Money serves many different purposes and too many to list here, and I'm sorry, but not really in the mood to put this into a hub. So, simply put- money is the power that makes society and government operate. Without it, one would surely not like their living conditions nor would they be able to have any form of "quality" to their life.
Sure, they would be able to live on the streets, but to let them do so, for whatever reasons, is cold-hearted and cruel. I am very glad that this Taiwan person decided to give money to the poor. It's a great gesture and more people should think about what they are doing, before they commit that kind of money. However, it would also depend on how the money was eventually used. If you just gave it to them, so they could go and buy things, then you are just enabling their position and agreeing that is alright to be poor.
This breeds the wrong ideology about life to those who apparently do not really understand it. It isn't better to keep the money yourself, but to use the money in a manner that is more beneficial and helpful to get them OUT of their position and moving forward in life would be better.
