Using Dollar Menu Items to Save Time and Money

There are times when you come home from work and don't have the energy, much less the time to make dinner. What do you do? Go to your local burger chain and order a burger from the dollar menu. But don't stop there. What I like to do is take that burger home and dress it up.

For example, I can get a McDouble hamburger from my local McDonald's. It's great because it comes with two patties of hamburger and it only set me back a buck. It comes with cheese and a couple of pickle slices and a little bit of ketchup. It's very boring.

When I get home, I get to dress it up any way I like. I take some crispy iceberg lettuce and place it on top. Next, I slice some plum tomatoes and chop up some red onions and pile that on top of the lettuce. I put a little more ketchup on the top bun and I've made a nice hamburger with all the trimmings for a little over a buck. And I didn't have to cook either!

Now you can eat this hamburger the way it is or, if you have some leftover french fries from a previous restaurant meal, you can nuke it and add it to your hamburger. Restaurants with table service usually have such big portions that I end up taking a lot of it home with me to stretch it out to two meals. Usually when it comes to french fries, you can have it for a third day. Never let any food from a restaurant meal go to waste. When you get home, put it in some plastic containers and have it as leftovers for the next day.

You can also do this with the breakast value menu. I buy the sausage biscuit, again only for a buck, I take it home, fry up an egg and put it on top and I've got a very hardy breakfast sandwich. As for dessert, I take advantage of McDonald's 2 for $1 apple pies. I take them home, and since they are already warm, I just top it with ice cream and I get pie a la mode without having to bake a whole pie.
