Were you aware that there are asthma scholarships and grants available to individuals with allergy's and asthma? It is true. With the state of the economy, it is great to have some financial assistance to help with tuition.

A lot of students are unaware of these asthma scholarship program because they don't usually search for this term. Furthermore, who would think that these weird educational opportunities exist. Well, they do and it is FREE!

There are many of these types of programs available, however, you must know where to go find them and you must qualify. These asthma scholarships are offered by colleges, private sponsors, non profit organizations and fellowships.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)
The local chapters of the AAFA provide their scholarship funds for students in their geographic regions. For example the New England Chapter sponsors a scholarship competition each year. The purpose of the competition is to recognize exceptional seniors who can be models for other young people living with severe allergies or asthma. They have two scholarships in the amount of $500 are available. High school students who are residents of participating chapters are eligible to apply. Schering-Plough Corporation "Will to Win" Asthma Scholarships

This program has been awarding scholarships for over 22 years to students with asthma who are pursuing a higher education. They award a total of $50,000 in grants in 5 categories which include performing arts, visual arts, community service, athletics and science. They have what is called the Asthma Athlete of the Year scholarship. The scholarship provides encouragement to strive for great achievements despite asthma. So if you are a high school senior that is disciplined, determined and successful in managing your asthma you should seriously considering applying for this grant. American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) Award of Excellence Scholarships

This program was created to provide asthma scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have been previously diagnosed with asthma. The choosen recipient receives an award of $1,000. Also several other candidates can receive merit awards of $100. These funds can be used only for college tuition, including books or fees and at a regionally accredited 2 or 4 year colleges and universities. The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) College Scholarship Essay Contest
This is a related program focusing on students with food allergies. Founded in 1991, this network is dedicated to raising public awareness of food allergies and educating individuals about this health condition. It offers a limited number of $1,500 scholarships to those who have food allergies. Students have to submit a written essay to qualify to be selected. The essay has to be on the subject of "How Food Allergy Has Made a Difference in My Life". This grant is not just for high school seniors but also current college students who will be continuing their studies. The American Academy of Otolaryngology Allergy Development (ROAD) Scholarship Program
This is another related program that provides scholarships to individuals with an interest in otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) and allergy. These individuals must submit a proposal laying out an original case study or research idea. These proposals will be reviewed based on a set of criteria that includes scientific merit and feasibility. The top ten participants with the highest grant scores will be awarded up to $5,000 to execute their research. The funds are paid directly to their affiliated institutions. The winners also get a chance to present their findings to their peers, mentors and other experts in the field at the AAOA annual meeting. Rexanna’s Foundation for Fighting Lung Cancer Scholarship
The program is for high school seniors who have personally been effected by cancer or had a form of cancer themselves. This foundation has given out more than 14 scholarships of $500 and continues to increase annually. To qualify, you must demonstrate involvement in community service, have a minimum grade point average of 2.75 and acceptance to an accredited college or university. Also, students must have a track record of involvement in school including performing arts, athletics, visual arts or science, service organizations, clubs, and etc. All scholarship funds are paid directly to the college or university of the award recipient.

The Diabetes Scholars Foundation Scholarship Program
This is another scholarship available to incoming freshmen wanting a higher education at an accredited 4 year university, college, technical or trade school. This program awards around 17 $5,000 scholarships to eligible students. This scholarship recognizes students who are actively involved in the diabetes community, who have high academic performance, who participate in community and/or extra curricular activities and who have demonstrated that they are successfully managing the challenges of living with diabetes.
