...it is important to not be scammed when you are looking to get stuff off of the internet for free. The inner cheap skate sees an ad for a free iPad and shouts Hallelujah but my inner skeptic asks the questions, "What's the catch?" A word of advice, listen to that skeptic.
What follows are a couple ways you can earn gift cards and in some cases money with just the investment of time. That is the catch with this. Time. Some of these things are fast and easy and others take up a lot of time. My word of advice is rather than jumping in full bore, just do a little each day. It adds up. I have been doing this for 6 months and I've made about $120 in Amazon gift cards. All I did was invest 10 minutes or less a day to these 3 things.
Bing Rewards is the easiest of the three because all you have to do is search. If you install the Bing Bar it makes life easy for tracking and such. I use Firefox & Chrome for my web surfing, but I installed the Bing Bar on Internet Explorer because that added a degree of separation and I could have multiple browsers open to allow for multitasking.
Bing Rewards is completely free. You can sign up here. All you are expected to do is search. A tip for you. If you go to the travel section and click through the slide shows, each click is a search. If you use Bing for your search engine then this is even better. You get paid to search for stuff. Usually it is 1 point for every 2 or 3 searches. There are bonuses here or there like looking up movies or liking on Facebook. The Bing Bar comes in handy here because it tracks those things for you. I redeem my points for Amazon gift cards, but you can get Xbox points, Hulu Plus for a month and other fun stuff. There is also physical prizes, but I like the gift cards myself.
Swagbucks has a lot of earning potential but it also takes time and sometimes even money. This is one were you always look for the catch. Still, the potential is great as well. You can register by going to swagbucks.com. With Swagbucks you can earn a lot quickly or slowly. I choose the snailway generally.
You see, there are all sorts of ways to earn Swagbucks points. One way is answering the daily poll, that other is to watch Swagbucks TV. Yet another is to take advantages of the coupon they offer. The options for earning are limited only by how much or little you want to do.
My first Swagbucks points earned was through a credit check and getting Netflix. Since 450 points equaled a $5 gift card to Amazon, I managed for make $50 in gift cards very quickly. As with Bing rewards you have lots of options other than Amazon including physical stuff.
Amazon's Mechanical Turk
Mechanical Turk is an Amazon service. It is great for finding a little work here or there. What you do is fulfill HITS which are little jobs. This particular service has potential for making real money as well as Amazon credits. You can register here. Like with Swagbucks, you pick what you do and how much you do. There are HITS that are a waste of time and there are others that are worth while. You pick your poison. I managed to earn $25+ after a few weeks of doing work here and there for 5 or 10 minutes at a time.
As for payments, you can have the money you earn applied to your Amazon account or sent as a payment to your bank account through direct deposit. There is a minimum amount you need to earn to have the money sent to your bank but there is no minimum limit to having the money applied to your Amazon account.
I am sure there are other options out there for earning gift cards and money. I have tried a few of them and didn't like what I see. As I mentioned in the beginning, it is all about what the catch is. If the catch is just time, that can be fine if you aren't wasting your time. If the catch is other things, you have to honestly ask yourself if it is worth it. If it is, go for it.
