Interview with In The Doghouse
- Tell us a little about yourself. "Born and bred" in Southern California, I love the warmth and sunshine, and can't imagine living in any other part of the world. Married for 27 years to my best friend, I have two young adult "children", and two "adopted" young adult "children" who live with me on a regular basis. This June both of my children will graduate from school, my son, who is Lucky Dogon Hubpages, from BYU Hawaii and my daughter, who is constantly surprising us with her hair color, from Cosmetology School. I am an active member of my church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, The Mormons) and after teaching high school students instruction in religion every morning at 6:00 for the last 7 years, I have been rewarded with my current job teaching the Old Testament to single adults (ages 19-31) one night a week. Every Sunday, I am lucky enough to have about 30-40 of them call my place "home" and eat "family dinner" with us. Needless to say, there is never a dull moment at our house; we have truly become the "Hub" of the singles scene in our area. My husband and I are the owners of a small business that manufactures interior parts for commercial airlines thus my Hub on Airline humor. We love the water, and spend most of our summer wake boarding and water skiing.
- What brought you to HubPages? My good friend LDSNana, who also writes on Hubpages actually found the site first and invited me to start writing also. With her encouragement I started "Publishing my Passion", and became "hooked" rather quickly.
- What do you like Hubbing on, with respect to topics? I guess I enjoy Hubbing on things I love, my family, my religion, and the Bible, especially the Old Testament because that is what I am teaching my class on right now. I had fun with the different topic each day during the HubLove competition, as I felt it expanded my horizons quite a bit.
- What has been your best Hub so far (in your opinion)? Why? With each Hub I write, it feels as if my writing skills are improving (it has been a while since my college days! lol) My Hub that has been viewed the most is What Is So Different About a Mormon Funeral, but I think my personal best is Moses A Prophet of God. The most time consuming Hubs to write were my travel ones, How to Have The Best Lake Powell Vacation Ever, and Six Must See Travel Spots in the Western United States.
- What is your favorite Hub by another Hubber? Why? This is way too hard to answer because there are so many great Hubs out there. I think some of my favorite Hubbers would include, Rob Jundt and his "goofy sarcasm", Ripplemaker and her words of encouragement, PenmanZee and his different perspectives than mine, and a newbie, Mike J who's Hubs are intriguing and informative at the same time.
- What is one nice thing about HubPages (the site) that many might not know? I think that HubPages is a very friendly place. I have found that most all of the comments that are made in the forums and in the Hubs themselves are positive and insightful. Even though there are a multitude of varying opinions, each person is respectful and considerate; this is refreshing for me, especially coming from an internet site.
- Name one thing you learned about from another Hubber's Hub that you didn't know about before. Kenny Wordsmith taught me to enjoy art with his interpretive pieces on art. Peter Lopez taught me Hebrew and the meanings behind words. Sally's Trove and Uninvited Writer give me writing tips, just by reading their quality work.
- What kind of Hubber do you typically join the Fan Club of? Why? I am almost embarrassed by the stats that show I am one of the biggest readers on HubPages, but with that said, I always read several of the Hubbers Hubs before I join their Fan Club. Just because I am not a member of a Hubber's Fan Club however, does not mean I don't read their Hubs, I just make sure I join the ones I absolutely want to receive notification on when they publish.
- If you could impart one piece of advice to a new Hubber, what would that be? This is a difficult one for me, for I still consider myself a new Hubber! I guess what I have found to be helpful, is to simply read other Hubs. I have taken a lot of time to read different Hubs on a variety of subjects. Reading gives you an example of what kind of information is out there and how to improve on your own writing skills. I think to be a good writer you first must be a good reader.
- Tell us something that we'd never guess about you - surprise us! Knowing I worked as a manicurist for 12 years after the birth of my son, in a little salon attached to my home, could be a surprise I suppose. But, my hidden secret now revealed, is that I participated in training my hunting dog Nick, making him a qualified "Master Hunter." Although, mostly retired now, he was amazing to watch in the field.
