Some Kids Make Money Online Testing New Video Games

There are numerous "making money on-line" ideas for those who wish to earn some money on the web, but about the most popular ones amongst teenagers and young boys is beta game testing.

The fact that kids and many teenagers make money on-line is nothing new. Lots of kids are earning on the web and doing great too.

But earning money from home as a beta game tester is a great job that is worth doing if you can get one.

Many young kids are of the opinion that to work as a video game tester, all you need is to love playing video games and have the knack to spend several hours a day playing, but this is not so. There is an actual learning curve and process involved in game testing.

What is Video Game Testing?

For those of you who don't quite understand what this means, video game testing involves testing beta video games before they are released to the public for sale.

Testers are supposed to test "yet to be released games" for glitches, errors and bugs that may occur or exist in the games.

As a game tester you will be evaluating the game play and the quality of its sound and graphics. You are also expected to share your views on whether the game was enjoyable or not.

The idea behind this is to ensure that the game works perfectly as it is meant to, before it can be released to the millions of buyers all over the world.

One of the perks of working on-line as a game tester is that you get to play the games first before anyone else does but things can get monotonous very quickly.

Playing and testing the same game for hours can become tiresome or even nerve racking, and like many internet based jobs, things can get repetitive.

But then playing video games and getting paid for it is many video game playing youngsters dream, and most will do almost anything to "land" this exciting though demanding job.

Is it Easy Making Money Testing Games?

Yes and no.

You may love playing video games and probably spend eight to ten hours a day playing.

But if you are under sixteen, its almost impossible, but you can start off by learning and interacting with others of similar interests.

Yes, you may think you are a good candidate for beta game testing job openings, but getting video game tester jobs isn't as easy as many may feel because being a high paying and enjoyable job;

  1. The competition is stiff. Every kid wants to be a game tester but job openings are few.
  2. Many game development industries prefer that you work onsite.
  3. You may have to possess ample computer skills, though requirements may have become lenient these days.
  4. You need to be current about the latest high-tech devices and video games on the market.
  5. Have the skills of quick adaptation to the different strategies, systems, and techniques involved in video game playing.
  6. And most importantly, your English must be impeccable and fluent because you will have to write very detailed reports.

These are just some of the requirements of becoming a video game tester but it also means that most enthusiastic but self disciplined players can become a video game tester and receive an income for services rendered.

Many companies that do employ may make you wait for a number of weeks before hiring you.

But even though many kids have been lucky to get a slot in this great industry, it's very hard (though not impossible) to get one if you are under eighteen.

How to Become a Video Game Tester

Making money on-line as a game tester is interesting especially if you are a video gaming enthusiast, but it's a lot of hard work and you may have tight schedules and deadlines to meet.

But it's still fun if you can get the job and earn money on-line doing what you love best.

It is essential to learn a bit about game testing before thinking of asking for employment.

Reading books and searching on-line for further information goes a long way in preparing you for something that’s worth making a career out of.

It is good to know that the video game testing industry is highly lucrative with income ranging from $10 to $20 an hour.

Other than these, you don't need much more to become a video game tester. You need to get (or share) a computer with good internet access and some spare time.

What you'll be doing is playing games, and while playing, detect irregularities, unwanted electronic signals, bugs, glitches, technical problems, etc., and submitting what you find to the video games manufacturers. That's it!

Sounds hard? Not really, because you don't need experience as such, nor do you need a BA degree in marketing to do this.

Related: Kids Earn Money On-line Too, To Earn Extra Cash

And if you are smart and resourceful you can do this without even having to finish high school. And you can keep making money on-line constantly because the more games you can test, the more money you will earn.

The game development companies that will employ you to play and test their video games will give you the latest and greatest games that are yet to hit the stores.

They do have programmers who abound in their industry, but programmers are not game players in anyway.

And as companies find it too expensive to hire full time video game testers to test their products, they therefore employ youngsters, and pay them well to test and play their newly developed games.

Testimonials from Young Video Game Testers

  • "Hi, I just wanted to say thank you! I got your guide, applied for a job with M****soft and I actually got it. This job kicks so much ass!!! THANK YOU" - Dave, B. Miami, FL

  • "Here's a success story for your website... In the beginning I was a bit sceptical, but then I received a free game, and then a $300 check! I used to spend my time playing games and not being 'productive'. Now I play games AND I'm being 'productive'. What a change, right? Thank you for giving me this opportunity!" - Nick, C. New York, NY.

Connor 6 years ago

Hey, Im 11 and I love to play video game. So I wanna be able to make money doing it, but sadly, ALL the game testing jobs out there you have to be 18 or older to aply. And I wanted to know is this for real? Can I really be a kid game tester? And what kind of games do you get, because I like M and up games such as:

-Fallout 3(My favorate)

-Halo 3

-Red Dead Redemption

-Red Faction: Guarrila

-GTA4

-Ect.

So yeah. Really glad I found this site, please reply back. Im kinda confused, thanks.

Connor 6 years ago

Oh yeah, almost forgot. What kinda consoles do you play on? Do I get to choose? If so, I want XBox 360/XBox LIVE

viryabo profile image

viryabo 6 years ago Author

Hello Connor, thanks for visiting. You will first need your parents or guardians consent. As you are still a bit young, you will need to be under a close supervision of an adult. Plus some game tester jobs may be un-allowed for an 11 year old, especially the 'violent' type of games. must be the 'milder' games for your age bracket.

If consent is given (very important!) then you can sign up with game tester job websites and learn how to make money playing video games.

From there, you can decide if you want to make it a career in the near future.

I hope this helps Connor.

GodBless.

viryabo profile image

viryabo 6 years ago Author

Hello Leah, i don't blame you. The net is full of scammers. However, it is true that young people do make money as video game testers, but not as young as you. You must be a bit older. Closer to 18 than 13 leah.

But you can start by practicing and going on forums to start to get the idea. By the time you've learnt a lot in a few years, you'll be good to go and will have an edge over others.

Hey I've been interested in making money from being a video game tester. I'm currently 17 years old and will be 18 in about two months. I play video games every day for about 3-8 hours depending on my other obligations for the day. I was wondering where I should start that isn't too sketchy and provides the opportunity that I'm looking for. I enjoy all types of games, but I primarily play MMORP games (World of Warcraft) and Shooter games (Halo/Call of Duty). If you could post back with some advice or send me an E-mail with suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sean 5 years ago

Viryabo, I need a game tester job, I am homeschooling so I only do school for like 4 hrs so I get off at like lunch which gives me a giant mobility for any possible game time,I have been interested in video game testing and I can play for hours and my attention span to catch a glitch is pretty good so bugs are no problem. My usual days go from 8:30 am to about 12:00 pm and I could wake up at 6:00 am and play to 7:30 pm, I usually eat at around 8:00-9:00 and I'm not sure if it is true but most websites say that they don't care when you get the testing done but it is prefer it to be done in about a month and that depends on you're pay and i don't know if that is the same here. Sum up: I can play, I can stay up,and i can Test

I was able to land a game tester job making $12 per hour my first 3 months and then my pay when up to $15 per hour because I was able to provide them with quality work thanks to what these membership sites online teach you.

I tried the old school way of getting a video game tester position with one of the local game developers in my area but I never got called in for an interview.

These online game tester websites are worth the information they provide, and I think it's funny how everyone still talks about these places like their scams.

The top rated one has been online for 5 years helping gamers out everyday. So hope that helps if you had any doubts.

Hello, i am 14 years old and i have been trying to find ways to make money by playing video game for a while now. I found that it is not easy and that it is a lot of work. I also found out that i am pretty young. In the future i would like to design and develop games. I really don't care anymore if i get paid right now or not i just want to start doing something. So i was just wondering if you have any ideas for me.

viryabo profile image

viryabo 5 years ago Author

Hello Derrick,

I will say that you are making the right decision and moving in the right direction now.

Learning about game development if you cant find a video game testing job is wise.

You can start to do that now, and if you get a job soon, you'll have gained some knowledge and be ahead of your peers in the video game testing industry.

Game designers and developers earn more money than video game testers anyway, so its a great career.

So go for it Derrick.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

I would like to let people know that I've gotten a testing job with 5*h*ce**. and that many companies are now hiring persons over the age of 18. I believe capcom is one of the more notable companies.

In another note, in the united states, it is very much possible that a youth under the age of 16 can get a simple job with their parent's consent. I know this as i an only 16 an have had a job since I was 14.

By the way video game testing jobs require A strong vocabulary and correct use of grammar. That is why most younger people like myself would not get hired.

Hello ally, You are too young for now at 11. The game testing industry prefers older teens.

Wait a few years and probably read books on how to become a game tester. By the time you are old enough, you'll know more about it than your peers.

Best of luck Ally.

Hello Andy, thanks for dropping by. I will give you where you can find further info on what you can do and what to expect.

Please expect to hear from me through your email.

Alan hi.

Im glad you got a game testing job. Wow! such luck.

As you rightly said, some game testing companies are somewhat picky and require that you write well and have great vocabulary.

Thank you for your input.

Best of luck.

viryabo 4 years ago Author

Hello Tayla.

As i told Ally, for now, you are pretty young, but if you start reading up about game testing, you will be ready in a few years and will find it slightly easier to find a job with a game industry.

Competition is quite fierce because video game testing pays well, and the younger you are, the more difficult it may be to get a job fast.

But never give up. Read more on the topic and familiarise yourself with it. You may be able to get a job as a beta tester sooner than you expect.

Goodluck.

Hello CJ.

Im so sorry for not giving you feedback on game tester job opportunities sooner than now.

CJ, you are a bit too young now, to be a game tester, but if you wish, you can send me a PM and i can show you the path to take to prepare you for a game testing career.

Cheers.

Hi!

My name is Joachim, and im 14 years old, and pretty good to English.

I can a bit of Game Development and have been "gaming" since i began in school (6 years old).

Do you think its possible for me to get a job? :S

viryabo profile image

viryabo 4 years ago Author

Hi Joachim, as i told some above, you are still too young. I advise that you learn up or read about game testing while you wait to grow a bit older, so by the time you apply, you will be knowledgeable about video game testing and have an edge over your peers.

The competition is very fierce and the older guys usually get the jobs first.

Yes, it is possible to get a job, but not now Joachim. In a few more years perhaps.

Meanwhile i wish you the best of luck.

Hi Leo,

You are a bit too young now Leo. Please wait a few more years, but meanwhile read and learn more about game testing. By the time you are old enough, you will find it easier to get a beta testing job.

Its a great thing to make a career out of what one loves doing, and im sure you will go places with that mindset.

Send me a PM and i can help with a deeper insight into how you may approach beta testing.

Meanwhile, reading and learning about what video testing entails will help give you an edge when you finally apply for that job.

Thanks for visiting.

Hey im 13 and wondering if i would be allowed to test 18 rated games if your parents give you permission

viryabo profile image

viryabo 4 years ago Author

Hello Callum,

The chances of getting game tester jobs is really remote when you are 13.

The older guys do get the jobs first, plus its good to be 18 before you can get the job. In rare cases does anyone under sixteen get one, and its good to learn a bit about video beta testing while waiting to grow a bit older.

I wish you all the best Callum.

Hey guys :)

I have been searching for a site where I can get a video game job for a few hours now. I am turning 16 years old in this summer, and I have told my parents about this site and am allowed from my parents to try this possibility and play violent games.

I am playing about 3-5 hours daily, and I am never getting tired, but i know when i have to stop for the day, hehe.

I am playing on a ps3, but I am gonna buy a brand new gaming computer soon when im getting enough money.

If there is any possibility for me to get a job with game testing, please contact me at this email.

Hello Brittani, you are still too young at 14 and the likelihood of getting a video game testing job at a young age is slim. 18years and above have better chances.

Learn about game testing, game design while you wait to grow a bit older.

Staci 4 years ago

Thank you for this informative site, i am a frustrated mother of an 8 year old. My son is only allowed to play video games during the weekend and on a non busy day he can play for 3-5 hours. In two 3 hour sessions he can clear a game. Is this Normal? I know every parent thinks their child is special, I am a realistic person, although he is adorable, I just don't know enough about games. We have x-box, PS3, WIi, DSI and PS2. I am sure I make most parents cringe but we let him play Call of Duty, Red Dead redemption, Modern Warfare, James Bond eagle eye, halo, Simpsons and ect. No matter the level he's done it just 2 days! He's been doing it since he was 4, so we have became pros a game renting since the challenge is a breeze. I don't think a game tester is place for an 8 year old, I just don't know if we should be trying improve a skill I find a tad annoying but something he is good at and enjoys doing. I am not game savvy, so clearly he doesn't get it from me, I just don't know how to challenge him or direct him for a possible gaming future!

viryabo profile image

viryabo 4 years ago Author

Wow! He must be a brilliant young chap. His talent in game playing and his passion for it can be channelled positively in my honest opinion. It must not go to waste unless he begins to loose interest in the near future.

You are right about game testing, plus he should go a step further than that. He needs something challenging that he can possibly become a genius in.

Im thinking about game design and development. Ask him if he will love to design a game, just as someone designed the ones he loves. I bet he will love to.

Start him off by letting him read or research (with him) about the simple basics of game design. There are books that will help guide him along. Then further down the road buy him an easy to use game design software. He can play and learn etc....

In another 8 or 9 years he can apply for game testing jobs, just to learn more about the intricacies of game development, plus earn some extra money in the process.

If the "fire" of his passion still glows, he can go on to college and obtain a degree in game art/design/development.

The sky is the limit.

You are handling the issue beautifully and that's what he needs. Guiding him along and helping him nurture his passion into a highly lucrative new age career is really great.

Hope this helps.

I think you have a future genius game developer and designer in your hands right now. You are blessed.

Best of luck Staci, and thanks for visiting.

Those who do have a little more to offer than their passion. My article on "5 ways to find game testing jobs" might help. viryabo profile image

viryabo 4 years ago Author

Hi Cara, Zman and Hunter. As i have mentioned in my earlier comments, you are too young to get a chance of landing a video game testing job.

Thousands of kids worldwide want the same, so competition is stiff.

Start to read up on game design and development just for the fun of it.

Take it a step further by learning about game design in your spare time.

Such knowledge will give you an edge by the time you are 18 because you will know what many seeking for the job don't know. Thats a sure faster way of getting great jobs in the game industry, be it game testing or game development and design.

Best of luck.

viryabo profile image

viryabo 4 years ago Author

Hello Cyril,

You didn't mention your age, but its a great thing that you have an interest in video game design & development.

Those who have some knowledge of these aspects of games are usually preferred by employers in the game industry.

This is not to say that only those knowledgeable get video game testing jobs. But the competition is VERY stiff.

I suggest you join forums where you can interact with young people, video game lovers, designers, etc. You will learn a lot from the interaction and this will take you steps closer to your dream.

All the best.

viryabo profile image

viryabo 4 years ago Author

Edward, Ashontee, Miguel hi.

You guys are good candidates for game testing jobs because of your ages.

But it is rare to find advert for game testing jobs flying around the web because the competition is so fierce.

The good news is that you can join membership sites and be active in their forums. They have both the connections and ads for all job openings for beta game testing, game design, etc. Through them you will get lined up for interviews. You can start off from there.

There are openings at Sony, Microsoft, and all the known game developers (and a great number of smaller companies), but to know how to apply, how to prepare resumes, etc., can be achieved through these membership sites.

So get to work! :) and stick to it.

Best of luck

Athena 3 years ago

Jeez, some of the kids commenting here really can't type well. Either that or they're not good at English. You know it isn't all just fun and games you have to have some English skills because you have to write well detailed reports. You aren't just playing the game you have to analyze it and see where the bugs are or where are the rough patches and then report them to the company. I don't think that this kind of job is for 11 or 13 year olds. I think maybe you should explain that in your article above. This is coming from a 17 year old who has tested and now I make small games with a group of friends. (we're just learning the programs right now). Learning to program is a pain in the butt, but I think rather than small kids looking for jobs in video game testing, I think they should be encouraged to learn more about the games they love. You guys are to young. It bothers me just how many of you believe it is just getting paid to play when it isn't. Well those are just my two cents.

Thank you for your comments Athena. Its been difficult trying to let the very young ones know that its almost impossible for them to get these beta game testing jobs in the comments.

I appreciate your suggestion and think i will write it out boldly for the 11 to 14 year olds that its a hard feat. I have already explained the best ways for them to approach it in http://viryabo.hubpages.com/hub/5-ways-of-finding-...

I hope they read that.

BTW congrats on you and your friends achievements. You will certainly go far. Best wishes

Cool Guy, like you rightly observed, it's mainly for 18 years old and above. You are still too young to get a chance of a job in video game testing. Competition is very tough.

Hey! My name is Gloria and I'm 16. I am not exactly interested in video game beta testing. I'm more interested in like IMVU or Second life; Virtual worlds and such. I'm also interested in different types of software like music production, videography, photography and graphic design as well as art studio software and ect. I was wondering if you guys could help. I have been looking everywhere!

Thanks!

Hello Gloria, I'm sorry for the late reply.

My advice to you is to search for forums online where you can mingle with the community, read their posts, ask questions, etc... You'll get the best information that way.

Search from Google, for example lets say you are searching for "video game testing", in the Google search box, type in:

video game testing+forums and hit the search button.

Or in the case of videography, type in: videography+forums and hit the search button

Read through the results and check some out. Take it from there.

I hope this helps Gloria.

Hi Jake B

At 13 i don't think you'll find video tester jobs just yet.

Read more about beta game testing, enjoy more games and in a few years you can try.

I'm 24 and have been searching everywhere for an online game testing or game reviewing position. Are there any specific sites to check?

Im sorry for the late response. You can start off by Googling "How to apply to become a game tester for Microsoft Beta games".

Hope this helps Anjulina

Hi guys

I REALLY want to be a game tester as I love video games so much.

I'm one of those people who 100% complete games without any guides so yeah. You can probably see why I want to be a game tester. However my game time is limited because of school and cadets (yep I go to a military school) please help!
