In the part of the US where I live jobs have been vanishing and wages have been declining for years. My wages have gone down by about a third every seven years for the last 20 years or so. That's about how often I've had to change jobs for one reason or the other. In 2009 a bank I was working for failed, and I didn't get another job until 2010. It paid minimum wage.
Last year my annual wage was so low I decided to just be semi-retired and go back to writing. So far so good. I mean, I can make minimum wage at home, no sense in wearing a hairnet or smock unless I enjoy it. I don't take it personally and I'm not bitter. Lots of other people my age are in the same boat around here, and to tell the truth, I've got grandkids now so I'd rather be home anyway. I've worked my whole life, hard, and honestly, I'm pretty tired of it.
If I had a shot at a good job I'd try to get one, but realistically, at this age, it ain't gonna happen. There's a big difference between work and a job. I still work.
