couple of sentenses about my hub and asked for some feedback on my ideas. When I submitted the link, it instantly posted to the entrepreneur section. I don't know if the spam technology didn't like my title the first time or if I just needed to prove that I was willing to post to some of the discussion threads first. Not sure. Anyway, after all that, I successfully posted a link to one of my hubs. I will keep you updated on my traffic progress in the future. Thanks for the tips.

Reading all of your hubs on reddit before trying it. Now I need to read why you were banned. Question...one of the comments on this hub advised not to use your same user name as on HubPages. Did you use a different one? Just curious. Thanks again for the advice. Up and useful votes.

alocsin profile image

alocsin 4 years ago from Orange County, CA Author

Yes, it's different, and you'll read why in the Ban article. Glad you're taking a methodical approach to this.

alocsin profile image

alocsin 4 years ago from Orange County, CA Author

That's exciting to hear, Brandon. Thanks for the update and do keep us posted. I've managed to post my titles with no problems but it's important that your title be descriptive enough for the the general redditer to understand. If not, sentences are the way to go, as you've discovered.

Brandon Spaulding profile image

Brandon Spaulding 4 years ago from Yahoo, Contributor

Alocsin, here is the original link title I posted on reddit that did not get posted: The Entrepreneurial Director Leadership Style-Descriptions and Characteristics of these leaders. High profile leader examples include Gene Simmons, Donald Trump, and Governor Chris Christie However, I was able to post a couple of other links. I have made sure to comment a couple of times to other peoples posts before posting a link. I did get 27 views from reddit to my two hub titles that did post to reddit. While this is not 3000 views, it is something. Just think if you posted links to similar sites to reddit. Just posting to another 100 web sites would potentially increase traffic by 3000 views. I found some web sites last night that list links to other websites that are similar to reddit. Here is a link to a site that lists 500 or so similar websites to reddit: http://www.moreofit.com/similar-to/www.reddit.com/... I will be signing up and posting to these websites in an effort to encourage traffic to my web hubs. This strategy is potentially worth thousands of daily increased views and hundreds of dollars in earnings. I will also be writing a hub about these sites and the strategy for using them to increase traffic. Thanks for your hubs on reddit.

Brandon Spaulding profile image

Brandon Spaulding 4 years ago from Yahoo, Contributor

Alocsin, I am now up to 40 views from my two hub pages link posts on reddit. I posted yesterday around 10pm. Imagine how many views I could have if I found another 100 sites to duplicate the same sort of posts on. This would potentially be 4000 views. As i mentioned, the moreofit website lists 500 similar web sites to reddit. If I were to successfully duplicate the same posts on those website, my potential views in one day could reach 20,000 views in one day. This would take some work but I believe it could be done. It would depend on how quickly I could post those links to each site. That would be the challenge.

alocsin profile image

alocsin 4 years ago from Orange County, CA Author

Thanks Brandon for offering your own experiences here in Comments. They will be useful for others taking the plunge. How many members does that subreddit have? The more, the better your chances of visitors.

The demographics of Reddit are mostly young men so I try to post articles that would appeal to guys in their 20's and 30's. You write a lot of technical things that would appeal to them. I doubt my recipes or gardening would be good ones to post there.

On another note, I've had great luck with RedGage. We have to try different things and see what works for our writing style.
