So far I have been focusing on surveys in the $.50 to $1 range and am having decent luck. Around 10 surveys a day nets me $5 for around an hour of work. Not too bad for killing free time.
Sounds like you are doing much better than I did! That's a decent amount of money to make in an hour in your free time.

The interface is actually pretty intuitive. You can categorize HITs by payout so it's easy to sort through the wastes of time and new HITs are posted literally every second. I guess our experiences are different.
I disagree that the payout amount determines whether or not it's a waste of time. A 0.03 cent task that is easy and can be done in bulk is a much better option than a $1.00 assignment that requires a half an hour of work.
Yeah there's several tasks up that range in the 10-15 cent range that you can knock out in a matter of minutes. But then again as you get to know the different Requesters it become easier to weed through the trash jobs as well.
anniedee, I have to call you out on this because your point defies logic which is probably why you aren't having success on mTurk: A $.03 even if it takes a minute would only net you $.90 in half an hour. $1 for 1 task is much better than 30 for $.90
I would never spend a minute on a 0.03 cent task. Maybe 15-20 seconds. I work quickly. Different people work in different ways. You don't have to treat me like I'm stupid because I've had a different experience.
Actually, I thought it was your poor reasoning that made you look that way. 15-20 per task is hyperbole (for obvious reasons), which illustrates how your invalid argument can be misleading. I simply wanted to clarify for other readers.
