American Envy

President Obama’s most recent press conference of yesterday represents yet another missed opportunity for true leadership on his part. Of course there was none. Instead we get yet another lesson on how to incite class envy and divide the people of the United States in the hopes that it was buy him votes for his re-election. For those of you who have not noticed, the President is the champion of the underdog, or at the very least posing as one, who has no shame in going to any length necessary to send the message that he is on the job and working hard every day to redistribute wealth into the little man’s pocket. He won his high office on that promise, why change directions now.

The President was quick to set the tone of what the upcoming discussions between members of both parties will entail. One might take note that he did not waste any time speculating on government fat and waste but got right to the heart of the matter. He intends for these discussions to focus on finding more ways to tax the American public in order to continue to have the revenue streams in place to run this fat monster of a government we have created. In a matter of words, the President simply said, “Let’s go back to the well.”

Of course those on the left and possibly some others near the middle thought he surely was talking about taking away all those wonderful tax advantages which have been bestowed upon those deemed as wealthy by the evil folks on the right side of the political aisle. It’s time to take away the tax breaks from the big oil companies and time to give up the tax write offs for those luxury corporate jets. It was nothing short of Class Envy 101 at work, right out of the handbook of socialist instruction, Ladies and Gentlemen. Rip it all apart, create as much division as possible and then reshape it like it should be so that the misery is evenly divided among the participants.

Now, let me stop here and say that I happen to work for a large corporation that operates at least two corporate jets in the friendly skies over America and even more on a global basis. While those aircraft are well-equipped, they are also workhorses that operate on a steady schedule servicing various strategic points within the corporate infrastructure of North America. They were put into operation to facilitate the rapid movement of necessary personnel between critical points in the company’s production structure. These aircraft are scheduled and available to any employee who has a need to travel within that route structure. The aircraft are also used to move corporate clients to and from company events when the need arises. These aircraft provide jobs to a number of pilots and ground personnel within the company and they also provide a level of convenience and efficiency for company operations. The decision to purchase those aircraft was not made lightly nor was it made simply on the basis of providing elite people within the company a cushy ride.

Let me also say that one might stop by the Cessna operation in Wichita,Kansas and ask some of those folks who work on the line assembling some of these corporate jets if they feel the President’s attitude might be undermining their industry. Wow, talk about job creation by the government…we ain’t seen nothing yet folks. Never mind the President’s ride happens to be a Boeing 747 and two of them go everywhere he goes when he elects to go. Never mind that the President’s wife can decide to take a shopping trip to London and simply order the services of a Boeing 757 capable of hauling 200 commercial passengers to take her there. Never mind that she has to take enough folks along with her to shut down an entire business sector for security purposes when she shops. Never mind there is a Boeing 757 idling on the ramp waiting to return her home. Never mind that these aircraft are operating at 100% out of the taxpayers pockets…not just a tax write off of a few percent but 100%. Let’s not talk too bad about the evils of people who use corporate jets unless we know of who we speak.

Then there is big oil with all their tax breaks at a time when they are making oodles and gobs of money on the backs of the poor American consumer with their high gasoline prices. Of course Mr. Obama failed to put up the chart to show what his administration has done for high gasoline prices since taking office. If you have not noticed, they have changed, which is what he promised, right? No, it is time for those in the oil industry to give up any tax breaks which might benefit them so that the federal government can continue to spend the same amount of money on wasteful things.

One thing you can count on, the oil industry did not receive the tax incentives it is currently utilizing from only those on the right side of the aisle…the ones Mr. Obama would have you believe are the evil protectors sent to Washington to guard the wealth of the rich. No, the tax incentives going to the oil industry were put in place by members of both parties over time in the hope of stimulating the industry to invest in domestic oil drilling and lower our dependence on foreign oil. You see, at the time many of these incentives were put in place, the cost and risk involved in domestic drilling investment simply did not compute so big oil went to other countries where it did make sense to invest. Our current President and his band of cronies have no interest in domestic oil industry investment. Quite the contrary, their political play panders to the environmentalist tree-hugging sect in the hope of gaining yet another big block of votes in the next election campaign.

Large oil companies provide a tremendous number of jobs for the American worker all the way up from the drilling platform to the executive offices. Take big oil out of the city of Houston,Texas and see how much of the city disappears right before your eyes. Talk with those who work the financial end of the oil business where so, so much money is being made and you might be surprised to find out that in terms of simply financial formulas, the cost of exploration, and the risks factors combined with the environmental regulation of an out of control big government all roll up into a ball that says there are better places to put your money in terms of bottom line return. Tax incentives could be one of the factors that hold the interest level at its current position. Here again, we seem to have yet another effort on the part of the federal government to create more jobs in the private sector.

The President’s party was totally in control of the financial reins of this country from late 2006 until the mid-term elections of 2008. In that period of time, his party was not even able to muster a viable operating budget for the government; much less take any action to control spending. This is a basic requirement of their job as an elected official in our government and they ignored the responsibility. We have an administration in place currently which has grown the size of the federal government by a factor of almost 20% in just three short years, sorry…long years, yet there is no mention by the President that possibly there needs to be some significant considerations given to reducing government spending or slimming down the government in general. There is no mention of the political czars, commissions, and such which he has put in place by executive order in the dead of night without so much as consulting Congress…not that it would have done any good. No mention.

Today the President thinks it’s time to go after big oil and the corporate jet crowd to get the money he needs to feed his monster. What is the next step after you have stripped those industries? Obviously you go to the next layer and the next layer and the next just as long as there is the ability to borrow 42 cents of every dollar needed that is spent by the federal government then why not, why not go out and get another credit card and just keep running up the debt? We can continue on that path for some amount of time no doubt but eventually we reach the level that countries like Greece are at today with their citizens fighting in the streets because the government is finally forced to take away just about everything in order to keep from defaulting on its debts. That time comes when no one is willing to loan you money anymore and you simply print worthless money in the hope that it will work…it won’t. That’s where your President and his cronies are taking you with their plan for the future which does not include confronting big government and cutting the spending now.

It is easy to shrug one’s shoulders and go along. After all, the President is talking about going after the rich folks not us, not us good middle class people who he has sworn to protect. It would seem that way would it not except for the fact that big oil companies employ a lot of us little middle class people and a lot of us little middle class people work on the assembly lines at corporate jet plants. A lot of us little middle class people are pilots who fly those jets and engineers who search for oil. Gee, it’s a good thing the President is focused on going after those rich folks.

The President failed to mention that maybe the over-inflated budget of the EPA might need to be looked at more closely. Maybe some of that watch-dog tree-hugging taxpayer money could be better spent securing our borders to the south in this country. The President failed to mention the outrageous amounts of taxpayer money already spent on stimulus programs that have left the economy sagging and yielded an unemployment rate of over 9%. He did mention that he desires to spend even more money on infrastructure…what happened to the 50 billion he already set aside for that task? Who knows?

When we see a leadership like the current one, it should scare us to death in America. There is an arrogance displayed here that is beyond belief. Why when we run out of money, we will simply go get some more! What a novel idea. When you go out and work and earn a dollar, that dollar is yours because you did the work to earn it. The government steps up and says, we want 15 cents out of your dollar as income tax to support the operation of your government. Oh, and we want another 7 cents to support the bankrupt Social Security system which you will likely never benefit from if you are younger than 55. Oh, and we also need another 3 cents for the bankrupt Medicare plan which no doubt will have a similar outcome. Oh, and by the way, in a couple of years, we are going to need you to spend another 15 cents out of that dollar to purchase your government policy for healthcare under the Obama Plan. Now if you fail to do that, we’ll fine you an addition 20 cents out of each dollar you earn. Oh, and you also need to kick in some for the folks who cannot afford the plan because they don’t earn any money because they don’t work. You see how easy it is to keep going back to the well?

Each trip back to the well takes things down to a lower level. Today it is the corporate jets and big oil tax breaks. Eventually it could hinge on a discussion that says everyone who has two cars in their drive way needs to pay more taxes to the federal government. Keep in mind, we are still “taxing the rich”, it’s just the rich have a whole lot less than they use to have when we first started taxing them. If we are lucky, you and I might earn that distinction under this administration.

The President also alluded that his discussions would also consider the “expenditures in the current tax code”. Now most Americans probably missed that bomb when it was dropped because it was encased in some two dollar “Magna Cum Laude Harvard Law School Graduate” words. What the President means to say is lets look at the tax code and see who we are giving breaks to in the revenue stream or what is it we are either offering write-offs on or not taxing. Oh look! Most of the middle-class Americans who own a home are writing off their mortgage interest on their annual income taxes. We can’t have that…the government needs that money! Wait, don’t get mad, we are just doing our job and taxing those rich folks with the fancy tax loopholes, aren’t we?

What it comes down to folks is “how much are you willing to give up before it becomes too much”? How much does your government have to take away from you in terms of what you earn before you say “enough”? How long are you willing to tolerate a government which cannot seem to find any ways to curb its spending habits and simply comes back to the well over and over for more and more revenue that eventually comes out of your pocket? Oh yes, they will sing that song that they are going after the wealthy ones…they will say that for sure. But you just wait and see. If you don’t already believe in trickle down economics then you just wait and see how long it takes the government’s raid on the wealthy to get to your little middle-class bungalow. The upside is that you will have then achieved the status you have worked so hard to get…you’ll be rich…at least in the eyes of the government.

Nothing good ever came from a leadership willing to use divisiveness and class envy to accomplish their agenda of government waste and power grabbing. Nothing good ever came out of an America that was divided and fomented on the hatred of each other to the point that rational conversations could not take place. We live in that world today unfortunately and we have an administration and a majority in our Congress more than willing to continue those policies which will divide America and tear it apart not only economically but philosophically. We are severely lacking a moral conscience, an ethical compass, and a political leadership which places the welfare of this country ahead of the desires of a political party or a group of left wing socialist willing to sell out all that is America to implement the poisonous philosophy to which they subscribe.

If you live and vote in America today, then you had better open your ears and listen to what is being said and what is not being said. Otherwise, someone may soon be at your door looking for the rich people who live inside.

Wayne - beautifully stated my friend. The main point I got from this hub is this administration will not be happy until everyone is equally broke and miserable. Then they will sit back, have a party, and say "Job well done." Of course they exclude themselves from the broke and miserable class of citizen because they are far superior to We The People.

@Old Poolman...Great comments, Thanks. When your business buys a new pickup for work, the accountant sets up a depreciation on that capital investment under our tax laws...the same thing happens with a corporate jet. When they take away the depreciation on the corporate jet, they will come for the depreciation on the pickup that your business needs...eventually it comes down to cash flow as it always does in business. Obama simply grabbed on to the side of the boat that made the best argument for class envy. WB

Wayne - I have made it very clear to my employees that when they are the only one's getting a paycheck from my business, I will close the doors. As it is now, every added cost to operating the business comes out of my paycheck, they still make the same amount of money. Almost every day, something goes up in price being it taxes, insurance, gasoline, supplies, etc., and I pay these increases. I work more hours per day than any of my employees, and I take all of the risks. Yet many feel the employer is not entitled to any profit, his paycheck, at all. Keep increasing costs and many business's will close their doors putting yet more people in the long unemployment lines.

Wayne,

Great Hub. This pretender and his cabinet which has the distinction of being the lowest percentage to ever work in the private sector at 8%, have no clue about an economy based on the private sector. No experience = No clue!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Old Poolman...Amen Mike...what needs to happen in our economy is no secret...the government needs to get out of the way and let the private sector work. WB

I have finally had to admit that those who have claimed from the beginning that this president is hell-bent on destroying America as we know it may have been right all along.

We have high energy prices, high unemployment, huge spending, massive new debts, and a failing dollar, and he has done exactly the wrong things in each case.

Deliberate?

Either he is the most inept president ever, or it is deliberate. Those are the only two options.

Wayne Brown profile image

@WillStarr...I'd say that's a pretty solid assessment, Will. Either deliberate or Magna Cum Laude is a whole lot more stupid than it use to be. WB

WB - right on the money. I shudder to think that this administration will get any worse. Maybe Obama should have been a magician - he's great at saying look over there! Then poof - out comes the silk coth to hide what he's doing behind it, yanno?

Btw - cute video - that girl draws better than me;)!

Regarding Will Starr's comment.A third option is commitment to left wing theories, such as Kensyian economics. If his actions don't work, the answer in their mind is more of the same. And a living constitution instead of the documents as written and amended.

I would rather we had someone entirely dishonest rather than a fanatic.

Wayne, you did a typo which was hilarious. You typed "sliming" down the government, instead of slimming. "Sliming has been done, it is slimy as heck.

Government paychecks have gone up and up. SS and disability (both military and SSDI) have not had an increase in 2 years now because the "cost of living" has not gone up. They do not count food and gas. The 2 things that have gone up and up. Seniors have eaten dog food in the past because they did not get enough to pay for food as well as a place to live. I don't know what they will eat now.

Perhaps if our government employees (shudder), congress and the house, could take a 15% pay cut, we could save them. Of course, with their self-centered attitudes, we know that won't happen. They also are free of having to use Obamacare and should have to use it. Maybe then they would see it isn't worth a damn.

I have long thought that Obama was trying to turn this into a "socialist, Muslim" country. He has stated that this is a Muslim country now. I do not see where he is finding that, since all polls I have seen say 85% of the country claim to be Christians. I definitely do not want to turn socialist.

@RealHousewife...Yes, as The Frog Prince once observed, always look to what he does not say to find the truth. If there is a second term we had better pray that Congress is in the hands of the right...that will be the only way to keep him in check and still he will use the power of executive order to no good. This man is bad for America. WB

@Hypenbird...Thanks much...the dude made me raging mad yesterday with his smirky little speech. What an immature trainwreck we have in this high office when we so badly need a leader. WB

@dahoglund...Right on the money, DA. Everything I can find about this guy reeks with his interest in socialism from his friends to his work to his favorite books. For a legal graduate, I don't see a passion for the Rule of Law or a love of the Constitution which generally comes with that education...something is amiss. WB

@Becky....LOL! I will get in there and fix that although it seems almost appropriate, huh. I have no doubt that Obama is a socialist in every sense of the word...look at his friends, his interest, his favorite books. He believe big government is the answer to all problems. He is the closest thing you will find to the right hand man of George Soros, who, also a devoted socialist, would like nothing better than to see America fall to pieces. WB

It was called the luxury tax and destroyed the yacht and big boat business, costing over 25000 jobs!...........seems liberals have a learning disorder and can never remember history! Just as a side note I thought today that if they would deregualte the sulphur in deisel then over night groceries and consumer goods would drop by 20 to 30 percent! Is there any proof that the new regulations have helped the environment? Drop deisel back to 100 a gallon and this country will get a huge boost all the way around........not to mention those building deisel trucks!..........hundreds of ways to help the economy and our own Republicans can't get it done, nor mention it!

It's really an acoustic war between the executive and legislative branch. But they both serve the same masters. The elite that make up 5% of the population. At the end of the day you will find them in bed together from either side of the political fence. It's not a conflict between the have and have- not but who gets a bigger share of the pie between the haves.

It"s the power brokers behind the scene

Obanana is just a puppet on a string :)

All that brouhaha is just for show

Corporate America still rules the day

Wayne Brown profile image

@The Frog Princess...Thank you, he stirred my paint again last week...had to speak up.

@SilentReed...I do not doubt the power brokers but my fear is that the major one is the socialist, George Soros, a big contributor to the Obama effort. No doubt much of Obama's financial woes here were brought upon him by his own Congress between 2006 and 2008. Obama's approach to all of this budget stuff is the same as his approach to border security...give us what we want then we will try to fix it. The government has grown significanty (close to 20%) under Obama's watch as he has appointed czars and their staff right and left with little regard for the additional costs. While Social Security and Medicare are considered "solvent" at the present, that will not last yet Obama and Co could only demonize any plan submitted which attempted to address those issues. If we get into the terminology of what presently solvent means...it is an indication that the programs currently taken in enough money to cover their costs. Unfortunately, since that money is thrown into the general fund, portions of it get spent on other aspects yet the percentage of the money needed for both programs is the first defense held up as there being no way to cut without touching entitlements. Let's do some cutting first and find out. There is the exact point where the leadership is sorely lacking. WB

It would seem elementary, my dear Wayne, that if the money's not there, you don't buy. Everyone, including the wealthy, know their limitations and operate from a budget. Its not news today that the past ease of acquiring multiple credit cards has landed many in bankrupcy court. Why would anyone look at further credit as an answer for the gov't. Its the quickest way to digging a hole impossible to extricate. Its amazing how much less I can get by on when a credit card is not part of the picture and reality lies in what I have in my wallet. Discipline builds character. Great article that should be required reading for everyone.

Wayne Brown profile image

@RealHousewife...Jimmy Carter managed to get into office on the same fallacy. It took years to live down the damage of those times filled with double digit interest rates and double digit inflation numbers. Obama is a trainwreck as is the Congress that preceded him by one year. There is no leadership here but more an effort to divide and conquer. We will lose our freedoms to a big government bent on controlling everything. This damage will also require much hardship to repair if it indeed can be repaired. Obviously this man does not indeed for his children to live in this quagmire he is creating. WB

@Amy Becherer...How right you are. I tell my son all the time that the best way he can achieve power is to reduce his credit exposure as much as possible and as quickly as possible. We are then the ones who are in control of our destiny...not some credit company. The same holds true for our government. No one is advocating cruelty, we are talking about using basic economics when you can no longer afford all your desires. At present, the government is using Social Security and Medicare to prop up other spending areas...that needs to stop and those programs need to be isolated away from the sticky fingers of government idiots. Thanks Amy. WB

Wayne, a real gem. Sadly, too many people just don't get it. They are either fooled into believing the Obama nonsense is valid, or they just don't care one way or the other. As a nation, we may not realize what is happening until no amount of fiscal austerity can pay off the debt, and our only choice will be to monetize our way into the next great depression. I've had this discussion with countless centrists and liberals, and they all think I'm just a fearmongerer. I'm not a mongerer, but I am very afraid.

Stu

Wayne Brown profile image

@Stu From VT....You are correct, Stu. Many do not get it because they see no reality in trickle down economics. Our system thrives on it and government controls and regulations only act to surpress the effort in the private sector. We need to quit badmouthing success and seek some of it for ourselves. I do not see you as a fearmongerer...I see you as a simple realist who is very aware of what is happening to this country. Thank you for speaking out. WB

So America is now where SA was in 1994 – The beginning of the era of the underdog. The scenario is (excluding the odd ones out): The poor become middleclass and the middleclass become poor, the very poor stays very poor and the rich stays rich. All members of Government and their allies proceed from poor/middleclass to stinking rich, of course. After almost 20 years this is still going on. Although they say we are growing, they don’t mention that for X to grow upward Xx2 have to grow downwards. Wayne, I find America’s current political issues very interesting, because it is so similar to ours.

Two terms of this will surely finish us off and Congress seems to be no help. These are scary and intersting times for us. WB
