   People like us seek an undefinable sense of fulfillment, a connection and purpose. People want to make a difference outside of the parameters of their day-to-day lives. We need to feel a connection; we want a connection. One way to make a connection and seek fulfillment is through volunteering for a charitable organization. read more

   Stiggy's Dogs  http://stiggysdogs.org/  This organization helps 2 types of individuals at the same time.  Their logo is "Rescuing one to help rescue another".  They pair up rescued dogs with military people who are suffering from PTSD.  This is a great organization and their story is inspiring.  We have been supporting them for about a year now since we saw a story on our local news channel. Then by a chance meeting got to meet the man and dog featured in that story.  We can't afford to give too much but this group is helping 2 groups our whole family supports, rescued dogs and our military.

   My two favourites are Plan Canada which helps children, esp. girls, in developing countries all over the world, and Operation Smile which is American and sends doctors and other medical professionals to developing countries to treat children with cleft lip and palate. Both of them do great jobs, are very transparent, and are extremely worthy of our support.

   My favorite is Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).  A CASA volunteer is an individual who is willing to undergo training in order to help a child under court supervision in cases of abuse and neglect.  The job of a CASA is to assess the facts of the child's case and present them by written report to the in Court, find resources for the child, and aid in providing for the child's best interests as long as the child is under Court supervision.   Here is the CASA website:  http://www.casaforchildren.org/site/c.m … /Home.htm.  I will write a hub regarding my experience in choosing volunteer opportunities for charitable organizations, such as youth groups, schools, and the like.  Thanks for this idea.

    Hockey8mn just wrote a Hub on Toys for Tots and that is a great one this time of year along with the Salvation Army, one of my wife's favorites.  For the military, I like the USO and Wounded Warriors.

    Hi Simone,
    I recommend the Hunger Fund of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. It provides grants to churches in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia that have feeding programs for the needy. I attend one of those churches and have been coordinating the breakfast ministry for the homeless for years. What makes this charity so trustworthy and effective is that it is stipulated that the entire grant be used for food and supplies, no administrative costs. And an accounting of how the money was used has to be submitted a year later before you can apply for another grant. What is the deadline for this hub challenge?

    United Way is a nonprofit organization that fund raises for charities and nonprofit agencies in your local areas.  It has strict regulations and requires quarterly reports from the agencies it supports.  It will only support agencies that are audited annually and require a copy of the the audit to review it.  What I am saying, is the agencies listed under United Way in your local area are managed to make sure they do what they say they will do.
    
    United Way can only support so many agencies per year, depending on their projected donations.  The agencies they support are selected by applying by application.  The United Way Board of Directors selects the agencies.
    
    It might be worth you while to check out United Way in your local area to see who they are supporting in 2013.

    I recently discovered a charity called Kiva that gives out microloans to small business from various countries (a lot of them are developmental ones) . You can check out the profiles of the potential lenders and their stories. Many of these people need these types of loans because they cannot get conventional loans. Many of these people are trying to expand their small business or start a new one.  You don't necessarily 'donate' anything (though you can donate to the actual charity itself for their maintenance fees), you're just lending money. Over time you will get the money back, and you can choose to lend it to someone else, donate it, or get it back.

    There are many organizations to which you can contribute financially or not, however I think it is important to be sure that our money or our time is being well spent, in a particular case, we have chosen.
    So I advise everyone to consult the website of ICFO, or another of the same kind.
    
    The purpose of ICFO is to ensure that fundraising for charitable purposes is being organized and performed in a satisfactory manner and that the administration of the collected funds is adequate. ICFO and its Members look after the interests of donors.

    My admiration for the grit, heart, integrity and perseverance of the founder leads me to recommend the Lily Moon Sustainability Project in Costa Rica and Colorado.

    Feed my Starving Children. They use 90% of their funds to feed starving children around the world and they have a 99.8% success rate in terms of getting food to their locations
