When Circumstances Turn Your World Upside Down: How to Live From the Inside Out

There are times in our lives when we choose to fly in close formation, following someone else's lead. Then there are times when we seek to separate ourselves from others, discover our own autonomy and authority, and make our way by setting our own course.

These are times when following the crowd, listening to conventional wisdom, or relying on mainstream media is similar to following a faulty flight plan. Most Americans are in debt, following the same path as our federal government. But unlike our federal government, individuals and families cannot print money as a way to postpone the inevitable.

Various reports assert that one in three people retire with less than $900.00 a month in income. The average person in the United States at age 50 has a net worth of $40,000; one in three have bad credit; and most working adults are 4 paychecks away from disaster; while only 3% of Americans are independently wealthy. (Danny Allen, 12/2011).

In order to address these critical issues and position oneself for a financially secure future, most of us need a fundamental shift in our mindset. The world in which we live has never been seen before, and the things many of us in our middle years were taught to believe simply no longer applies. We also need true financial education, which is something seriously lacking for most. We need to learn how to eliminate our debt, build our wealth and protect our assests. One of the most effective ways to position and protect ourselves is to find a home-based business with a product(s) and/or service(s) we can believe in and feel passionate about; and to build multiple streams of income.

I have found that awareness and education are essential, and that being able to embrace a new way of thinking is the first step. Often called a paradigm shift, the way you think about your current situation and your future is all about your mindset. Are you stuck? Do you feel like a victim? Does it feel as if someone else is controlling your day to day life as well as your destiny?

Many today feel horribly vulnerable in the face of the broken economy. Do you feel as if circumstances have turned your world upside down? Does it feel as if fear and loss are stalking you, and you are being suffocated by debt? As bleak and hopeless as things might seem, these realities can be a blessing in disguise. If you can step back just a bit for some perspective, you'll find that the loss or the void has created some room. There is now space for new beginnings and fresh opportunities. With little left to lose, it is often easier to take some risks and to take action.

It is important to make an honest assessment of your current situation, and then become clear about what you want. Who are you - truly - as a person? What are your values? Do you have a desire, maybe one you've never dared to share with anyone else? Do you secretly long to be more, do more and have more? Is there something stirring inside you, a little flicker of hope that sometimes is stronger than the concerns you carry?

Everyone has genuine fears, suffers significant losses, and is faced with one challenge after another. What we do about them is what sets us apart. How we choose to deal with them is what makes the difference. You and I are always one decision away from a fuller, freer, more abundant life.

My financial education and fundamental change in mindset began when I became an entrepreneur and I was catapulted into a whole new world by reading, "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki; and "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. The holistic education I enjoy through my home-based businesses continues to be deeply rewarding. Today I am living a life that not too many years ago seemed impossible and was out of reach.

If you see yourself in any of the abovementioned descriptions or statistics, there are viable and exciting options available to you. There are key factors to consider. You need to do your research in order to find something that is legitimate and has a proven track record. It is alright to be skeptical and ask tough questions, but if you are cynical you will deprive yourself of the possiblitiy to engage in something truly exciting and rewarding. So be careful and thoughtful, and don't confuse the two.

Finally, its important to realize that if you don't have a dream and a real willingness to invest in yourself, there is nothing anyone can say or do to motivate you; and no opportunity will seem right for you. If you truly want to live a larger life and you do have a vision, then you can succeed. If you are willing to set your own course, stop listening to the naysayers, put less stock in the external influences honking all around you and trust yourself, you can then start living from the inside out. You will see that these are amazing times, bursting with opportunities, as you choose to make room for new possibilities and decide to take action.
