Six Different Methods You Can Use to Make Money on HubPages

After spending the last four months reading hubs, running experiments and keeping accurate data I learned a few things. As many of you know, success is no accident. If you want to be successful, you must have a goal and create a plan. Success on HubPages is no different. There are several different methods that are being used to make money on HubPages and no matter what your talents are, you can use one to earn money here. More on that later.

When I first started at HubPages several years ago, I was determined to apply my SEO knowledge to make money. Did it work? Yes, I earned money from Adsense. Was it a lot? Nope. However, I was earning Adsense checks using my personal sites. HubPages just added to the earnings. I diversify my online revenue streams because I learned a long time ago, you should never depend on one source of income. Search engine traffic helped me earn from Adsense and Amazon, but it wasn't significant.

In March 2012, I realized that the HubPages Ad Program could be profitable. I earned 10.42 in one month, with only about 24 hubs that had been written 3 years before! Passive income is the best kind of income. That motivated me to start researching how to improve my hubs and increase my earnings. I reached the HubPages payout on April 2012, payment received on May 2012. It took me two months to get my second HubPages payment on July 2012.

What did I learn about making money on HubPages?

Reading hub after hub filled with statistics, tables and screen shots of payments taught me that there are six techniques that can be used to make money on a steady basis. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Find a method that works for you and stick to it. You will see results.

Six Methods That Help You Earn on HubPages

  1. Write often. That's right. Publish several hubs a day. This method works very well for hubbers like JTWalters. She writes about what she experiences. She shares her knowledge. Her collection of hubs resemble a blog. The advantage of this method is that she receives regular page views. The down side is that one has to continue writing regularly to maintain the traffic, since the HubPages Ad Program is the main source of revenue.
  2. Concentrate writing hubs in a niche. This method is very profitable for Janet21. She has a large collection of hubs that deliver page views and sales. Have a hobby or know a lot about a specific topic? Write lots of hubs full of rich content on what you know. Don't forget to link them together. This method has two advantages. The first is that these hubs can earn from a minimum of 4 different income streams: HubPages Ad Program, ebay, Adsense, Amazon and other affiliate networks that you choose. The second advantage is that you can make lots of sales within the niche (especially when it's an evergreen category). Now that's passive income!
  3. Create product hubs. With proper use of keywords and backlinking, this method may bring lots of search engine traffic which increases the possibility of Adsense earnings, ebay clicks and / or Amazon sales. Mark Knowles uses this method very well. He has a large collection of hubs on various products. Another method that delivers passive income.
  4. Write hubs about trending topics. By writing about popular searches on Google, Yahoo, Bing or twitter you can generate lots of traffic in a short amount of time. LauryAllan has mastered this technique. She loves watching TV shows. She creates hubs on the various episodes and receives tons of unique visitors in a short period of time. The disadvantage of this method is that you must continuously write hubs to sustain the page views and earnings.
  5. Write controversial hubs. These generate lots of views, arguments, drama, comments and shares. I'm not going to link to the hubbers that excel at this because I avoid drama. I have 7 kids that keep me busy enough! LOL! The advantages are that they are shared on social sites. There are two big disadvantages. First, it can bring trouble. The second is you have to continuously write new hubs.
  6. Write evergreen content. Helpful hubs that cover how to do things will always get search engine traffic (with proper keyword use and backlinks). These hubs will earn money for you as long as they are on the internet. JimmytheJock has a nice variety of this kind of hub.

What method do I use?

The first hubs I wrote were a combination of niche, product hubs and evergreen content. In 2009, I wrote several hubs on SEO and creating backlinks. Next, I created some product hubs. I would love to publish hubs on a daily basis, but that's difficult. As a mom to 7 kids, I don't have the time. I get the ideas, but don't have the time to develop them into a hub. I don't think I will ever be able to use this method. Forget about controversial hubs. I have been considering using the trending topic, but haven't gotten around to it. I have done it on several of my blogs and the technique works 100%!

So, now you have the tools to make money on HubPages. Alll you need to do is pick a method and take action!

I hope you enjoyed reading this hub! Be sure to take the time to share this with your followers by email, Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook or other social bookmarking site. Don't forget to leave any comments or questions below. Thanks for reading!

@TomRy Evergreen content creates an excellent stream of passive income. However, I have had my product lenses greatly surpass my informational lenses in a short period of time (such as toys at Christmas). I think that a good mix of both is the ideal strategy. What do you think?

Trying to develop a system to make the rinse and repeat part quick and easy. Thanks for joining the conversation and for the vote! ;)

supermom_in_ny profile image

supermom_in_ny 4 years ago from NY Author

@CCahill Correct! Every time you get a new comment, everyone that left a comment gets an email too. Most people will visit the comment to read what the next person left or to see if the author replied. All of that shows up on the feed. However, you never get an email alert when someone shares your hub. It does come up on everyone's feed, but that depends on how many people are online when it's shared. If you follow a lot of people and don't sign on everyday, you will not see every share.

Thanks for participating in the conversation! ;)

Hey awesome hub supermom!

I love your different methods of making income on HP. You are right about writing on trending topics. They can do really well and bring in lots of viewers intially, but then they kind of die, and with the new "Idle" thing will no doubt be de-indexed soon. Probably no longer a good long term strategy on HP, unless you are hoping to direct traffic elsewhere I guess. I've never really done that. Or a good way to see what kind of niche sites you could build that are likely to earn from the sheer volume of traffic passing through.

Also in a hub I wrote recently called Hubpages Income - The Real Story it highlighted how many views you'd need to make a decent income on this strategy (since the CPM tends to be quite low) and it's clear I need to mix it up a bit! I don't think it really hits you until you see the figures of what is required to make a full-time income at HP.

Thank you for using me as an example in your article! I really appreciate it and I love the content you provide on here. It's so helpful. In fact the hub you wrote after this one I am waiting eagerly for your follow on's. I know I have to diversify and write in more places. I'm more than eager to find out about your success on Squidoo and how you do it. It's one place I've never managed to get my head around.

Voted up!

supermom_in_ny profile image

supermom_in_ny 3 years ago from NY Author

@Lauryallan I know what you mean about earnings and CPM. Yesterday, I was shocked to learn that one of the most busiest writers on this site earns less than a $100! I don't know how people were earning thousands here because you don't even earn much from ebay. However, it can be done. I am one that is very persistent. This si why I keep trying to succeed. Right now, I am doing very well at Squidoo. I would like to add earnings from HubPages and other sites to earn enough to pay all my monthly expenses, my daughter's braces and my other daughter's college expenses. I believe I will be earning my target figure by June, if I continue creating more lenses, more hubs and blog posts. My Squidoo lenses don't need much promotion. The HubPages are a little bit more time consuming. I hope to add two more sites to my portfolio by February. I am looking at four different sites. If I can outsource one entirely I will. That will definitely get me to my goal in less than six months.

Tell me exactly which hub you're waiting for. So I can write it. I am going to have to write two to catch up on my reports for the month of October. November is going pretty well and I predict December will be even better! Have to get those toy lenses up! ;)

chrisinhawaii 3 years ago

Dang! Last October she made $9.94 online and this October she made $8k+?!?! I'm speechless, and SO SO SO PUMPED. Okay, back to Skeffling's blog.

Aloha!

@chrisinhawaii Isn't it amazing?! I am happy to report that her technique works. I don't just use her method. I combined about 3-4 different lensmasters methods. She currently has about 429 Squidoo lenses, about 50 are new. I am working my way to 1000. Since starting the income challenge I have added more than 50 a month. I think I now have about 225. Earnings? Looks like by the end of this month I should earn between $500. - $600. through Squidoo, Amazon and other affiliate networks. ;)

chrisinhawaii 3 years ago

sweeeeeet. I just started working on my first lens. What is it? It's a top ten christmas list...what else! =) Okay, talk to you again soon. I need to try to finish this and go to bed before the sun comes up!

supermom_in_ny 3 years ago from NY Author

@chrisinhawaii Excellent! According to Skeffling, top ten lists are huge money makers. Be sure to send me a link to the finished lens so I can check it out. Keep me posted on your progress...

chrisinhawaii 3 years ago

Okay. I'm ready to cut/paste it into my first ever Squidoo lens, but I'm confused. Do we need to set anything up first to start earning on there? Like, with HP you gotta go to your settings and enter your Adsense Id and your paypal email address and opt in to the Ad Program and stuff. But I'm having a hard time finding how Squidoo does it.

Do I just publish and I'm making money? Or do I need to set something up first. I sure don't want to publish and start getting views but not be earning anything for it.

Help!

supermom_in_ny profile image

supermom_in_ny 3 years ago from NY Author

@chrisinhawaii This is the third time I try to post this. Uggh...

Ok, on the top right of your dashboard there is a link that says profile. You can add your paypal info there. You should be using modules such as amazon and ebay to earn money from sales. You can also add your own Amazon links throughout your content. Be sure to use images and use keywords to name them. Use my lens as a guide: http://www.squidoo.com/stomper-slippers

Keep me posted on your progress. Post your lens link on one of my comments so I can check it out. ;)

Lauryallan profile image

Hey supermom thx for the response. $100 dang that's low! I know my income is falling, but my writing efforts have also dropped off as returns have reduced. If I was as active as some of these other people I'd look elsewhere. The reality is I need a full time income. Just like you, I can't afford to just "play" at this stuff. I have bills, rent and student debt to pay. I would also love to be able to take a vacation to somewhere warm once a year.

I am waiting for the hub where you talk about the tool that the top earning squidoo members use to determine if an article is worth writing, because they can rank for it without backlinks. Some of my articles are hit and miss and it's not easy to know why. It's really a guessing game without something like that. It's hard to run a business like that.

I have to thank you again for telling us about Skeffling. Her performance is amazing and is an inspiration to all writers looking to make a full time income. She clearly has a system and works hard at it, producing hundreds of articles every few months.

What I found most interesting is how she says she hardly writes anything on HP because of the changing TOS and has only a few homesteading and hobby type articles.... Again clearly indicating I need to diversify my efforts.

Looking forward to your article or more info on that tool!

I also struggle with layout/modules and making Squidoo lens look nice. It's way more complicated than HP but has more options.

Lauryallan profile image

Lauryallan 3 years ago

I already posted a reply but it didn't appear. I will try again so if this is a repeat, I'm happy for you to delete this message.

I was really interested in the tool you said you were going to tell us about that the successful people on squidoo are using to assess whether to write an article or not before hand, as they knew it would rank without backlinks. One of the hardest things with article writing is trying to guess in the dark. It's hit and miss....

I always would love to know how you are making money from amazon. It's something I've really sucked at in the past, but would also love to learn.

I can't understand hubbers that write non stop for $100. I was really hoping 2012 was the learning year for me and that my income would take off. I need a full time income in 2013 to pay my living expenses and student debts. I'd love to be in a position to do this for fun or enjoyment, but the reality is I'm not in that situation at all.

Best of luck with those toy hubs and look forward to seeing these new hubs.

Absolutely spot on advice. Your best tip, I think, is to write evergreen hubs. When I was first on Hubpages I wrote a lot about politics and current events. During the 2008 election those generated lots of traffic and comments, not to mention drama-- but there is nothing older than old news LOL . A couple of years ago ( post Panda) I revamped my strategy and virtually all of those political hubs have been deleted.

These days I concentrate on evergreen topics and a couple of specific niches and I have a small, but fairly consistent income stream from the Ad Program which I really love.

Life is good. Evergreen hubs are great and you get a big thumbs up for this one.

chrisinhawaii 3 years ago

Thanks for the help, supermom! That was my first intensive product/sales type of article. It looks like that's the way to go to make money on Squidoo: reviewing/selling products. I still can't get over Skeffling's Amazon affiliate income. I need to learn more about how you guys write these types of articles to effectively sell the products.

Okay, back to school for me!

supermom_in_ny profile image

supermom_in_ny 3 years ago from NY Author

@Lauryallan You are very welcome! I am so happy I took the step and used this tool. Almost all of my lenses in one of my Squidoo accounts is on the first page of Google. I am about to earn $500. - $600. for the month. That's the most I've earned from Squidoo and Amazon in one month!

supermom_in_ny profile image

supermom_in_ny 3 years ago from NY Author

@robie2 Thanks! Yes, evergreen hubs are great money makers. I have hubs that I wrote years ago that still generate views and sales through amazon and ebay. The most important factor in writing your evergreen content is choosing the right keywords. Once you have a low competition keyword that gets lots of searches plus unique content, you won't need backlinks. I tested it with Squidoo and now with HubPages. The best part is that gives you more time to create more content!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Good luck on HubPages! ;)

@chrisinhawaii Skeffling's results are not impossible! I can't believe that I have earned son much this month. I can't wait to see what December is going to be like! I wonder how much I'm going to earn 12 months from now. I'm going to continue adding lenses every month until I get to 1000. After that, I plan to continue outsourcing the lens building to concentrate on building other passive income streams using HubPages and other web 2.0 sites. It's important to diversify your income streams. Learned that several years ago. ;)

Waw that's awesome supermom. Makes me feel like I wasted the past year concentrating on traffic when I should have been concentrating on buyer keywords and product sales instead. Hopefully I'll get better at it in 2013

supermom_in_ny profile image

supermom_in_ny 3 years ago from NY Author

@Lauryallan I know exactly how you feel. After getting that keyword tool, I decided to check out my other keywords. You know what I found? I had created lenses using keywords that either had 10,000 competing sites or less than 10 searches a month! No wonder I was wasting my time. Creating content without an effective keyword tool is like throwing darts at a dartboard while you're wearing a blindfold. Now I just find a keyword, build the lens and publish it. That's it! Rinse and repeat. By the way, the same technique works with HubPages. I used it to write two hubs and they're both on the first page of Google for their keywords! All the top earning lensmasters use the same keyword tool. That's where I learned about it. So glad that I did. It turned my results around. I can't wait to see what happens in the next 12 months! ;)

Hey that's awesome! I've been using the Google keyword tool for keyword research but it's not always accurate. Are you saying Jaxxy is better and if so do you know why?

@Lauryallan That keyword tool is the reason the lensmasters are making all the money they make! I know it's the reason why I am making money. It shows you exactly how many sites are competing for a keyword. If the keyword is a good choice, it will have a green dot next to it. It can show you if there are other lenses or hubs competing for the same keyword. It tells you how many searches the exact phrase gets. I tested it with a lens that I bought and that lens was one of my biggest moneymakers for the Halloween season. I never create any content here, on my sites or Squidoo without using it. That's why I don't build backlinks anymore. ;) If you check out the video on the link I gave you, you can see how it works. They give you a 7 day free trial. I started with the free trial, but decided to just take the leap and I am so glad that I did! :)

@Lauryallan Wait until you see what you can do! I spent hours researching my hubs, lenses and sites. I couldn't believe how I was wasting my time using the wrong keywords. Ok, I earned money from my sites before but not like I'm earning now! Love this keyword tool! ;)

I too am busy and often get ideas but don't have the time to develop them or publish daily. Thanks for sharing these great tips and your personal experience. This is very useful for all who read it.

@Express10 I know exactly what you mean! This is why I had to fine shortcuts. LOL! I not only write here, but I have a network of blogs, provide SEO services, build Squidoo lenses and websites and am a mother to 7 kids and a small zoo. Never a dull moment!

Thanks for joining the conversation. Good luck here!

@Kasman You are very welcome! Try one strategy and if it doesn't work for you, try the another. It's all about providing lots of content and getting traffic to it. Targeted traffic to your money pages is what brings sales, clicks, etc. :)

I am very new to Hubpages, so I find this type of information very helpful. I don't think in terms of strategies, but maybe this will help me do well in this community.

@Ilona1 Welcome to HubPages. I'm sure you will see that this is a very helpful community. I have written several hubs that you may find informative as a beginner. You can find them throughout the site or by checking out my profile. Don't forget to add ebay modules to your hubs. Even though you earn by click, they can help you get to your first payout a lot quicker. Good luck! :)
