The Secret of the Law of Attraction

What is the Law of Attraction?

If you haven't seen The Secret yet, you might be wondering what I'm talking about, so before we get to far into things, here's a brief explanation of the Law of Attraction.

In a nutshell, the Law of Attraction states that the things that you give your energy and focus to are the things that will be attracted into your life. So if your mind feeds negative thoughts with attention, you'll continue to draw negative experiences into your life - lack, poor health, bad relationships, discontent, etc.

On the other hand, if you only feed positive thoughts your attention, then positive things will be attracted to your life instead -- money, love, spiritual well-being, contentedness. The sky is the limit and it isn't all about wealth and getting rich, though that is where many people begin when they first start working with the Law of Attraction deliberately.

In other words, you get what you think about, even if that's not what you want. The Law of Attraction doesn't recognize the word "No" or "Don't". It only responds to the focus of your attention.

Do You Know the Secret?

If you've already had the opportunity to see "The Secret" movie, or you've read the book, you probably realize that The Secret is little more than an introduction to the Law of Attraction. The movie provides the key to open the door, but now that it's swung wide, you'll want to step inside and learn how to put the Law of Attraction into practice.

Fortunately, The Secret isn't entirely a secret. The founders of the New Thought Movement have been practicing and writing about the Law of Attraction since the late 19th century, a movement very much alive today in the churches of Religious Science, Divine Science and Unity. In fact, Rhonda Byrne was inspired to create her documentary after having read The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles.

So now that you've been introduced to the secret of the Law of Attraction, where do you go from here? Well, step inside because I'm about to introduce you to some of the practical steps you can take to practice the Law of Attraction in your own life. This is the first in a series of hubs I will be putting together on the Law of Attraction.

Guess what? You're using the Law of Attraction Right Now

Whether you realize it or not, the Law of Attraction is already working actively in your life right at this moment. The events, opportunities and experiences you are experiencing today were set into motion by the thoughts and actions you've already taken.

The Secret is really about realizing that this law is already active in your life and deciding that you want to deliberately attract things into your life consciously rather than leaving it to the vagaries of your subconscious. This is going to take some effort on your part and if you are trapped in a negative spiral, it is probably going to take a lot of effort.

One of the main differences between the writers of the early 20th century and those who write about the Law of Attraction today is the emphasis on just how much work you need to put into consciously working the Law of Attraction. The new breed of writers suggest that its easy and that merely thinking about what you want for 20 minutes a day and putting together a vision board or two will get you on the road.

The early New Thought writers, on the other hand, suggest that you need to do a lot of work. In the words of Wallace Wattles, echoing a common phrase in Christian mysticism, you need to "pray without ceasing". In my opinion, this the correct course to take. Put a lot of work into the Law of Attraction and reap the large rewards. Or put a little work into it and watch the rewards trickle into your life. It's your decision.

The Science of Getting Rich

The Science of Getting Rich is a book written by New Thought philosopher, Wallace Wattle, in 1910. Since this book is the basis for the movie, The Secret, I think it makes a lot of sense to begin your practice of the Law of Attraction here. It offers practical guidance on using the law of attraction deliberately specifically to improve your financial well-being.

Whle I am outlining some of the ideas from the book in this hub, I think it is important that you also get and read the book. And then read it again.

Now onto Wattle's practical guidelines.

  1. Believe there is One Substance from which all things proceed.
  2. Believe that this Substance gives you everything you desire.

Whether you call this substance God -- or the Universe or The Supply, or It -- does not ultimately matter, but you must believe and have faith that this is the truth, otherwise doubt will infect your thoughts.

The universe desires you to have everything you want to have. Nature is friendly to your plans. Everything is naturally for you. Make up your mind that this is true. It is essential, however that your purpose should harmonize with the purpose that is in All.

By harmony, Wattles means that that which you seek cannot take away from someone else. One of the essential ideas behind the Law of Attraction is that resources are infinite and available to all, therefore we are to create the things we want to attract into our lives, rather than compete for what already exists.

Show Gratitude Always

Relate yourself to God (or the Universe) by a feeling of deep and profound gratitude. Many who start to try to work with the Law of Attraction ultimately fail because they cut themselves off from the source of their prosperity as soon as they start to achieve some of the things they desire. You must never cut yourself off from the Source.

So do what you need to do to stay focused on Gratitude -- Pray, keep a daily gratitude journal, spend some of your thoughts each day on how grateful you are for what you have already and the great things that you know are already on their way.

Ask for What You Want & See It as Already Yours

In order to get the things you want out of life, you need to ask for them. This requires being as specific as possible, so don't be vague. You need for form a clear mental picture of exactly what you want to attract into your life and you need to have this picture in your mind always. You essentially need to see it as already yours. Again, we say, Pray Without Ceasing.

So do what you need to do to create your clear mental picture. Some people can do it by simply visualizing or meditating on what they want and they can easily see it in their mind's eye, but the rest of us need some aids to get that clear an image. This is where things like vision boards and diaries come in. Do what works best for you. Take a day and construct a collage with some visual representations of the things you want in your life, or sit down and write it all down.

Does your goal always need to be at the front of your mind? No. Once you have a clear mental picture of it, it suffices for it to be at the back of you mind while you are focusing on your day to day life, but during your free time you should bring it to the front of your focus and work on fleshing out the details. This will help you to start to see it as already yours.

Wattles says that you should spend all of your free and casual time thinking about what you want -- this is a far cry from the 20 minutes a day The Secret gurus usually recommend. If you are truly going to take that clear mental picture of what you want and see it as already yours, then it is going to take the kind of effort that Wattles says is necessary.

Take Personal Action: ACT NOW!

By thought, the thing that you want is brought to you; by action, you receive it.

In other words, you need to put your hand out and take it. Some action on your part is always required, otherwise you might miss the very thing that has been brought to your doorstep.

There's an old joke about a guy who continuously prays and prays to God for years, asking God to let him win the lottery. One day, he's complaining to God about having never won the lottery and God responds, "You could have at least helped me out by buying a ticket."

Duh. So buy a ticket. Or answer the door when the National Publishers Clearinghouse comes by. Or accept that better job opportunity when it is offered to you.

Wattles recommends some other things as well when it comes to taking action:

  1. Put your whole mind into present action. Don't think about your past action or your future ones. Act now. In other words, stop crying over spilled milk and stop procrastinating. Actions you've taken in the past are reaping their consequences right now. That's just the way it is. You can change the future results by acting NOW and not waiting to act tomorrow. Stop procrastinating.
  2. Do not wait for a change of environment before you act. Get a change of environment by action. Don't say, "oh, everything will get better when I move here, or when I get this raise, or After the New Year." STOP PROCRASTINATING! ACT NOW!

Am I making my point?

Wattles goes on to say:

"Do, every day all that can be done that day efficiently. But don't overwork. Don't do tomorrow's work today - nor do a week's work in a day."

I would also add, if you feel that you are stuck in a dead-end job, don't slack off, but keep in mind that you are doing the work to improve YOUR life, not your bosses. As you continue to focus on your mental picture of that better job or opportunity that you want and start to see it as already being yours, the people who will come into your life to hand you an opportunity will probably NOT be your boss. It's more likely to be a customer, a vendor or another person of influence responding to the new vibe you are putting out there. Take action -- grab the opportunity!

Books I recommend

Law of Attraction: The Science of Attracting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don't by Michael Lossier - A short, but worthy guide to the Law of Attraction. Lossier wrote this book a few years before The Secret came out and it is a great practical guide to using the Law of Attraction in your life.

The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham by Esther & Jerry Hicks. Esther Hicks was originally in The Secret, but due to some differences with the producers she was removed from the extended version of the movie. The Hicks book on Law of Attraction is a "channelled" book. Personally, I think channelling is hogwash, but the information presented in the book is of great value, regardless of its source.

Catherine Ponder

Unity Minister Catherine Ponder is probably my favorite New Thought author. All of her books are incredible, but if you are focused on increasing your wealth and prosperity right now, then I strongly recommend The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity, which was written in the 1960s. If you buy only one book, buy this one.

An Affirmation from Catherine Ponder

"I am an irresistible magnet, with the power to attract unto myself everything that I divinely desire, according to the thoughts, feelings and mental pictures I constantly entertain and radiate. I am the center of my Universe! I have the power to create whatever I wish. I attract whatever I radiate. I attract whatever I mentally choose and accept, I begin choosing and mentally accepting the highest and best in life. I now choose and accept health, success and happiness. I now choose lavish abundance for myself and for all humankind. This is a rich, friendly Universe and I dare to accept its riches, its hospitality, and to enjoy them now."

Creative Visualization Videos

These two videos were put together by the producers of The Secret. They are short videos based on The Secret that you are meant to view every day. The first is filled with prosperity affirmations that will slowly seed their way into your mind before bearing fruit.

The second video is more general with a focus on your life as a whole.
